Abstract

A wheel assembly may include an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle, and an outer rim surrounding the hub. The wheel assembly may also include gas springs operatively coupled between the inner rim and the outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between the inner rim and the outer rim. The wheel assembly may also include tread assemblies carried by the outer rim. Each tread assembly may include a tread member support coupled to the outer rim, and spaced-apart tread members carried by the tread member support and defining a tread pattern therebetween. Each tread member may include at least one rubber layer, and at least one reinforcing layer in stacked relation.

Claims (35)

1. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the hub;

a plurality of gas springs operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim; and

a plurality of tread assemblies carried by said outer rim and each comprising

a tread member support coupled to the outer rim, and

a plurality of spaced-apart tread members carried by said tread member support and defining a tread pattern therebetween, each tread member comprising at least one rubber layer and at least one reinforcing layer in stacked relation.

2. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one rubber layer comprises a plurality of rubber layers carried by said tread member support in stacked relation and having progressively smaller areas extending radially outwardly from the tread member support.

3. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one reinforcing layer comprises a plurality of reinforcing layers carried by said tread member support in stacked relation and having progressively smaller areas extending radially outwardly from the tread member support.

4. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein each tread member comprises alternating rubber and reinforcing layers.

5. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one reinforcing layer comprises at least one mesh layer.

6. The wheel assembly of claim 1 wherein said at least one reinforcing layer comprises carbon.

7. The wheel assembly of claim 1 comprising an outer ring coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward therefrom and defining a closeable gap with adjacent portions of said inner rim to define a mechanical stop to limit movement of said inner rim relative to said outer rim.

8. The wheel assembly of claim 7 wherein said plurality of gas springs has an operating stroke permitting said outer ring and inner rim to define a mechanical stop.

9. The wheel assembly of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of hydraulic dampers operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim.

10. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the hub;

a plurality of gas springs operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim; and

a plurality of tread assemblies carried by said outer rim and each comprising

a tread member support coupled to the outer rim, and

a plurality of spaced-apart tread members carried by said tread member support and defining a tread pattern therebetween, each tread member comprising a plurality of alternating rubber and reinforcing layers in stacked relation, each rubber layer having progressively smaller areas extending radially outwardly from said tread member support.

11. The wheel assembly of claim 10 wherein said plurality of reinforcing layers have progressively smaller areas extending radially outwardly from the tread member support.

12. The wheel assembly of claim 10 wherein said plurality of reinforcing layers comprises a plurality of mesh layers.

13. The wheel assembly of claim 10 wherein said plurality of reinforcing layers comprises carbon.

14. The wheel assembly of claim 10 comprising an outer ring coupled to said outer rim and extending radially inward therefrom and defining a closeable gap with adjacent portions of said inner rim to define a mechanical stop to limit movement of said inner rim relative to said outer rim.

15. The wheel assembly of claim 14 wherein said plurality of gas springs has an operating stroke permitting said outer ring and inner rim to define a mechanical stop.

16. A method of making a wheel assembly comprising:

operatively coupling a plurality of gas springs between an inner rim to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle and an outer rim surrounding the hub to provide a gas suspension permitting relative movement between the inner rim and the outer rim; and

positioning a plurality of tread assemblies to be carried by the outer rim, each tread assembly comprising a tread member support coupled to the outer rim, a plurality of spaced-apart tread members carried by the tread member support and defining a tread pattern therebetween, and each tread member comprising at least one rubber layer and at least one reinforcing layer in stacked relation.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the at least one rubber layer comprises a plurality of rubber layers carried by the tread member support in stacked relation and having progressively smaller areas extending radially outwardly from the tread member support.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the at least one reinforcing layer comprises a plurality of reinforcing layers carried by the tread member support in stacked relation and having progressively smaller areas extending radially outwardly from the tread member support.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein each tread member comprises alternating rubber and reinforcing layers.

20. The method of claim 16 wherein the at least one reinforcing layer comprises at least one mesh layer.

21. The method of claim 16 wherein the at least one reinforcing layer comprises carbon.
