Abstract

An electronic device may include a glass housing member that includes an upper portion defining a display area, a lower portion defining an input area, and a transition portion joining the upper portion and the lower portion and defining a continuous, curved surface between the upper portion and the lower portion. The electronic device may include a display coupled to the glass housing member and configured to provide a visual output at the display area. The electronic device may include an input device coupled to the glass housing member and configured to detect inputs at the input area. The electronic device may include a support structure coupled to the glass housing member and configured to support the computing device.

Claims (65)

1 . An electronic device comprising:

a glass housing member comprising:

a first glass sheet defining a front exterior surface of the glass housing member; and

a second glass sheet defining a rear exterior surface of the glass housing member, the first and second glass sheets defining:

an upper portion of the glass housing member;

a lower portion of the glass housing member; and

a transition portion of the glass housing member extending between the upper portion and the lower portion;

a first display positioned between the first glass sheet and the second glass sheet and configured to provide a first graphical output at the front exterior surface; and

a second display positioned between the first glass sheet and the second glass sheet and configured to provide a second graphical output at the rear exterior surface.

2 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first and second displays are positioned at the upper portion of the glass housing member;

the electronic device further comprises an input device; and

the input device is positioned at the lower portion of the glass housing member.

3 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the first display extends at least partially into the transition portion of the glass housing member.

4 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the upper portion defines a first planar region of the glass housing member;

the lower portion defines a second planar region of the glass housing member; and

the transition portion defines a curved region of the glass housing member.

5 . The electronic device of claim 4 , wherein the first display extends along the upper portion, the transition portion, and the lower portion.

6 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the first display and the second display share a common light source.

7 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first display comprises a first touch-sensitive display that detects user inputs to the front exterior surface of the glass housing member; and

the second display comprises a second touch-sensitive display that detects user inputs to the rear exterior surface of the glass housing member.

8 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the transition portion is configured to bend in response to the lower portion being articulated between a first angular position relative to the upper portion and a second angular position relative to the upper portion.

9 . An electronic device comprising:

a glass housing member comprising:

a first glass sheet comprising a first portion defining a first display area; and

a second glass sheet comprising a second portion defining a second display area;

a first display positioned between the first glass sheet and the second glass sheet and configured to provide a first graphical output at a front exterior surface; and

a second display positioned between the first glass sheet and the second glass sheet and configured to provide a second graphical output at a rear exterior surface.

10 . The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein:

the glass housing member is configured to transition between a first configuration and a second configuration;

in the first configuration the glass housing member defines a substantially planar profile; and

in the second configuration the glass housing member defines a curved profile.

11 . The electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the electronic device further comprises a curvature control mechanism that is coupled to the glass housing member.

12 . The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the curvature control mechanism defines a maximum amount of curvature for the curved profile.

13 . The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the curvature control mechanism causes the curved profile to define a constant curvature along a width of the glass housing member, along a length of the glass housing member, or both.

14 . The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the curvature control mechanism causes the curved profile to define a varying curvature along a width of the glass housing member, along a length of the glass housing member, or both.

15 . The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein:

the first glass sheet defines:

a planar upper portion;

a planar lower portion; and

a curved transition portion;

the first display and the second display are positioned at the planar upper portion;

the planar lower portion defines an input area; and

the curved transition portion extends between the planar upper portion and the planar lower portion.

16 . An electronic device comprising:

a housing member comprising:

an upper portion defining a first region of a continuous exterior surface of the electronic device;

a lower portion defining a second region of the continuous exterior surface of the electronic device; and

a transition portion extending between the upper portion and the lower portion and defining a third region of the continuous exterior surface of the electronic device, the transition portion configured to bend in response to the lower portion being articulated between a first angular position relative to the upper portion and a second angular position relative to the upper portion;

a first display coupled to the housing member and configured to provide a graphical output at a first display area on a first side of the upper portion; and

a second display coupled to the housing member and configured to provide a graphical output at a second display area on a second side of the upper portion.

17 . The electronic device of claim 16 , further comprising an input device coupled to the housing member and configured to detect an input at the input device positioned at the lower portion of the housing member.

18 . The electronic device of claim 16 , wherein:

in the first angular position, the first region, the second region, and the third region of the continuous exterior surface are coplanar; and

in the second angular position, the first region, the second region, and the third region of the continuous exterior surface are not coplanar.

19 . The electronic device of claim 18 , wherein:

in the second angular position:

the lower portion is substantially parallel to a support surface; and

the upper portion is positioned at a non-parallel orientation with respect to the support surface.

20 . The electronic device of claim 19 , wherein:

the upper portion comprises a glass material;

the lower portion comprises a glass material; and

the first display area extends from the upper portion, through the transition portion, to the lower portion.
