Abstract

Methods and devices that displace bone or other hard tissue to create a cavity in the tissue. Where such methods and devices rely on a driving mechanism for providing moving of the device to form a profile that improves displacement of the tissue. These methods and devices also allow for creating a path or cavity in bone for insertion of bone cement or other filler to treat a fracture or other condition in the bone. The features relating to the methods and devices described herein can be applied in any region of bone or hard tissue where the tissue or bone is displaced to define a bore or cavity instead of being extracted from the body such as during a drilling or ablation procedure.

Claims (29)

1. A method of treating a vertebral body, comprising:

advancing a shaft into a vertebral body, the shaft comprising a bendable segment, a first electrode, and a second electrode;

heating a portion of the vertebral body adjacent the bendable segment by activating current flow between the first electrode and the second electrode; and

displacing a portion of the vertebral body adjacent a distal end of the shaft by applying an impact force to a handle coupled to a proximal end of the shaft.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising increasing a distance between a portion of the first electrode and a portion of the second electrode.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising increasing an effective surface area of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein increasing the effective surface of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode comprises displacing a portion of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein displacing a portion of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode comprises extending a helical electrode such that the distance between adjacent coils of the helical electrode increases.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein heating a portion of the vertebral body comprises delivering RF energy to the heated portion of the vertebral body.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein heating a portion of the vertebral body comprises introducing RF current along a path extending from the first electrode around the bendable segment to the second electrode.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising manipulating an actuation portion of a handle to deform the bendable segment into an articulated configuration.

9. A method of treating a vertebral body, comprising:

advancing a shaft into a vertebral body, the shaft comprising an insulator, a first electrode, and a second electrode, wherein the insulator is radially disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode; and

heating a portion of the vertebral body by introducing RF current along a path extending from the first electrode around the insulator to the second electrode.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising increasing a distance between a portion of the first electrode and a portion of the second electrode.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising increasing an effective surface area of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein increasing the effective surface of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode comprises displacing a portion of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein displacing a portion of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode comprises extending a helical electrode such that the distance between adjacent coils of the helical electrode increases.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising manipulating an actuation portion of a handle to deform a bendable segment into an articulated configuration.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising displacing a portion of the vertebral body adjacent a distal end of the shaft by applying an impact force to a handle coupled to a proximal end of the shaft.

16. A method of treating a vertebral body, comprising:

advancing a shaft into a vertebral body, the shaft comprising a first electrode, a second electrode, and a handle;

displacing a portion of the first electrode to increase the effective surface area of the first electrode, wherein the portion of the first electrode is displaced by rotation of a portion of the handle; and

heating a portion of the vertebral body by activating current flow between the first electrode and the second electrode.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein displacing a portion of the first electrode comprises extending a helical portion of the first electrode such that the distance between adjacent coils of the helical portion increases.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein heating a portion of the vertebral body comprises delivering RF energy to the heated portion of the vertebral body.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein heating a portion of the vertebral body comprises introducing RF current along a path extending from the first electrode around a portion of the shaft to the second electrode.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising manipulating an actuation portion of a handle to deform a bendable segment into an articulated configuration.

21. The method of claim 16 , further comprising displacing a portion of the vertebral body adjacent a distal end of the shaft by applying an impact force to a handle coupled to a proximal end of the shaft.
