Abstract

A finger-worn wearable ring device may include a ring-shaped housing, a printed circuit board, and a sensor module that includes one or more light-emitting components and one or more light-receiving components. The wearable ring device may further include a communication module configured to wirelessly communicate with an application executable on a user device.

Claims (74)

1. A wearable ring device configured to be worn on a finger of a user and detect physical movement, skin temperature, and a heart rate of the user, comprising:

a housing comprising an exterior surface of the wearable ring device and an interior surface of the wearable ring device, wherein at least a portion of the interior surface is configured to contact the user when the wearable ring device is worn by the user, the housing having an interior diameter between 12 mm and 24 mm, an exterior diameter between 18 mm and 30 mm, a width between 3 mm and 8 mm, and a thickness between 1.5 mm and 3 mm;

a curved battery that has a size and shape configured to fit within a curved portion of the housing, the curved battery extending along a first portion of a curved perimeter of the housing;

an antenna that is electrically coupled with the curved battery and configured to:

receive one or more radio frequency signals; and

convert the one or more radio frequency signals to an electrical current that is operable to recharge the curved battery;

a printed circuit board electrically coupled with the curved battery, the printed circuit board extending along a second portion of the curved perimeter of the housing; and

one or more components electrically coupled with the curved battery and the printed circuit board, the one or more components comprising:

an accelerometer, a gyroscope, or both, configured to detect the physical movement of the user;

a temperature sensor configured to detect the skin temperature of the user;

a first light emitting diode (LED) configured to emit visible light and a second LED configured to emit one of infrared light or near-infrared light; and

a light sensor configured to detect one or more of the visible light, the infrared light, or the near-infrared light to support detection of the heart rate of the user.

2. The wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna is configured to receive the one or more radio frequency signals and convert the one or more radio frequency signals to the electrical current while the wearable ring device is worn by the user.

3. The wearable ring device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

determine a signal strength associated with the one or more radio frequency signals received via the antenna; and

determine a distance between the wearable ring device and an external device based at least in part on the signal strength.

4. The wearable ring device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a Bluetooth chip electrically coupled with the antenna and the printed circuit board, wherein the antenna is configured to wirelessly communicate Bluetooth signals between the Bluetooth chip and a mobile device.

5. The wearable ring device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a near-field communication (NFC) chip electrically coupled with the antenna and the printed circuit board, wherein the antenna is configured to wirelessly communicate NFC signals from the NFC chip to one or more external devices, and wherein the NFC signals are configured to cause the one or more external devices to perform one or more functions based at least in part on detection of the NFC signals.

6. The wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna is configured to communicate near-field communication (NFC) signals, and wherein the wearable ring device further comprises one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

determine that the physical movement is associated with a gesture of the user; and

terminate communications associated with the NFC signals based at least in part on the gesture.

7. The wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the wearable ring device further comprises one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

authenticate an identity of the user; and

enable communications via the antenna based at least in part on authenticating the identity of the user.

8. A wearable ring device configured to be worn on a finger of a user and detect physical movement, skin temperature, and a heart rate of the user, comprising:

a housing comprising an exterior surface of the wearable ring device and an interior surface of the wearable ring device, wherein at least a portion of the interior surface is configured to contact the user when the wearable ring device is worn by the user;

a curved battery that has a size and shape configured to fit within a curved portion of the housing, the curved battery extending along a first portion of a curved perimeter of the housing;

an antenna configured to receive one or more wireless signals;

a printed circuit board electrically coupled with the curved battery, the printed circuit board extending along a second portion of the curved perimeter of the housing;

one or more components electrically coupled with the curved battery and the printed circuit board, the one or more components comprising:

an accelerometer, a gyroscope, or both, configured to detect the physical movement of the user;

a temperature sensor configured to detect the skin temperature of the user;

a first light emitting diode (LED) configured to emit visible light and a second LED configured to emit one of infrared light or near-infrared light; and

a light sensor configured to detect one or more of the visible light, the infrared light, or the near-infrared light to support detection of the heart rate of the user; and

one or more processors electrically coupled with the curved battery, the antenna, the printed circuit board, and the one or more components, wherein the one or more processors are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

determine a signal strength associated with the one or more wireless signals received via the antenna; and

determine a distance between the wearable ring device and an external device based at least in part on the signal strength.

9. The wearable ring device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

generate an alert based at least in part on the distance exceeding a threshold distance.

The wearable ring device of claim 9 , wherein the wearable ring device further comprises an actuator configured to provide at least one of haptic feedback or physical feedback, an indicator module configured to provide at least one of visual feedback or audio feedback, or any combination thereof, and wherein the alert comprises the haptic feedback, the physical feedback, the visual feedback, the audio feedback, or any combination thereof.

11. The wearable ring device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

transmit, via the antenna, a signal based at least in part on the distance, wherein the signal is configured to cause the external device, a mobile device, or both, to generate an alert.

12. A wearable ring device configured to be worn on a finger of a user, comprising:

a housing comprising an exterior surface of the wearable ring device and an interior surface of the wearable ring device, wherein at least a portion of the interior surface is configured to contact the user when the wearable ring device is worn by the user, the housing having an interior diameter between 12 mm and 24 mm, an exterior diameter between 18 mm and 30 mm, and a thickness between 1.5 mm and 3 mm;

a curved battery that has a size and shape configured to fit within a curved portion of the housing, the curved battery extending along a first portion of a curved perimeter of the housing;

an antenna configured to support wireless communications between the wearable ring device and a mobile device;

a printed circuit board electrically coupled with the curved battery, the printed circuit board extending along a second portion of the curved perimeter of the housing; and

one or more components electrically coupled with the curved battery and the printed circuit board, the one or more components comprising:

an accelerometer, a gyroscope, or both, configured to detect physical movement of the user;

a temperature sensor configured to detect skin temperature of the user;

a first light emitting diode (LED) configured to emit visible light and a second LED configured to emit one of infrared light or near-infrared light; and

a light sensor configured to detect one or more of the visible light, the infrared light, or the near-infrared light to support detection of a heart rate of the user.

13. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , wherein the antenna or a second antenna is configured to:

receive one or more radio frequency signals; and

convert the one or more radio frequency signals to an electrical current that is operable to recharge the curved battery.

14. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , further comprising one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

determine a signal strength associated with one or more radio frequency signals received via the antenna; and

determine a distance between the wearable ring device and an external device based at least in part on the signal strength.

15. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , further comprising:

a Bluetooth chip electrically coupled with the antenna and the printed circuit board, wherein the antenna is configured to wirelessly communicate Bluetooth signals between the Bluetooth chip and the mobile device.

16. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , further comprising:

a near-field communication (NFC) chip electrically coupled with the antenna and the printed circuit board, wherein the antenna is configured to wirelessly communicate NFC signals between the NFC chip and one or more external devices, and wherein the NFC signals are configured to cause the one or more external devices to perform one or more functions based at least in part on detection of the NFC signals.

17. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , wherein the wearable ring device further comprises one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

determine that the physical movement is associated with a gesture of the user; and

terminate communications via the antenna based at least in part on the gesture.

18. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , wherein the wearable ring device further comprises one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to:

authenticate an identity of the user based at least in part on a user input to the mobile device; and

enable communications via the antenna based at least in part on authenticating the identity of the user.

19. The wearable ring device of claim 12 , wherein the housing comprises:

an external housing comprising the exterior surface of the wearable ring device, an internal surface, a first flange, and a second flange, wherein the internal surface, the first flange, and the second flange at least partially enclose an internal space, and wherein the curved battery, the antenna, the printed circuit board, the one or more components, or any combination thereof, are disposed at least partially within the internal space; and

an internal housing comprising the interior surface of the wearable ring device, wherein the internal housing is coupled with the external housing to at least partially surround the curved battery, the antenna, the printed circuit board, and the one or more components.

20. The wearable ring device of claim 19 , wherein the internal housing comprises a potting material that forms at least a portion of the interior surface of the wearable ring device and at least partially fills the internal space.
