Abstract

A stapling assembly comprising a shaft, a first iaw, a second iaw, a detachable cartridge portion, a firing member, a motor-driven firing system, and a lockout is disclosed. The firing member comprises a first cam configured to engage the first jaw and a second cam configured to engage the second jaw when the firing member is advanced from an initial position. The first iaw comprises a clearanced opening configured to receive the first cam when the firing member is in the initial position such that the first cam is not engaged with the first jaw when the firing member is in the initial position. The motor-driven firing system is configured to advance the firing member toward a distal end of the stapling assembly. The lockout is configured to block the advancement of the firing member when the detachable cartridge portion is not attached to the stapling assembly.

Claims (18)

1. A stapling assembly, comprising:

a frame;

a distal end;

a first jaw comprising a channel;

a channel retainer, wherein said channel is slidably attachable to said channel retainer;

a second jaw extending from said frame;

a plurality of staples;

a staple firing member comprising a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw when said staple firing member is advanced from an unadvanced position toward said distal end, wherein said first cam and said second cam are configured to co-operatively hold said first jaw and said second jaw relative to one another when said staple firing member is advanced toward said distal end, and wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw comprises a clearanced opening configured to receive one of said first cam and said second cam such that said first jaw is not held to said second jaw when said staple firing member is in said unadvanced position;

a motor-driven firing system configured to advance said staple firing member toward a distal end of said stapling assembly, wherein said motor-driven firing system is configured to convert a rotary input into translation of said staple firing member; and

a lockout configured to block the advancement of said staple firing member when said channel is not attached to said channel retainer, wherein said lockout does not comprise a biasing spring integral with said detachable cartridge portion.

2. A stapling assembly, comprising:

an elongate shaft;

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a detachable cartridge portion comprising a plurality of staples;

a staple firing member comprising a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw when said staple firing member is advanced from an initial position, and wherein said first jaw comprises a clearanced opening configured to receive said first cam when said staple firing member is in said initial position such that said first cam is not engaged with said first jaw when said staple firing member is in said initial position;

a motor-driven firing system configured to advance said staple firing member toward a distal end of said stapling assembly, wherein said motor-driven firing system is configured to convert a rotary input into translation of said staple firing member; and

a lockout configured to block the advancement of said staple firing member when said detachable cartridge portion is not attached to said stapling assembly, wherein said lockout does not comprise a biasing spring integral with said detachable cartridge portion.
