Abstract

An autostereoscopic three-dimensional display system for surgical robotics has an autostereoscopic three-dimensional display configured to receive and display video from a surgical robotics camera, and a first sensor assembly and a second sensor assembly. A processor is configured to detect and track an eye position or a head position of a user relative to the display based on processing output data of the first sensor assembly, and to detect and track a gaze of the user based on processing output data of the second sensor assembly. The processor further is configured to modify or control an operation of the display system based on the detected gaze of the user. A spatial relationship of the display also can be automatically adjusted in relation to the user based on the detected eye or head position of the user to optimize the user's visualization of three-dimensional images on the display.

Claims (35)

1. A surgical robotic system, comprising:

a display system that includes an autostereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display configured to display 3D images for visualization by a user without use of 3D glasses and a sensor configured to detect eyes of the user; and

at least one processor configured to:

adjust a spatial relationship between the user and the 3D display based on the detected eyes of the user to maintain a distance between the eyes of the user and the 3D display, and

pause an operation of the surgical robotic system including the displayed 3D images on the 3D display responsive to determining that the eyes of the user are not directed towards the 3D display for at least a threshold period of time.

2. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a seat configured to support the user while the user visualizes the 3D images on the 3D display; and

one or more actuators,

wherein the at least one processor adjusts the spatial relationship by causing the one or more actuators to adjust a position or an orientation of at least one of 1) the 3D display respective to the user and 2) the seat respective to the 3D display.

3. The surgical robotic system of claim 2 , wherein the operation paused by the surgical robotic system comprises an adjustment of the position or the orientation of at least one of the 3D display and the seat.

4. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , further comprising a robotic arm, wherein the at least one processor pauses the operation of the robotic arm responsive to determining that the eyes of the user are not directed towards the 3D display for at least the threshold period of time.

5. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , further comprising a camera that is configured to produce the 3D images for display by the 3D display, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to adjust the camera based on the detected eyes of the user such that an area of the displayed 3D images is adjusted on the 3D display.

6. The surgical robotic system of claim 5 , wherein the camera is adjusted by at least one rotating the camera about at least one axis and translating a lens of the camera.

7. The surgical robotic system of claim 5 , wherein the adjustment of the camera causes the area of the displayed 3D images to be moved along the 3D display to a centered location on the 3D display.

8. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises a camera to generate output used by the at least one processor to detect and track a position of the eyes of the user relative to the 3D display.

9. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to, subsequent to pausing the operation,

detecting, using the sensor, that the eyes of the user are again directed towards the 3D display; and

resuming the operation of the surgical robotic system responsive to determining that the eyes of the user are again directed towards the 3D display.

10. The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to, responsive to determining that the eyes of the user are not directed towards the 3D display for at least the threshold period of time, output a notification by at least one of playing back one or more sounds through a speaker and displaying one or more images through the 3D display.

11. A method performed by a surgical robotic system, the method comprising:

displaying three-dimensional (3D) images on an autostereoscopic 3D display for visualization by a user without use of 3D glasses;

receiving sensor data from a sensor configured to detect eyes of the user;

adjusting a spatial relationship between the user and the 3D display based on the sensor data to maintain a distance between the eyes of the user and the 3D display; and

pausing an operation of the surgical robotic system including the displayed 3D images on the 3D display responsive to determining that the eyes of the user are not directed towards the 3D display for at least a threshold period of time based on the sensor data.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein adjusting the spatial relationship comprises signaling one or more actuators to adjust a position or an orientation of at least one of 1) the 3D display respective to the user and 2) a seat for supporting the user respective to the 3D display.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the operation that is paused comprises an adjustment of the position or the orientation of the at least one of the 3D display and the seat.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the surgical robotic system comprises a robotic arm, wherein the paused operation is of the robotic arm.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving the 3D images from a camera; and

adjusting the camera based on the sensor data such that an area of the displayed 3D images is adjusted on the 3D display.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein adjusting the camera comprises at least one of:

rotating the camera about at least one axis; and

translating a lens of the camera.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the adjusting of the camera causes the area of the displayed 3D images to be moved along the 3D display to a centered location on the 3D display.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising outputting, responsive to determining that the eyes of the user are not directed towards the 3D display for at least the threshold period of time, a notification by at least one of playing back one or more sounds through a speaker and displaying one or more images through the 3D display.
