Abstract

Surgical instruments and/or fastener apparatuses comprising an end effector with a pair of jaws pivoted at a proximal end thereof and movable between an open and closed position. At least one of the jaws may comprise a channel for receiving a cartridge containing a plurality of surgical fasteners. Also, an electrically powered actuator may be for deploying the surgical fasteners and may comprise a power source and a motor. An activation mechanism may be attached to the handle to move the pair of jaws from the open to the closed position and to activate the actuator. A lockout mechanism may be configured to permit current to flow from the power source to the motor when the pair of jaws is in the closed position and to prevent current from flowing to the power source to the motor when the pair of jaws is in the open position.

Claims (61)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw, wherein the end effector is movable from an open position towards a clamped position for clamping patient tissue, and wherein one of the first jaw and the second jaw is configured to removably receive a staple cartridge comprising ejectable staples;

a firing bar movable when a firing motion is applied thereto to cause ejection of the staples from the staple cartridge;

a motor to generate the firing motion;

a sensor to detect a clamping force applied to the patient tissue by the end effector; and

a control circuit in communication with the sensor and the motor, wherein the control circuit is to:

determine that the clamping force is greater than a predetermined force threshold;

initiate a timer based on determining that the clamping force is greater than the predetermined force threshold; and

prevent the motor from generating the firing motion before the timer satisfies a predetermined time threshold.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is to cause the motor to generate the firing motion based on the timer satisfying the predetermined time threshold.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined time threshold is based on a delay for stabilizing the patient tissue.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising a display in communication with the control circuit, wherein the control circuit is to cause the display to indicate that the motor is being prevented from generating the firing motion before the timer satisfies the predetermined firing threshold.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein the display comprises a light emitting diode (LED) display.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is to:

determine that the clamping force is less than the predetermined force threshold; and

prevent the motor from generating the firing motion based on determining that the clamping force is less than the predetermined force threshold.

7. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is to:

determine that the end effector is not in a fully clamped position; and

prevent the motor from generating the firing motion based on determining that the end effector is not in a fully clamped position.

8. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a first sensor, wherein the surgical stapling system further comprises a second sensor to detect whether the staple cartridge is in a ready-to-fire configuration, and wherein the control circuit is to:

determine that the staple cartridge is not in a ready-to-fire configuration; and

prevent the motor from generating the firing motion based on determining that the staple cartridge is not in a ready-to-fire configuration.

9. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein the second sensor is to detect whether the staple cartridge is in the ready-to-fire configuration based on sensing whether the staple cartridge is received by one of the first jaw and the second jaw.

10. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein the second sensor is to detect whether the staple cartridge is in a ready-to-fire configuration based on detecting whether the staple cartridge is an unspent staple cartridge.

11. The surgical stapling system of claim 10 , wherein the staple cartridge comprises a sled movable by the firing bar to eject the staples, and wherein the second sensor is to detect the staple cartridge is an unspent staple cartridge based on sensing a position of the sled.

12. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw, wherein the end effector is movable from an open position towards a clamped position for clamping patient tissue, and wherein one of the first jaw and the second jaw is configured to removably receive a staple cartridge comprising ejectable staples;

a firing bar movable when a firing motion is applied thereto to cause ejection of the staples from the staple cartridge;

a motor to generate the firing motion;

a sensor to detect a clamping force applied to the patient tissue by the end effector; and

a control circuit in communication with the sensor and the motor, wherein the control circuit is to:

determine that the clamping force is greater than a predetermined force threshold;

initiate a timer based on determining that the clamping force is greater than the predetermined force threshold; and

cause the motor to generate the firing motion based on the timer satisfying a predetermined time threshold.

13. The surgical stapling system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined time threshold is based on a delay for stabilizing the patient tissue.

14. The surgical stapling system of claim 12 , further comprising a display in communication with the control circuit, wherein the control circuit is to cause the display to indicate that the motor is being prevented from generating the firing motion before the timer satisfies the predetermined firing threshold.
