Abstract

A surgical end effector for cutting and stapling tissue is disclosed. The surgical end effector comprises a first iaw and second iaw configured to clamp tissue when the first and second jaws are in a clamped position. The end effector further comprises a replaceable staple cartridge and a tissue thickness compensator configured to adapt to variations in the thickness of the clamped tissue. The tissue thickness compensator comprises three fibrous patterns oriented in three different directions and a tissue contacting surface comprising a textured surface. The textures surface is configured to minimize movement of the tissue relative to the tissue thickness compensator. The end effector further comprises an I-beam comprising a first camming member, a second camming member, and a cutting member. The end effector further comprises a first attachment member and a second attachment member configured to be progressively released by said cutting member.

Claims (32)

1. A surgical end effector for cutting and stapling tissue, wherein said surgical end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position, and wherein the tissue is clamped between said first jaw and said second jaw when said second jaw is in said clamped position;

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein;

a tissue thickness compensator placed on said second jaw, wherein said tissue thickness compensator is configured to adapt to variations in the thickness of the clamped tissue, and wherein said tissue thickness compensator comprises:

three fibrous patterns, wherein said three fibrous patterns are oriented in three different directions; and

a tissue contacting surface, wherein said tissue contacting surface comprises a textured surface configured to minimize movement of the tissue relative to said tissue thickness compensator when said second jaw is moved toward said clamped position;

an I-beam configured to travel within said surgical end effector, wherein said I-beam comprises:

a first camming member configured to engage said first jaw;

a second camming member configured to engage said second jaw; and

a cutting member configured to incise the clamped tissue;

a first attachment member; and

a second attachment member spaced apart from said first attachment member, wherein said first and second attachment members are configured to attach said tissue thickness compensator to said second jaw, and wherein said first and second attachment members are progressively released by said cutting member as said I-beam travels distally within said surgical end effector.

2. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said tissue contacting surfaces further comprises a flat surface.

3. The surgical end effector of claim 1 , wherein said tissue contacting surfaces further comprises a stepped surface.

4. A surgical end effector for cutting and fastening tissue, wherein said surgical end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said second jaw is movable relative to said first jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position, and wherein the tissue is clamped between said first jaw and said second jaw when said second jaw is in said clamped position;

a removable fastener cartridge comprising a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein;

a tissue thickness compensator placed on said first jaw, wherein said tissue thickness compensator is configured to create variable compression of the clamped tissue, and wherein said tissue thickness compensator comprises:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

three co-extensive patterns, wherein each said co-extensive pattern extends between said proximal end and said distal end, and wherein said three co-extensive patterns are oriented in three different directions; and

a tissue contacting surface, wherein said tissue contacting surface comprises a textured surface configured to minimize movement of said tissue thickness compensator relative to the tissue when said second jaw is moved toward said clamped position;

a firing member configured to travel within said surgical end effector, wherein said firing member comprises:

a first camming member configured to engage said first jaw; and

a second camming member configured to engage said second jaw;

a knife blade configured to travel distally within said surgical end effector;

a first attachment member; and

a second attachment member spaced apart from said first attachment member, wherein said first and second attachment members are configured to attach said tissue thickness compensator to said first jaw, and wherein said first and second attachment members are progressively released by said knife blade as said knife blade travels distally within said surgical end effector.

5. The surgical end effector of claim 4 , wherein said tissue contacting surfaces further comprises a flat surface.

6. The surgical end effector of claim 4 , wherein said tissue contacting surfaces further comprises a stepped surface.
