Abstract

A spacer for separating bones of a joint, the spacer includes a frame having a longitudinal axis, and ramped surfaces. An endplate configured to engage a bone of the joint has ramped surfaces mateable with the ramped surfaces of the frame. When the endplate is moved relative to the frame in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the frame, the endplate is moved in a direction away from the frame to increase the height of the spacer. A second endplate configured to engage a second bone of the joint can be similarly configured.

Claims (40)

1. A method for stabilizing adjacent vertebrae comprising:

accessing an intervertebral space between adjacent vertebrae;

positioning an implant in the intervertebral space, the implant including:

a first endplate having an upper surface configured to engage a first vertebral body;

a second endplate having a lower surface configured to engage a second vertebral body;

a body portion extending from a first end to a second end and positioned between the first and second endplates;

an articulating element slidably and rotationally coupled to the body portion through a curved dovetail connection; and

a translation member positioned within the body portion, wherein when the translation member is moved from a first position to a second position, the first and second endplate move apart from one another; and

moving the translation member from the first position of the translation member to the second position of the translation member in the intervertebral space such that the first and second endplates move away from one another

wherein the articulating element is configured to slide and rotate within a curved dovetail groove of the body portion,

wherein the articulating element includes a through hole to receive an external threaded link that is configured to engage with an actuating nut.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant is positioned in the intervertebral space posteriorly and then the implant is articulated to an anterior position prior to expansion.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant is positioned in the intervertebral space transforaminally.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intervertebral space is accessed through a minimally invasive entry.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the articulating element is configured to articulate the body portion non-linearly.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant is curved.

7. A method for stabilizing adjacent vertebrae comprising:

accessing an intervertebral space between adjacent vertebrae;

positioning an implant in the intervertebral space, the implant including:

a first endplate having an upper surface and a lower surface, the upper surface configured to engage a first vertebral body, and at least one ramped surface extending from the lower surface;

a second endplate having an upper surface and a lower surface, the lower surface configured to engage a second vertebral body, and at least one ramped surface extending from the upper surface;

a body portion extending from a first end to a second end and positioned between the first and second endplates, the body portion adapted to engage the ramped surfaces of the first and second endplates;

an articulating element slidably and rotationally coupled to the body portion through a curved dovetailed connection; and

a translation member positioned within the body portion, wherein when the translation member is moved from a first position to a second position, the first and second endplates slide against the body portion as the first and second endplates to move apart from one another;

articulating the body portion in the intervertebral space; and

moving the translation member from the first position to the second position in the intervertebral space such that the first and second endplates move away from one another as the first and second endplates slide relative to the body portion

wherein the articulating element is configured to slide and rotate within a curved dovetail groove of the body portion,

wherein the articulating element includes a through hole to receive an external threaded link that is configured to engage with an actuating nut.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the implant is positioned in the intervertebral space posteriorly and then the implant is articulated to an anterior position prior to expansion.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the implant is positioned in the intervertebral space transforaminally.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the intervertebral space is accessed through a minimally invasive entry.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the articulating element is configured to articulate the body portion non-linearly.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the implant is curved.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one ramped surface of the first endplate contacts a first ramped surface of the body portion.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one ramped surface of the second endplate contacts a second ramped surface of the body portion.

15. The method of claim 7 , wherein a projection of the translation member engages the first and second endplates.

16. The method of claim 7 , wherein the articulating element is configured to couple to an insertion instrument.

17. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first endplate, the body portion and the second endplate are each configured with through holes, the through holes being aligned from the upper surface of the first endplate to the lower surface of the second endplate.

18. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first and second endplates are slidingly engaged with the body portion.

19. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one ramped surface of the first endplate contacts a first ramped surface of the body portion and the at least one ramped surface of the second endplate contacts a ramped surface of the body portion.
