Abstract

Non-woven graft materials for use in specialized surgical procedures such as neurosurgical procedures, methods for making the non-woven graft materials, and methods for repairing tissue such as neurological tissue using the non-woven graft materials are disclosed. More particularly, disclosed are non-woven graft materials including at least two distinct fiber compositions composed of different polymeric materials, methods for making the non-woven graft materials and methods for repairing tissue in an individual in need thereof using the non-woven graft materials.

Claims (17)

1 . A resorbable graft material comprising: a first non-woven fiber composition comprising a polymer selected from the group consisting of polycaprolactone, polydioxanone, poly(glycolic acid), poly(L-lactic acid), poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), poly(lactide-co-glycolide), poly(L-lactide), poly(D,L-lactide), poly(ethylene glycol), montmorillonite, poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone), poly(ε-caprolactone-co-ethyl ethylene phosphate), poly[bis(p-methylphenoxy) phosphazene], poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), poly(ester urethane) urea, polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, poly(p-dioxanone), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(phosphazene), poly(ethylene-co-vinylacetate), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), polymer nanoclay nanocomposites, poly(ethylenimine), poly(ethyleneoxide), polyvinylpyrrolidone, polystyrene, and combinations thereof; a second non-woven fiber composition comprising a polymer selected from the group consisting of polycaprolactone (poly(ε-caprolactone), polydioxanone, poly(glycolic acid), poly(L-lactic acid), poly(lactide-co-glycolide), poly(L-lactide), poly(D,L-lactide), poly(ethylene glycol), montmorillonite, poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone), poly(ε-caprolactone-co-ethyl ethylene phosphate), poly[bis(p-methylphenoxy) phosphazene], poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), poly(ester urethane) urea, poly(p-dioxanone), polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, poly(ethylene-co-vinylacetate), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(phosphazene), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylenimine), poly(ethyleneoxide), polyvinylpyrrolidone, polystyrene, and combinations thereof; a bottom surface, a top surface, and a plurality of pores; a plurality of protrusions arising from the bottom surface of the resorbable graft material and forming a pattern of protrusions; and a plurality of depressions on the top surface of the resorbable graft material and forming a pattern of depressions, wherein the plurality of protrusions is distributed throughout the bottom surface, and wherein the plurality of depressions is distributed throughout the top surface; wherein the first non-woven fiber composition and the second non-woven fiber composition are commingled throughout a thickness of the resorbable non-woven graft material.

2 . The resorbable graft material of claim 1 , wherein the first non-woven fiber composition and the second non-woven fiber composition are uniformly distributed throughout the resorbable non-woven graft material.

3 . The resorbable graft material of claim 1 , wherein the first non-woven fiber composition comprises about 90 mol % glycolide and 10 mol % L-lactide.

4 . The resorbable graft material of claim 1 , wherein a ratio of the first non-woven fiber composition to the second non-woven fiber composition is in a range from about 10:1 to about 1:10.

5 . The resorbable graft material of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first non-woven fiber composition and the second non-woven fiber composition comprise a mean fiber diameter of less than 5 μm.

6 . The resorbable graft material of claim 5 , wherein the mean fiber diameter is less than 2 μm.

7 . The resorbable graft material of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pores has a mean pore size of less than 300 μm.sup.2.

8 . The resorbable graft material of claim 1 , wherein the protrusions have a circular shape.

9 . A method for preparing a resorbable graft material, the method comprising: contacting a first non-woven fiber composition comprising a polymer selected from the group consisting of polycaprolactone, polydioxanone, poly(glycolic acid), poly(L-lactic acid), poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), poly(lactide-co-glycolide), poly(L-lactide), poly(D,L-lactide), poly(ethylene glycol), montmorillonite, poly(L-lactide-co-8-caprolactone), poly(ε-caprolactone-co-ethyl ethylene phosphate), poly[bis(p-methylphenoxy) phosphazene], poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), poly(ester urethane) urea, poly(p-dioxanone), polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, poly(ethylene-co-vinylacetate), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(phosphazene), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), polymer nanoclay nanocomposites, poly(ethylenimine), poly(ethyleneoxide), polyvinylpyrrolidone, polystyrene, and combinations thereof; and a second non-woven fiber composition comprising a polymer selected from the group consisting of polycaprolactone (poly(ε-caprolactone), polydioxanone, poly(glycolic acid), poly(L-lactic acid), poly(lactide-co-glycolide), poly(L-lactide), poly(D,L-lactide), poly(ethylene glycol), montmorillonite, poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone), poly(ε-caprolactone-co-ethyl ethylene phosphate), poly[bis(p-methylphenoxy) phosphazene], poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), poly(ester urethane) urea, poly(p-dioxanone), polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, poly(ethylene-co-vinylacetate), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(phosphazene), poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), poly(ethylenimine), poly(ethyleneoxide), polyvinylpyrrolidone, polystyrene, and combinations thereof; to form a non-woven graft material, wherein the non-woven graft material comprises a plurality of pores, wherein the non-woven graft material comprises a plurality of protrusions on a bottom surface of the resorbable non-woven graft material, wherein the non-woven graft material comprises a plurality of depressions on a top surface of the resorbable non-woven graft material, wherein the plurality of protrusions are distributed throughout the bottom surface and the plurality of depressions are distributed throughout the bottom surface, and wherein the plurality of protrusions form a pattern of protrusions, and wherein the plurality of depressions form a pattern of depressions; wherein the first non-woven fiber composition and the second non-woven fiber composition are commingled throughout a thickness of the resorbable non-woven graft material.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising forming the plurality of projections by pressing or stamping.

11 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising forming the plurality of depressions by pressing or stamping.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first non-woven fiber composition and the second non-woven fiber composition are uniformly distributed throughout the resorbable non-woven graft material.

13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first non-woven fiber composition comprises about 90 mol % glycolide and 10 mol % L-lactide.

14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the first non-woven fiber composition and the second non-woven fiber composition have a mean fiber diameter of less than 5 μm.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the mean fiber diameter is less than 2 μm.

16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of pores comprises a mean pore size of less than 300 μm.sup.2.

17 . The method of claim 9 , wherein a ratio of the first non-woven fiber composition to the second non-woven fiber composition is in a range from about 10:1 to about 1:10.
