Abstract

An aerodynamic bicycle rim, the bicycle rim comprising a circumferential clincher portion adapted to seat a clincher bicycle tire, a nose a set of sidewalls, each sidewall extending radially from the nose to a respective circumferential outer edge to form a rim body having a maximum rim body width that is greater than a maximum width of the clincher bicycle tire and spaced radially inward of the clincher portion and radially outward from a centerline of the rim body. The aerodynamic bicycle rim seats the clincher bicycle tire to form an asymmetrical cross-sectional shape in which the widest part of the rim body is spaced from a centerline of the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape and there is a tangent line tangent to the clincher bicycle tire and a sidewall of the set of sidewalls, the tangent line tangent to the sidewall radially inward from the respective circumferential outer edge.

Claims (28)

1. An aerodynamic bicycle rim, the bicycle rim comprising:

a circumferential portion adapted to seat a bicycle tire;

a nose; and

a set of sidewalls, each sidewall extending radially from the nose to a respective circumferential outer edge to form a rim body having a maximum rim body width that is greater than a maximum width of the bicycle tire and spaced radially inward of the circumferential portion adapted to seat the bicycle tire and radially outward from a centerline of the rim body, wherein the rim body increases in width from the circumferential portion adapted to seat the bicycle tire to a widest part of the rim body and decreases in width from the widest part of the rim body to the nose;

wherein, the aerodynamic bicycle rim is operable to seat the bicycle tire so that the aerodynamic bicycle rim and the bicycle tire form an asymmetrical cross-sectional shape in which the widest part of the rim body is spaced from a centerline of the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape and there is a tangent line tangent to the bicycle tire and a sidewall of the set of sidewalls, the tangent line tangent to the sidewall radially inward from the respective circumferential outer edge and having a tangent angle of less than 17 degrees.

2. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 1 , wherein the circumferential portion adapted to seat the bicycle tire comprises a pair of circumferential tire bead hooks.

3. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 2 , wherein the rim body continuously increases in width moving radially inward along the pair of circumferential tire bead hooks.

4. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 2 , wherein each sidewall from the set of sidewalls comprises a straight portion extending radially inward from a respective tire bead hook from the pair of circumferential tire bead hooks and a curved portion extending from the straight portion to the nose.

5. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 4 , wherein the rim body increases in width from the straight portions of the set of sidewalls to the widest part of the rim body.

6. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 1 , wherein the aerodynamic bicycle rim is operable to seat the bicycle tire so that the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape of the bicycle tire and the rim body is asymmetrical about a widest portion of the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape.

7. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 6 , wherein the circumferential portion is a clincher portion adapted to seat a clincher bicycle tire.

8. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 1 , wherein the circumferential portion adapted to seat the bicycle tire is a clincher portion that is adapted to seat a clincher bicycle tire, wherein the clincher portion is integral with the rim body.

9. The aerodynamic bicycle rim of claim 1 , wherein the circumferential portion is a clincher portion adapted to seat a clincher bicycle tire.

10. An aerodynamic bicycle wheel comprising:

a bicycle tire; and

an aerodynamic bicycle rim, the aerodynamic bicycle rim comprising:

a circumferential portion seating the bicycle tire;

a nose; and

a set of sidewalls, each sidewall extending radially from the nose to a respective circumferential outer edge to form a rim body having a maximum rim body width that is greater than a maximum width of the bicycle tire and spaced radially inward of the circumferential portion seating the bicycle tire and radially outward from a centerline of the rim body, wherein the rim body increases in width from the circumferential portion seating the bicycle tire to a widest part of the rim body and decreases in width from the widest part of the rim body to the nose;

wherein, the aerodynamic bicycle rim seats the bicycle tire so that the aerodynamic bicycle rim and the bicycle tire form an asymmetrical cross-sectional shape in which the widest part of the rim body is spaced from a centerline of the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape and there is a tangent line tangent to the bicycle tire and a sidewall of the set of sidewalls, the tangent line tangent to the sidewall radially inward from the respective circumferential outer edge and having a tangent angle of less than 17 degrees.

11. The aerodynamic bicycle wheel of claim 10 , wherein the circumferential portion comprises a pair of circumferential tire bead hooks.

12. The aerodynamic bicycle wheel of claim 11 , wherein the rim body continuously increases in width moving radially inward along the pair of circumferential tire bead hooks to the nose.

13. The aerodynamic bicycle wheel of claim 11 , wherein each sidewall from the set of sidewalls comprises a straight portion extending radially inward from a respective tire bead hook from the pair of circumferential tire bead hooks and a curved portion extending from the straight portion to the nose.

14. The aerodynamic bicycle wheel of claim 13 , wherein the rim body increases in width from the straight portions of the set of sidewalls to the widest part of the rim body.

15. The aerodynamic bicycle wheel of claim 8 , wherein the bicycle rim seats the bicycle tire so that the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape of the bicycle tire and the rim body is asymmetrical about a widest portion of the asymmetrical cross-sectional shape.
