Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described including a blood pump that includes an impeller having proximal and distal end portions, a frame disposed around the impeller, and a shaft member that passes through the proximal and distal end portions of the impeller and that is configured to impart rotational motion to the impeller. The impeller defines a radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is introduced into a subject's body and a non-radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is configured to pump blood within the subject's body. The distal end portion of the impeller is configured to slide over the shaft member as the impeller changes from its radially-constrained configuration to its non-radially-constrained configuration. Other applications are also described.

Claims (44)

1 . An apparatus, comprising:

a blood pump configured to be placed inside a body of subject, the blood pump comprising:

an impeller comprising proximal and distal end portions;

a frame disposed around the impeller;

a shaft member that passes through the proximal and distal end portions of the impeller and that is configured to impart rotational motion to the impeller,

the proximal end portion of the impeller being coupled to the shaft member, such that the proximal end portion of the impeller is held in an axially-fixed position with respect to the shaft member, and

the distal end portion of the impeller not being coupled to the shaft member, such that the distal end portion is not held in an axially-fixed position with respect to the shaft member, and

the impeller defining a radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is introduced into the subject's body and a non-radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is configured to pump blood within the subject's body, the distal end portion of the impeller being configured to slide over the shaft member as the impeller changes from its radially-constrained configuration to its non-radially-constrained configuration.

2 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the distal and proximal end portions of the impeller comprise distal and proximal rings.

3 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the impeller is configured to be placed inside a blood vessel of the subject.

4 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a guide catheter, wherein:

the guide catheter is configured to maintain the impeller in its radially-constrained configuration during introduction of the impeller into the subject's body, and

upon the impeller being released from the guide catheter, the impeller is configured to self-expand to thereby cause the distal end portion to slide over the shaft member proximally, such that the impeller assumes its non-radially-constrained configuration.

5 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the impeller comprises:

at least one helical elongate element that extends from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion;

an axially-elongatable axial portion; and

a film of material supported by the helical elongate element so as to define a blade of the impeller.

6 . The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the impeller further comprises at least one flexible elongate element extending from the axially-elongatable axial portion to the helical elongate element, the at least one flexible elongate element being selected from the group consisting of: a string and a wire.

7 . The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the at least one helical elongate element that extends from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion comprises two helical elongate elements that extend from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion, wherein the film of material comprises a respective film of material supported by each of the helical elongate elements so as to define respective blades of the impeller.

8 . The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one helical elongate element that extends from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion comprises three or more helical elongate elements that extend from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion, wherein the film of material comprises a respective film of material supported by each of the helical elongate elements so as to define respective blades of the impeller.

9 . The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the axially-elongatable axial portion comprises an axially-elongatable telescopic shaft.

10 . The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the axially-elongatable telescopic shaft comprises an outer tubular member to which the distal end portion of the impeller is coupled and an inner tubular member which is couped to the shaft member and to which the proximal end portion of the impeller is coupled, such that the proximal end portion of the impeller is coupled to the shaft member via the inner tubular member.

11 . An apparatus, comprising:

a blood pump configured to be placed inside a body of subject, the blood pump comprising:

an impeller comprising proximal and distal end portions;

a frame disposed around the impeller;

a shaft member that passes through the proximal and distal end portions of the impeller and that is configured to impart rotational motion to the impeller,

the distal end portion of the impeller being coupled to the shaft member, such that the distal end portion of the impeller is held in an axially-fixed position with respect to the shaft member, and

the proximal end portion of the impeller not being coupled to the shaft member, such that the proximal end portion is not held in an axially-fixed position with respect to the shaft member, and

the impeller defining a radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is introduced into the subject's body and a non-radially-constrained configuration in which the impeller is configured to pump blood within the subject's body, the shaft member is configured to slide within the proximal end portion of the impeller as the impeller changes from its radially-constrained configuration to its non-radially-constrained configuration.

12 . The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the distal and proximal end portions of the impeller comprise distal and proximal rings.

13 . The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the impeller is configured to be placed inside a blood vessel of the subject.

14 . The apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising a guide catheter, wherein:

the guide catheter is configured to maintain the impeller in its radially-constrained configuration during introduction of the impeller into the subject's body, and

upon the impeller being released from the guide catheter, the impeller is configured to self-expand to thereby cause the shaft member to slide proximally with respect to the proximal end portion of the impeller, such that the impeller assumes its non-radially-constrained configuration.

15 . The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the impeller comprises:

at least one helical elongate element that extends from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion;

an axially-elongatable axial portion; and

a film of material supported by the helical elongate element so as to define a blade of the impeller.

16 . The apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein the impeller further comprises at least one flexible elongate element extending from the axially-elongatable axial portion to the helical elongate element, the at least one flexible elongate element being selected from the group consisting of: a string and a wire.
