Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatus are provided for automated identification of baseline data and changes in state in a wireless communications spectrum, by identifying sources of signal emission in the spectrum by automatically detecting signals, analyzing signals, comparing signal data to historical and reference data, creating corresponding signal profiles, and determining information about the baseline data and changes in state based upon the measured and analyzed data in near real time, which is stored on each apparatus or device and/or on a remote server computer that aggregates data from each apparatus or device.

Claims (55)

1 . A method for automatic signal detection in an electromagnetic environment, comprising:

forming a knowledge map of the electromagnetic environment based on power level measurements of one or more frequency bins within the electromagnetic environment;

averaging a spectral sweep of the electromagnetic environment;

identifying positive and negative gradients by accumulating a gradient value along the spectral sweep, then evaluating the gradient value when a slope of the spectral sweep changes direction;

matching the positive and negative gradients;

removing areas identified by the matched positive and negative gradients and connecting points between removed areas to determine a baseline;

decompressing and reconstructing at least one signal using compressed data for deltas and the baseline, creating a reconstructed signal; and

identifying the at least one signal based upon whether a signal parameter of the at least one signal matches any signal parameters in signal characteristic listing data in a database including hardware parameters;

wherein the hardware parameters include antenna position, antenna type, orientation, azimuth, gain, and/or equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) for a transmitter associated with the at least one signal;

wherein the deltas are differentials from the baseline;

wherein detecting the at least one signal in the electromagnetic environment comprises fine-tuning a threshold of power level on a segmented basis while extracting at least one temporal feature from the knowledge map; and

wherein the threshold of power level is fine-tuned based on the hardware parameters and/or stored terrain data.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising indexing the power level measurements for each frequency interval in a spectrum section.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying the knowledge map on a display device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein frequency resolution of the knowledge map is based on a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) size setting.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising smoothing the spectral sweep using a smoothing filter that takes an average of the power level measurements over time.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold of power level is operable to be variable between the one or more frequency bins.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein creating the reconstructed signal includes filling gaps where data of the at least one signal is absent.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein creating the deltas provides for signal identification, interference identification, neighboring band identification, device identification, and/or signal optimization.

9 . A system for automatic signal detection in an electromagnetic environment, comprising:

at least one apparatus for detecting signals in the electromagnetic environment;

wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to measure power levels of one or more frequency bins within the electromagnetic environment;

wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to form a knowledge map based on the power level measurements of the one or more frequency bins within the electromagnetic environment;

wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to remove areas identified by matched positive and negative gradients and connect points between removed areas to determine a baseline;

wherein the matched positive and negative gradients are identified by accumulating a gradient value along a spectral sweep, then evaluating the gradient value when a slope of the spectral sweep changes direction;

wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to identify at least one signal based upon whether a signal parameter of the at least one signal matches any signal parameters in signal characteristic listing data in a database including hardware parameters;

wherein the hardware parameters include antenna position, antenna type, orientation, azimuth, gain, and/or equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) for a transmitter associated with the at least one signal;

wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to decompress and reconstruct the at least one signal using compressed data for deltas and the baseline, creating a reconstructed signal;

wherein the deltas are differentials from the baseline;

wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to fine-tune a threshold of power level on a segmented basis while extracting at least one temporal feature from the knowledge map;

wherein the threshold of power level is fine-tuned based on the hardware parameters and/or stored terrain data; and

wherein the threshold of power level is operable to be variable between the one or more frequency bins.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to index the power level measurements for each frequency interval in a spectrum section.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to fill gaps during creation of the reconstructed signal where data of the at least one signal is absent.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein frequency resolution of the knowledge map is based on a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) size setting.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one apparatus is operable to smooth the spectral sweep based on a smoothing filter that takes an average of the power level measurements over time.

14 . The system of claim 9 , further comprising at least one display device operable to display the knowledge map.

15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the deltas are operable to be used for signal identification, interference identification, neighboring band identification, device identification, and/or signal optimization.

16 . A method for automatic signal detection in an electromagnetic environment, comprising:

measuring power levels of one or more frequency bins within the electromagnetic environment;

averaging a spectral sweep;

identifying positive and negative gradients by accumulating a gradient value along the spectral sweep, then evaluating the gradient value when a slope of the spectral sweep changes direction;
