Abstract

A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler is disclosed. The stapling assembly comprises a first jaw, a second jaw, an elongate channel configured to receive a staple cartridge, a firing member, and a lockout. The staple cartridge comprises a sled configured to eject staples. The firing member is configured to move distally in response to a rotary motion. The firing member is configured to advance the sled during a firing stroke. The lockout is configured to selectively prevent said firing member from performing said firing stroke.

a firing member configured to move distally in response to a rotary motion of said rotary motions, wherein the firing member is configured to advance the sled through the staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises:

a cutting edge;

a first camming member configured to engage said first jaw during said firing stroke; and

a second camming member configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a lockout configured to selectively prevent said firing member from performing said firing stroke, wherein said firing member is retained in a locked state after said firing member is initially distally advanced by said motor when said sled is not positioned at a proximal end of the staple cartridge when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, wherein said firing member is configured to pivot about a longitudinal axis and out of lateral alignment with the elongate slot of the staple cartridge and into engagement with said lockout when the staple cartridge is positioned in the elongate channel and the sled is not positioned at the proximal end of the staple cartridge, wherein said firing member is in an unlocked state after said firing member is initially distally advanced by said motor when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, the sled is positioned at the proximal end of the staple cartridge, and the notch of the sled receives a portion of said firing member to laterally align said firing member with the elongate slot of the staple cartridge to prevent said firing member from engaging said lockout and permit said firing member to advance distally past said lockout.

2. A stapling assembly configured for use with a surgical stapler, wherein the surgical stapler comprises a motor configured to generate rotary motions, and wherein the stapling assembly comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a staple cartridge;

an elongate channel configured to receive the staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises:

an elongate slot extending in a longitudinal direction;

a proximal end;

a distal end opposite the proximal end;

a plurality of staples; and

a sled movable between the proximal end and the distal end of the staple cartridge to eject the staples from the staple cartridge, wherein the sled comprises a notch;

a firing member configured to advance distally in response to said rotary motions, wherein the firing member is configured to advance the sled through the staple cartridge during a firing stroke, and wherein said firing member comprises:

a cutting edge;

a first camming member configured to engage said first jaw during said firing stroke; and

a second camming member configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a lockout configured to selectively engage said firing member to prevent said firing member from performing said firing stroke, wherein said lockout prevents said firing member from performing said firing stroke after said firing member is initially actuated by said motor when the sled is not positioned at the proximal end of the staple cartridge when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, wherein the firing member is configured to rotate about a longitudinal axis and out of lateral alignment with the elongate slot of the staple cartridge and into engagement with said lockout when the sled is not positioned at the proximal end of the staple cartridge when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, and wherein said lockout permits said firing member to perform said firing stroke after said firing member is initially actuated by said motor when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, the sled is positioned at the proximal end of the staple cartridge, and the notch of the sled receives a portion of said firing member to laterally align said firing member with the elongate slot of the staple cartridge to permit said firing member to distally advance past said lockout.

3. A stapling assembly for use with a surgical stapler comprising a motor configured to generate rotary motions, wherein said stapling assembly comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw between an open position and a closed position;

a staple cartridge;

an elongate channel configured to receive the staple cartridge, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

an elongate slot extending in a longitudinal direction;

a plurality of staples; and

a sled configured to eject the staples from the staple cartridge, wherein the sled comprises a notch;

a firing member configured to move distally in response to a rotary motion of said rotary motions, wherein said firing member is configured to advance the sled through the staple cartridge during a firing stroke, wherein said firing member comprises:

a cutting edge;

a first camming member configured to engage said first jaw during said firing stroke; and

a second camming member configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a lockout configured to:

prevent said firing member from performing said firing stroke after said firing member is initially distally advanced by said motor when said sled is not positioned at a proximal end of the staple cartridge when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, wherein the firing member is configured to pivot about a longitudinal axis and out of lateral alignment with the elongate slot of the staple cartridge and into engagement with said lockout when said sled is not positioned at said proximal end of the staple cartridge when the staple cartridge is positioned in the elongate channel; and

permit said firing member to perform said firing stroke after said firing member is initially distally advanced by said motor when the staple cartridge is positioned in said elongate channel, the sled is positioned at the proximal end of the staple cartridge, and the notch of the sled receives a portion of said firing member to laterally align said firing member with said elongate slot of the staple cartridge to prevent said firing member from engaging said lockout.

4. A stapling assembly for use with a powered surgical stapler, wherein the powered surgical stapler comprises a motor configured to generate rotary motions, and wherein said stapling assembly comprises:
