Abstract

Articles and methods involving electrochemical cells and/or electrochemical cell preproducts comprising passivating agents are generally provided. In certain embodiments, an electrochemical cell includes first and second passivating agents. In some embodiments, an electrochemical cell may include a first electrode comprising a first surface, a second electrode (e.g., a counter electrode with respect to the first electrode) comprising a second surface, a first passivating agent configured and arranged to passivate the first surface, and a second passivating agent configured and arranged to passivate the second surface.

Claims (43)

1 . An electrochemical cell, comprising:

a first electrode comprising lithium metal;

a protective layer disposed on the first electrode, wherein the protective layer is electrically insulating and comprises one or more glasses, ceramics, and/or glassy-ceramics;

a second electrode;

a separator;

an electrolyte;

a first passivating agent, wherein the first passivating agent comprises a sultone;

a second passivating agent, wherein the second passivating agent comprises a species capable of undergoing polymerization and is present in an amount of greater than or equal to 15 wt % versus the total weight of the electrolyte; and

wherein the species capable of undergoing polymerization lacks a vinyl group but is capable of developing a vinyl group upon electrochemical cell cycling, wherein the species lacking the vinyl group is a fluoroalkyl carbonate.

2 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the fluoroalkyl carbonate is fluoroethylene carbonate.

3 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the sultone is prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone.

4 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises LiN(SO 2 F) 2 .

5 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises LiBF 4 .

6 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises LiPF 6 .

7 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises ethyl methyl carbonate.

8 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte further comprises dimethyl carbonate.

9 . A method comprising cycling the electrochemical cell of claim 1 .

10 . A method as in claim 9 , wherein the cycling is performed under an anisotropic force normal to a surface of the electrode comprising lithium metal.

11 . An electrochemical cell, comprising:

a first electrode comprising lithium metal;

a protective layer disposed on the first electrode, wherein the protective layer is electrically insulating and comprises one or more glasses, ceramics, and/or glassy-ceramics;

a second electrode;

a separator;

an electrolyte containing LiN(SO 2 F) 2 ;

a first passivating agent, wherein the first passivating agent comprises a sultone; and

a second passivating agent comprising fluoroethylene carbonate.

12 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 11 , wherein the sultone comprises prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone.

13 . An electrochemical cell, comprising:

a first electrode comprising lithium metal;

a protective layer disposed on the first electrode, wherein the protective layer is electrically insulating and comprises one or more glasses, ceramics, and/or glassy-ceramics;

a second electrode;

a separator;

an electrolyte containing LiBF 4 ;

a first passivating agent, wherein the first passivating agent comprises a sultone; and

a second passivating agent comprising fluoroethylene carbonate present in an amount of greater than or equal to 15 wt % versus the total weight of the electrolyte.

14 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , further comprising:

LiBF 4 ;

LiPF 6 ; and

a carbonate selected from the group consisting of dimethyl carbonate and ethyl methyl carbonate,

wherein the sultone is prop-1-ene-1,3-sultone, and

wherein the species capable of undergoing polymerization is fluoroethylene carbonate.

15 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 1 , wherein the second passivating agent is present in an amount of less than or equal to 30 wt % versus the total weight of the electrolyte.

16 . An electrochemical cell as in claim 13 , wherein the second passivating agent comprising fluoroethylene carbonate is present in an amount of less than or equal to 30 wt % versus the total weight of the electrolyte.
