Abstract

A method is provided for operating a wearable audio device. At least one point of interest is detected in a vicinity of a user wearing the audio device. In response to the detection, audibility of sounds received in a direction of the at least one point of interest is improved, while attenuating sounds received in at least one other direction. The improved sounds are output for delivering by the audio device to at least one ear of the user.

Claims (60)

1. A method for operating a wearable audio device, comprising:

detecting at least one point of interest in a vicinity of a user wearing the audio device;

improving audibility, in response to the detection, of sounds received in a direction of the at least one point of interest while attenuating sounds received in at least one other direction; and

outputting at least the improved sounds for delivering by the audio device to at least one ear of the user, wherein the improved sounds are delivered by at least one speaker of the audio device to the at least one ear of the user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein improving the audibility comprises focusing one or more microphones of the audio device in the direction of the at least one point of interest to receive the sounds emanating from the point of interest, while attenuating sounds in at least one unfocused direction.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the detecting comprises:

receiving information regarding a first position of the user;

receiving information regarding a second position of the at least one point of interest; and

determining, based on the received first and second positions, that the user is in the vicinity of the at least one point of interest.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving pre-recorded audio associated with the at least one point of interest,

wherein the outputting further comprises outputting the pre-recorded audio for delivering by the audio device along with the improved sounds to the at least one ear of the user.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

receiving configuration information configuring the outputting of the pre-recorded audio and the improved sounds; and

outputting the pre-recorded audio and the improved sounds based on the configuration.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the outputting comprises intermittently outputting the pre-recorded audio, wherein the improved sounds are outputted when the pre-recorded is not outputted.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the outputting comprises outputting the improved sounds at a reduced volume when the pre-recorded audio is being outputted.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving head tracking information indicating a head position of the user, wherein at least a portion of the audio device is coupled to the head of the user and an orientation of the audio device changes with the head position of the user; and

setting a direction relative to the audio device for the improving audibility of the sounds based on the received head tracking information.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the setting comprises changing the direction relative to the audio device based on the head tracking information to maintain alignment with the direction of the point of interest.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving user preferences relating to a set of points of interests; and

selecting, based on the user preferences, the at least one point of interest for the detecting.

11. A wearable audio device, comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit and receive signals;

a set of microphones for receiving sound in an environment external to the audio device; and

a processing unit configured to:

detect at least one point of interest in a vicinity of a user wearing the audio device; and

improve audibility, in response to the detection, of a portion of the sound received in a direction of the at least one point of interest while fading out one or more remaining portions of the sound received in at least one other direction; and

at least one speaker for delivering sounds to the ears of the user, wherein the improved sounds are delivered by the at least one speaker to at least one ear of the user.

12. The wearable audio device of claim 11 , wherein the processing unit is configured to improve audibility of the portion of the sound by focusing the set of microphones in the direction of the at least one point of interest to receive the sounds emanating from the point of interest, while attenuating sounds in at least one unfocused direction.

13. The wearable audio device of claim 11 , wherein the transceiver is configured to:

receive information regarding a first position of the audio device; and

receive information regarding a second position of the at least one point of interest, and

wherein the processing unit is configured to detect the at least one point of interest by determining, based on the received first and second positions, that the user is in the vicinity of the at least one point of interest.

14. The wearable audio device of claim 11 , wherein the transceiver is configured to receive pre-recorded audio associated with the at least one point of interest, wherein the at least one speaker is configured to deliver the pre-recorded audio along with the improved sounds to the at least one ear of the user.

15. The wearable audio device of claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of the audio device is coupled to the head of the user and an orientation of the audio device changes with a head position of the user,

the audio device further comprising:

at least one sensor for tracking an orientation of the audio device,

wherein the processing unit sets a direction relative to the audio device for the improving audibility of the sounds based on the tracking.

16. A wearable audio device comprising:

a set of microphones for receiving sound in an environment external to the audio device;

at least one processor configured to:

detect at least one point of interest in a vicinity of a user wearing the audio device;

improve audibility, in response to the detection, of sounds received in a direction of the at least one point of interest while fading out sounds received in at least one other direction;

receive pre-recorded audio associated with the at least one point of interest; and

output the improved sounds and the pre-recorded audio for delivering by the audio device to at least one ear of the user; and

a memory coupled to the at least one processor.

17. The wearable audio device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to improve audibility of the sounds by focusing the set of microphones in the direction of the at least one point of interest to receive the sounds emanating from the point of interest, while attenuating sounds in at least one unfocused direction.

18. The wearable audio device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to detect the at least one point of interest by:

receiving information regarding a first position of the user;

receiving information regarding a second position of the at least one point of interest; and

determining, based on the received first and second positions, that the user is in the vicinity of the at least one point of interest.

19. The wearable audio device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive configuration information configuring the outputting of the pre-recorded audio and the improved sounds; and

output the pre-recorded audio and the improved sounds based on the configuration.

20. The wearable audio device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to:

receive head tracking information indicating a head position of the user, wherein at least a portion of the audio device is coupled to the head of the user and an orientation of the audio device changes with the head position of the user; and

set a direction relative to the audio device for the improving audibility of the sounds based on the received head tracking information.
