Abstract

A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, may include an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle, an outer rim surrounding the hub, and gas springs operatively coupled between the inner rim and the outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between the inner rim and the outer rim. The wheel assembly may also include a sidewall cover assembly that includes an inner sidewall cover coupled to the inner rim and extending radially outward toward the outer rim. The sidewall cover assembly may also include an outer sidewall cover coupled to the outer rim and extending radially inward toward the inner rim and in sliding overlapping relation with the inner sidewall cover permitting relative movement between the inner sidewall cover and the outer sidewall cover.

Claims (44)

1. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the inner rim;

a plurality of gas springs operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim; and

a sidewall cover assembly comprising

an inner sidewall cover coupled to said inner rim and extending radially outward toward said outer rim, and

an outer sidewall cover coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward toward said inner rim and in sliding overlapping relation with said inner sidewall cover permitting relative movement between said inner sidewall cover and said outer sidewall cover,

said inner sidewall cover comprising an inner sidewall panel and an inner wiper arrangement extending from said inner sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with said outer sidewall cover, and said outer sidewall cover comprising an outer sidewall panel and an outer wiper arrangement extending from said outer sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with said inner sidewall cover.

2. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein said inner sidewall cover comprises an inner sidewall panel and an inner wiper arrangement extending from said inner sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with said outer sidewall cover.

3. The wheel assembly of claim 2 wherein said inner wiper arrangement comprises a resilient wiper blade.

4. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein said outer sidewall cover comprises an outer sidewall panel and an outer wiper arrangement extending from said outer sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with said inner sidewall cover.

5. The wheel assembly of claim 4 wherein said outer wiper arrangement comprises a resilient wiper blade.

The wheel assembly of claim 1 comprising an outer ring coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward therefrom; and an inner ring coupled to said inner rim, extending radially outward from said inner rim and defining a closeable gap with adjacent portions of said outer ring to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement of said inner rim and outer rim.

7. The wheel assembly of claim 6 wherein said plurality of gas springs have an operating stroke permitting said outer ring and inner ring to define a mechanical stop.

8. The wheel assembly of claim 6 wherein said plurality of gas springs is arranged in pairs on opposite sides of said outer ring.

9. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the inner rim;

a plurality of gas springs diverging outwardly from said inner rim to said outer rim and operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim; and

a sidewall cover assembly comprising

an inner sidewall cover coupled to said inner rim and extending radially outward toward said outer rim, said inner sidewall cover comprising an inner sidewall panel and an inner wiper arrangement extending from said inner sidewall panel, and

an outer sidewall cover coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward toward said inner rim and in sliding overlapping relation with said inner sidewall cover permitting relative movement between said inner sidewall cover and the outer sidewall cover, said outer sidewall cover comprising an outer sidewall panel and an outer wiper arrangement extending from said outer sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with said inner sidewall cover,

said inner wiper arrangement extending from said inner sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with said outer sidewall cover.

10. The wheel assembly of claim 9 wherein said inner wiper arrangement comprises a resilient wiper blade.

11. The wheel assembly of claim 9 wherein said outer wiper arrangement comprises a resilient wiper blade.

The wheel assembly of claim 9 comprising an outer ring coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward therefrom; and an inner ring coupled to said inner rim, extending radially outward from said inner rim and defining a closeable gap with adjacent portions of said outer ring to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement of said inner rim and outer rim.

13. A method of assembling a wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the method comprising:

coupling a plurality of gas springs between an inner rim to be coupled to the hub and an outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between the inner rim and the outer rim;

coupling an inner sidewall cover of a sidewall cover assembly to the inner rim and extending radially outward toward the outer rim; and

coupling an outer sidewall cover of the sidewall cover assembly to the outer rim and extending radially inward toward the inner rim and in sliding overlapping relation with the inner sidewall cover permitting relative movement between the inner sidewall cover and the outer sidewall cover;

the inner sidewall cover comprising an inner sidewall panel and an inner wiper arrangement extending from the inner sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with the outer sidewall cover; and the outer sidewall cover comprising an outer sidewall panel and an outer wiper arrangement extending from the outer sidewall panel toward and in sliding contact with the inner sidewall cover.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the inner wiper arrangement comprises a resilient wiper blade.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the outer wiper arrangement comprises a resilient wiper blade.

16. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the inner rim;

a plurality of gas springs operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim;

a sidewall cover assembly comprising

an inner sidewall cover coupled to said inner rim and extending radially outward toward said outer rim, and

an outer sidewall cover coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward toward said inner rim and in sliding overlapping relation with said inner sidewall cover permitting relative movement between said inner sidewall cover and said outer sidewall cover;

an outer ring coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward therefrom; and

an inner ring coupled to said inner rim, extending radially outward from said inner rim and defining a closeable gap with adjacent portions of said outer ring to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement of said inner rim and outer rim.

17. The wheel assembly of claim 16 wherein said plurality of gas springs have an operating stroke permitting said outer ring and inner ring to define a mechanical stop.

18. The wheel assembly of claim 16 wherein said plurality of gas springs is arranged in pairs on opposite sides of said outer ring.
