Physiological parameter alarm delay
Medical monitoring systems and methods for reducing the frequency of notifications of transient alarms are disclosed. A medical monitoring system can collect a signal representative of the physiological condition of a patient and can determine a physiological parameter using the collected signal. The medical monitoring system can detect an alarm condition for the physiological parameter. The medical monitoring system can then delay notification of the alarm condition until it persists for a predetermined alarm notification delay time.
1 . A method for reducing a frequency of patient monitoring alarm notifications from one or more physiological monitoring devices, the method comprising:
receiving patient monitoring data at a remote computing system at a site that is remote from a hospital where a patient is being monitored with a patient monitoring device, the patient monitoring data comprising information about an occurrence and duration of patient monitoring alarm conditions, wherein the patient monitoring data is transmitted at the remote computing system responsive to a determination that a caregiver is not in proximity of the patient monitoring device, wherein the proximity is determined based on an electronic token associated with the caregiver;
providing to a caregiver at the remote computing system, an effect of an alarm notification delay time at the patient monitoring device, wherein the effect is determined from the patient monitoring data;
receiving, at the remote computing system, an indication from the caregiver to delay an alarm at the patient monitoring device based on the provided patient monitoring data; and
controlling the patient monitoring device to suppress an alarm at the patient monitoring device based on the received indication from the caregiver at the remote computing device.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the indication from the caregiver selects an alarm notification delay time from a plurality of available alarm notification delay times.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the caregiver is not in proximity of the patient monitoring device comprises detecting an absence of a signal from the electronic token within a predefined range of the patient monitoring device.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic token comprises at least one of a wireless badge, a mobile computing device, a real-time location system identifier, a Bluetooth identifier, or an RFID tag.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the patient monitoring device comprises suppressing an audible alarm notification while maintaining a visual alarm indication.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein suppressing the alarm is applied to alarm notifications having a severity below a predetermined severity level.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising restoring alarm notifications at the patient monitoring device upon determining that the caregiver is in proximity of the patient monitoring device.
8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a confidence metric associated with the patient monitoring data, wherein suppressing the alarm is based on the confidence metric.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the remote computing system controls alarm behavior for a plurality of patient monitoring devices associated with different patients.
10 . A remote computing system for reducing a frequency of patient monitoring alarm notifications from one or more physiological monitoring devices, wherein the remote computing system is at a site that is remote from a hospital where a patient is being monitored with a patient monitoring device, the remote computing system comprising one or more hardware processors configured to:
receive patient monitoring data, the patient monitoring data comprising information about an occurrence of patient monitoring alarm conditions, wherein the patient monitoring data is transmitted at the remote computing system responsive to a determination that a caregiver is not in proximity of the patient monitoring device, wherein the proximity is determined based on an electronic token associated with the caregiver;
provide to a caregiver an effect of an alarm notification delay time at the patient monitoring device, wherein the effect is determined from the patient monitoring data;
receive an indication from the caregiver to delay an alarm at the patient monitoring device based on the provided patient monitoring data; and
control the patient monitoring device to suppress an alarm at the patient monitoring device based on the received indication from the caregiver.
11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the indication from the caregiver selects an alarm notification delay time from a plurality of available alarm notification delay times.
12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein determining that the caregiver is not in proximity of the patient monitoring device comprises detecting an absence of a signal from the electronic token within a predefined range of the patient monitoring device.
13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the electronic token comprises at least one of a wireless badge, a mobile computing device, a real-time location system identifier, a Bluetooth identifier, or an RFID tag.
14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein controlling the patient monitoring device comprises suppressing an audible alarm notification while maintaining a visual alarm indication.
15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein suppressing the alarm is applied to alarm notifications having a severity below a predetermined severity level.
16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more hardware processors are further configured to restore alarm notifications at the patient monitoring device upon determining that the caregiver is in proximity of the patient monitoring device.
17 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more hardware processors are further configured to determine a confidence metric associated with the patient monitoring data, wherein suppressing the alarm is based on the confidence metric.
18 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the remote computing system controls alarm behavior for a plurality of patient monitoring devices associated with different patients.
