Abstract

A surgical stapling system comprising a motorized system configured to generate a low torque rotary motion during a first operating mode and a high torque rotary motion during a second operating mode, a control system configured to switch between the first and second operating modes, an end effector, a drive member, and a rotatable member operably coupled with the motorized system and in operable engagement with the drive member is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw between an open position and a clamped position. The high torque rotary motion from the motorized system moves the drive member to drive the second iaw toward the clamped position. An opposite rotary motion from the motorized system moves the drive member in an opposite direction to release the second jaw and allow the second jaw to move toward the open position.

Claims (49)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a shaft;

a motorized system configured to generate a low torque rotary motion during a first operating mode and a high torque rotary motion during a second operating mode;

a control system configured to switch between said first operating mode and said second operating mode, wherein said control system comprises a user interface configured to allow a user to selectively switch between said first operating mode and said second operating mode;

an end effector, comprising;

a first jaw, and

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a clamped position;

an articulation joint disposed proximal to said end effector, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said shaft about said articulation joint;

a drive member; and

a rotatable member operably coupled with said motorized system, wherein said rotatable member is in operable engagement with said drive member, wherein said high torque rotary motion from said motorized system moves said drive member to drive said second jaw toward said clamped position, and wherein an opposite direction to release said second jaw and allow said second jaw to move toward said open position.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said second jaw is pulled toward said open position.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said rotatable member is in the threaded engagement with said drive member.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises a staple cartridge.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said user interface is configured to selectively switch between said first operating mode and said second operating mode when said motorized system is not generating said low torque rotary motion or said high torque rotary motion.

7. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said control system further comprises an actuator configured to actuate said motorized system.

8. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a shaft;

a motorized system configured to produce a low torque rotary motion during a first operating state and a high torque rotary motion during a second operating state;

a control system configured to move between said first operating state and said second operating state, wherein said control system comprises a user interface configured to allow a user to selectively move between said first operating state and said second operating state;

an end effector, comprising:

a jaw;

a pivot; and

an anvil rotatable relative to said jaw about said pivot between an open position and a closed position, wherein said anvil comprises a camming surface;

an articulation joint disposed proximal to said pivot, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said shaft about said articulation joint;

a camming member; and

a rotatable member operably coupled with said motorized system,. wherein said rotatable member is in operable engagement with said camming, wherein said high torque rotary motion from said motorized system moves said camming member relative to said camming surface, wherein said camming member is configured to drive said anvil toward said closed position, and wherein an opposite rotary motion from said motorized system moves said camming member in an opposite direction to release said anvil and allow said anvil to move toward said open position.

9. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said anvil is pulled toward said open position.

10. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said rotatable member is in threaded engagement with said camming member.

11. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said jaw comprises a staple cartridge.

12. The surgical stapling system of claim 11 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.

13. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said user interface is configured to selectively move between said first operating state and said second operating state when said motorized system is not generating said low torque rotary motion or said high torque rotary motion.

14. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said control system further comprises an actuator configured to actuate said motorized system.

15. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a shaft assembly;

a motorized system configured to produce a low torque rotary motion in a first configuration and a high torque rotary motion in a second configuration;

a control system configured to change between said first configuration and said second configuration, wherein said control system comprises a user interface configured to allow a user to selectively change between said first configuration and said second configuration;

an end effector, comprising:

a frame comprising a staple cartridge;

a pivot; and

an anvil positionable relative to said frame between an open position and a clamped position;

an articulation joint disposed proximal to said pivot, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said shaft assembly about said articulation joint;

a drive member; and

a rotatable member operably coupled with said motorized system, wherein said rotatable member is in operable engagement with said drive member, wherein said high torque rotary motion from said motorized system moves said drive member, wherein said drive member controls the position of said anvil, and wherein an opposite rotary motion from said motorized system moves said drive member in an opposite direction to allow said anvil to move toward said open position.

16. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein said anvil is pulled toward said open position.

17. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein said rotatable member is in threaded engagement with said drive member.

18. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.

19. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein said user interface is configured to selectively change between said first configuration and said second configuration when said motorized system is not generating said low torque rotary motion or said high torque rotary motion.
