Abstract

A light source includes a first LED to provide light of a first light wavelength spectrum along a first light path; a second LED to provide light of a second light wavelength spectrum along a second light path; a dichroic filter for passing light emitted from at least one of the first LED and the second LED and reflecting light emitted from at least one of the first LED and the second LED; an optical filter movable between a first position in which the optical filter receives light from the first light path and a second position of which the optical filter does not receive light from the first light path; a light output; a controller which is capable of switching the light source between a first mode for providing a first light to the light output and a second mode for providing a second light to the light output.

Claims (38)

1 . A medical light source comprising:

a first light comprising an LED that emits light in a visible wavelength spectrum; and

a second light comprising a first light emitter that emits light having a first infrared spectrum and a second light emitter that emits light having a second infrared spectrum that is different than the first infrared spectrum.

2 . The medical light source of claim 1 , further comprising a heat sink, the heat sink engaging the second light and configured to remove heat from both the first light emitter and the second light emitter.

3 . The medical light source of claim 1 , further comprising an infrared sensor for detecting infrared light.

4 . The medical light source of claim 3 , wherein the infrared sensor is configured to provide a signal to a control circuit in response to detecting infrared light, wherein the control circuit is configured to control an intensity of light emitted from the second light.

5 . The medical light source of claim 1 , further comprising a light guide configured to provide light from the first light and the second light to an endoscope.

6 . The medical light source of claim 1 , further comprising at least one dichroic filter for combining light from the first light and light from the second light.

7 . The medical light source of claim 1 , further comprising an optical prism configured to redirect light emitted by the first light emitter and the second light emitter.

8 . The medical light source of claim 1 , wherein the first light emitter emits light in a first direction and the second light emitter emits light in a second direction that is different from the first direction.

9 . The medical light source of claim 1 , wherein the second light comprises more than two light emitters.

10 . The medical light source of claim 9 , wherein the more than two light emitters are arranged in a stack.

11 . The medical light source of claim 1 , wherein the first infrared spectrum comprises 808 nm light.

12 . The medical light source of claim 11 , wherein the second infrared spectrum comprises 780 nm light.

13 . The medical light source of claim 1 , further comprising a third light comprising an LED capable of emitting light in an ultraviolet wavelength spectrum.

14 . The medical light source of claim 1 , wherein the first and second light emitters comprise laser diodes.

15 . The medical light source of claim 1 , wherein the medical light source is configured to be coupled to a camera control unit of an endoscopic camera.

16 . The medical light source of claim 1 , wherein the medical light source is configured to be connected to an external power supply.

17 . A method for generating light from a medical light source, the method comprising:

emitting light in a visible wavelength spectrum from a first light of the medical light source;

emitting light having a first infrared spectrum from a first light emitter of a second light of the medical light source; and

emitting light having a second infrared spectrum that is different than the first infrared spectrum from a second light emitter of the second light, wherein the light having the second infrared spectrum is emitted at a different time than the light having the first infrared spectrum.

18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising removing heat from both the first light emitter and the second light emitter by a heat sink that engages the second light.

19 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising detecting infrared light by an infrared sensor.

20 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

in response to detecting infrared light by the infrared sensor, transmitting a signal from the infrared sensor to a control circuit; and

controlling an intensity of light emitted from the second light via the control circuit based on the signal.

21 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising transmitting light from the first light and the second light through a light guide to an endoscope.

22 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising combining light from the first light and light from the second light via at least one dichroic filter of the medical light source.

23 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising redirecting light emitted by the first light emitter and the second light emitter via an optical prism of the medical light source.

24 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the first light emitter emits light in a first direction and the second light emitter emits light in a second direction that is different from the first direction.

25 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the second light comprises more than two light emitters.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the more than two light emitters are arranged in a stack.

27 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the first infrared spectrum comprises 808 nm light.

28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the second infrared spectrum comprises 780 nm light.

29 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising emitting light in an ultraviolet wavelength spectrum from a third light of the medical light source.

30 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the medical light source is configured to be coupled to a camera control unit of an endoscopic camera.

31 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the medical light source is configured to be connected to an external power supply.
