Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion having a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, and a bottom portion. The golf club head may include a first weight port region on the bottom portion and a second weight port region on the bottom portion. The first weight port region may include a first set of weight portions. The second weight port region may include a second set of weight portions. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (47)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, and a bottom portion;

a first weight port region on the bottom portion, at least a portion of the first weight port region located within 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from a rear periphery of the body portion, the first weight port region comprising a first set of weight portions coupled to a first set of weight ports;

a second weight port region on the bottom portion, at least a portion of the second weight port region located within 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from a front periphery of the body portion, the second weight port region comprising a second set of weight portions coupled to a second set of weight ports;

a toe-side vertical plane intersecting one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersecting one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the toe-side vertical plane being perpendicular to a front vertical plane;

a heel-side vertical plane intersecting one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersecting one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the heel-side vertical plane being perpendicular to the front vertical plane; and

an insert located within the body portion and contoured to match an inner surface of the body portion, the insert configured to dampen vibration and noise at or around each weight port of the first and second sets of weight ports,

wherein the insert includes a plurality of cutout portions, and

wherein each weight port of the first and second sets of weight ports is received in a corresponding cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions and contacts the corresponding cutout portion to maintain the position of the insert on the inner surface of the body portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein a center vertical plane intersects one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersects one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the center vertical plane located between the toe-side vertical plane and the heel-side vertical plane and perpendicular to the front vertical plane.

3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first weight port region is wholly located less than or equal to 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from the rear periphery of the bottom portion.

4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second weight port region is wholly located less than or equal to 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from the front periphery of the bottom portion.

5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first weight port region has a first area less than or equal to 0.75 square inches (4.84 square centimeters), and the second weight port region has a second area less than or equal to 0.75 square inches (4.84 square centimeters).

A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a third weight port region on the bottom portion, the third weight port region located between the toe-side vertical plane and a toe-side periphery of the bottom portion, wherein the third weight port region comprises a third set of weight portions coupled to a third plurality of weight ports, and wherein each weight port of the third set of weight ports is received in a corresponding cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions and contacts the corresponding cutout portion to maintain the position of the insert on the inner surface of the body portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a third weight port region on the bottom portion, the third weight port region located between the heel-side vertical plane and a heel-side periphery of the bottom portion, the third weight port region comprising a third set of weight portions.

8. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, and a bottom portion;

a first weight port region on the bottom portion, at least a portion of the first weight port region located within 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from a rear periphery of the body portion, the first weight port region comprising a first set of weight portions coupled to a first set of weight ports;

a second weight port region on the bottom portion, at least a portion of the second weight port region located within 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from a front periphery of the body portion, the second weight port region comprising a second set of weight portions coupled to a second set of weight ports;

a center vertical plane intersecting one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersecting one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the center vertical plane being perpendicular to a front vertical plane;

a toe-side vertical plane intersecting one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersecting one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the toe-side vertical plane being perpendicular to the front vertical plane; and

an insert located within the body portion and contoured to match an inner surface of the body portion,

wherein the insert includes a plurality of cutout portions,

wherein the first set of weight ports, the second set of weight ports, and the plurality of cutout portions have substantially the same height, and

wherein each weight port of the first and second sets of weight ports is received in a corresponding cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions and contacts the corresponding cutout portion to maintain the position of the insert on the inner surface of the body portion.

9. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein at least a portion of the first weight port region located within 1.0 inch (2.54 centimeters) from the rear periphery of the body portion.

10. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first weight port region is wholly located less than or equal to 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from the rear periphery of the bottom portion.

11. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the second weight port region is wholly located less than or equal to 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from the front periphery of the bottom portion.

12. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first weight port region has a first area of less than 0.75 square inches (4.84 square centimeters), and the second weight port region has a second area of less than 0.75 square inches (4.84 square centimeters).

13. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a third weight port region on the bottom portion, the third weight port region located between the toe-side vertical plane and a toe-side periphery of the bottom portion, wherein the third weight port region comprises a third set of weight portions coupled to a third set of weight ports, wherein the third set of weight ports and the insert have the same height, and wherein each weight port of the third set of weight ports is received in a corresponding cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions and contacts the corresponding cutout portion to maintain the position of the insert on the inner surface of the body portion.

A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a third weight port region on the bottom portion, the third weight port region located between the center vertical plane and a heel-side periphery of the bottom portion, the third weight port region comprising a third set of weight portions.

15. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, and a bottom portion;

a first weight port region on the bottom portion, at least a portion of the first weight port region located within 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from a rear periphery of the body portion, the first weight port region comprising a first set of weight portions coupled to a first set of weight ports;

a second weight port region on the bottom portion, at least a portion of the second weight port region located within 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from a front periphery of the body portion, the second weight port region comprising a second set of weight portions coupled to a second set of weight ports;

wherein a center vertical plane intersects one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersects one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the center vertical plane being perpendicular to a front vertical plane;

wherein a heel-side vertical plane intersects one weight portion of the first set of weight portions and intersects one weight portion of the second set of weight portions, the heel-side vertical plane being perpendicular to the front vertical plane; and

an insert located within the body portion and contoured to match an inner surface of the body portion,

wherein the insert includes a plurality of cutout portions and a plurality of holes extending through the insert,

wherein each hole of the plurality of holes is smaller than each cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions,

wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in a honeycomb pattern, and

wherein each weight port of the first and second sets of weight ports is received in a corresponding cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions and contacts the corresponding cutout portion to maintain the position of the insert on the inner surface of the body portion and dampen vibration and noise at or around each weight port of the first and second sets of weight ports.

16. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein at least a portion of the first weight port region located within 1.0 inch (2.54 centimeters) from the rear periphery of the body portion.

17. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the first weight port region is wholly located less than or equal to 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from the rear periphery of the bottom portion, and the second weight port region is wholly located less than or equal to 1.25 inches (3.175 centimeters) from the front periphery of the bottom portion.

18. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the first weight port region has a first area of less than 0.75 square inches (4.84 square centimeters), and the second weight port region has a second area of less than 0.75 square inches (4.84 square centimeters).

19. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 further comprising a third weight port region on the bottom portion, the third weight port region located between the center vertical plane and a toe-side periphery of the bottom portion, the third weight port region comprising a third set of weight portions.

A golf club head as defined in claim 15 further comprising a third weight port region on the bottom portion, the third weight port region located between the heel-side vertical plane and a heel-side periphery of the bottom portion, wherein the third weight port region comprises a third set of weight portions coupled to a third set of weight ports, wherein each weight port of the third set of weight ports is received in a corresponding cutout portion of the plurality of cutout portions and contacts the corresponding cutout portion to maintain the position of the insert on the inner surface of the body portion and dampen vibration and noise at or around each weight port of the third set of weight ports.
