Systems and methods for improving fitness equipment and exercise
The present invention provides systems for and methods of playing a video game that includes providing a game character having a virtual appearance characteristic, receiving an input signal indicative of a user exercise performance level, and altering the virtual appearance characteristic in response to receiving the input signal. Numerous other aspects are disclosed.
1. A system for exercise competition, comprising:
a first mobile device and a second mobile device;
wherein the first mobile device has a memory and a display, the memory including computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to:
communicate with one or more other mobile devices to form a group of exercisers that share a number of steps taken by each exerciser throughout a day with other exercisers in the group by wirelessly exchanging information between the first mobile device and the one or more other mobile devices;
track a number of steps taken by a first exerciser of the group using the first mobile device; and
communicate from the first mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser to the second mobile device of a second exerciser of the group by wirelessly exchanging information between the first mobile device and the second mobile device;
wherein the second mobile device has a memory and a display, the memory including computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to:
wirelessly receive step information transmitted from the first mobile device;
generate pixel data that includes an indication of the number of steps taken by the first exerciser based on the received step information, including altering the pixel data based on changes in the received step information such that the pixel data is correlated with step information from the first mobile device;
display the indication of the number of steps taken by the first exerciser on the second mobile device by displaying the pixel data on the display of the second mobile device;
track a number of steps taken by the second exerciser using the second mobile device; and
communicate from the second mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser to the first mobile device by wirelessly exchanging information between the first mobile device and the second mobile device; and
wherein the memory of the first mobile device further includes computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to:
wirelessly receive step information transmitted from the second mobile device;
generate pixel data that includes an indication of the number of steps taken by the second exerciser based on the received step information, including altering the pixel data based on changes in the received step information such that the pixel data is correlated with step information from the second mobile device;
display the indication of the number of steps taken by the second exerciser on the first mobile device by displaying the pixel data on the display of the first mobile device.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first mobile device and the second mobile device is a cellular telephone.
3. The system of claim 1 wherein the group of exercisers comprises at least four exercisers.
4. The system of claim 2 wherein the group of exercisers 5 . comprises more than four exercisers.
5. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first mobile device and the second mobile device is a wrist watch.
6. The system of claim 1 wherein step information is shared between group members in real time.
7. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to convert number of steps taken by the first exerciser to a distance traveled; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to convert number of steps taken by the second exerciser to a distance traveled.
8. The system of claim 1 wherein the second mobile device is configured to generate and display pixel data representative of a map to the second exerciser showing a distance traveled by the first exerciser and the first mobile device is configured to generate and display pixel data representative of a map to the first exerciser showing a distance traveled by the second exerciser.
9. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to communicate exercise performance level information of the first exerciser to the second exerciser; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to communicate exercise performance level information of the second exerciser to the first exerciser.
10. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to display pixel data of an avatar representation of the first exerciser on the second mobile device; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to display pixel data of an avatar representation of the second exerciser on the first mobile device.
11. The system of claim 10 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to modify the pixel data of the avatar representation of the first exerciser on the second mobile device based on exercise of the first exerciser; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to modify the pixel data of the avatar representation of the second exerciser on the first mobile device based on exercise of the second exerciser.
12. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second mobile devices are configured to communicate with each other via a network.
13. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second mobile devices are configured to communicate with each other via a server.
14. The system of claim 1 further comprising a server configured to:
facilitate formation of the group of exercisers that share information regarding number of steps taken by each exerciser throughout a day with other exercisers in the group;
communicate with the first mobile device of the first exerciser configured to track the number of steps taken by the first exerciser of the group;
receive from the first mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser;
communicate information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser to the second mobile device of the second exerciser of the group for display on the second mobile device;
receive from the second mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser; and
communicate information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser to the first mobile device for display on the first mobile device.
15. A system for exercise competition, comprising:
computer program instructions executable on a first mobile device having a memory and a display, that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to:
communicate with one or more other mobile devices to form a group of exercisers that share a number of steps taken by each exerciser throughout a day with other exercisers in the group;
track a number of steps taken by a first exerciser of the group using the first mobile device; and
communicate from the first mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser to a second mobile device, having a memory and a display, of a second exerciser of the group;
computer program instructions executable on the second mobile device that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to:
wirelessly receive step information transmitted from the first mobile device;
generate pixel data that includes an indication of the number of steps taken by the first exerciser based on the received step information, including altering the pixel data based on changes in the received step information such that the pixel data is correlated with step information from the first mobile device;
display information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser on the second mobile device by displaying the pixel data on the display of the first mobile device;
track a number of steps taken by the second exerciser using the second mobile device; and
communicate from the second mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser to the first mobile device;
wherein the computer program instructions executable on the first mobile device, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to:
wirelessly receive step information transmitted from the second mobile device;
generate pixel data that includes an indication of the number of steps taken by the second exerciser based on the received step information, including altering the pixel data based on changes in the received step information such that the pixel data is correlated with step information from the second mobile device;
display information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser on the first mobile device by displaying the pixel data on the display of the first mobile device; and
a server configured to:
facilitate formation of the group of exercisers that share information regarding number of steps taken by each exerciser throughout a day with other exercisers in the group;
communicate with the first mobile device of the first exerciser configured to track the number of steps taken by the first exerciser of the group;
receive from the first mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser;
communicate information regarding the number of steps taken by the first exerciser to the second mobile device of the second exerciser of the group for display on the second mobile device;
receive from the second mobile device information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser; and
communicate information regarding the number of steps taken by the second exerciser to the first mobile device for display on the first mobile device.
16. The system of claim 15 wherein at least one of the first mobile device and the second mobile device is a cellular telephone.
17. The system of claim 15 wherein the group of exercisers comprises at least four exercisers.
18. The system of claim 15 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to convert number of steps taken by the first exerciser to a distance traveled; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to convert number of steps taken by the second exerciser to a distance traveled.
19. The system of claim 15 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to generate and display pixel data representative of a map showing a distance traveled by the first exerciser; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to generate and display pixel data representative of a map showing a distance traveled by the second exerciser.
20. The system of claim 15 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to communicate exercise performance level information of the first exerciser to the second exerciser; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to communicate exercise performance level information of the second exerciser to the first exerciser.
21. The system of claim 15 further comprising:
computer program instructions that, when executed by the second mobile device, cause the second mobile device to display pixel data of an avatar representation of the first exerciser on the second mobile device; and
computer program instructions that, when executed by the first mobile device, cause the first mobile device to display pixel data of an avatar representation of the second exerciser on the first mobile device.
