Abstract

Active control of LEDs, LED packages, and related LED displays by way of pulse wide modulation (PWM) is disclosed. Effective PWM frequencies for LEDs are increased by segmenting duty cycles in which LEDs are electrically activated within individual PWM periods. Segmented duty cycles may be provided by transforming or re-ordering a sequence in which control signals are provided to LEDs. As such, LEDs may be electrically activated and deactivated multiple times within each PWM period. Active electrical elements that are incorporated into one or more LED packages of an LED display may be capable of segmenting the duty cycle within each LED package. Active electrical elements may also be capable of receiving reset signals from a data stream to either initiate a reset action or pass the reset signals along to other active electrical elements of a display.

Claims (19)

1. A display, comprising:

a control element configured to provide a serial communication signal; and

a plurality of light-emitting diode (LED) packages arranged to receive the serial communication signal from the control element, each LED package of the plurality of LED packages comprising:

at least one LED;

an LED driver electrically coupled with the at least one LED; and

an active electrical element electrically connected to the at least one LED, the active electrical element configured to receive a reset signal that comprises at least one pulse of the serial communication signal, and the reset signal is embedded in the serial communication signal with brightness level data or color select data received by the active electrical element at a common input port of the active electrical element, wherein the active electrical element comprises an input/output buffer electrically coupled between the common input port and the LED driver;

wherein the reset signal is configured to initiate a reset action that restarts the active electrical element of a first LED package of the plurality of LED packages from an error state.

2. The display of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pulse comprises holding a line state of the serial communication signal at a high state for a time interval that is longer than other pulses of the serial communication signal.

3. The display of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pulse comprises holding a line state of the serial communication signal at a low state for a time interval that is longer than other pulses of the serial communication signal.

4. The display of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pulse comprises a plurality of pulses of the serial communication signal.

5. The display of claim 1 , wherein the active electrical element of the first LED package of the plurality of LED packages is configured to initiate the reset action upon receiving the reset signal.

6. The display of claim 1 , wherein the active electrical element of the first LED package of the plurality of LED packages is configured to pass the reset signal to a second LED package of the plurality of LED packages without initiating the reset action in the first LED package of the plurality of LED packages.

7. The display of claim 1 , wherein the reset signal is configured to initiate the reset action for each LED package of the plurality of LED packages.

8. The display of claim 1 , wherein the active electrical element is further configured to:

provide a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal to the at least one LED that comprises a PWM period and a PWM duty cycle, the PWM duty cycle corresponding to a portion of the PWM period in which the at least one LED is electrically activated; and

segment the PWM duty cycle such that the at least one LED is electrically activated and electrically deactivated a plurality of times within the PWM period.

9. The display of claim 8 , wherein the active electrical element is further configured to receive an input for selecting between a numerically ordered counter sequence and a non-numerically ordered counter sequence for each PWM period.

10. The display of claim 9 , wherein the non-numerically ordered counter sequence is a segmented duty cycle, the numerically ordered counter sequence is a continuous duty cycle, and the active electrical element is configured to toggle between the segmented duty cycle and the continuous duty cycle.

11. The display of claim 9 , wherein the non-numerically ordered counter sequence is formed by partial bit reversal.
