Abstract

An infant calming/sleep-aid/SIDS detection device is provided that includes a main moving platform that moves in a variable manner with accompanying variable sound generation, the sound and motion adapted to calm a fussy baby, induce sleep, and maintain sleep under normal conditions. The device may also have a sensor for detection of pauses in breathing and/or detection of resultant biological changes related to breathing pauses and respond with appropriate stimuli to arouse the baby and allow breathing to recommence.

Claims (18)

1 . An infant calming/sleep system, the system comprising:

a base;

a platform positioned above the base, the platform comprising a surface and configured to support a full length of an infant therealong;

a rotation bearing or linkage coupled between the base and the platform; and

an actuation assembly comprising a motor mounted to the base, at least first and second actuator assembly members arranged to receive output of the motor and couple the output to the platform to drive a back-and-forth rotational motion of the platform in sequential clockwise and counterclockwise directions within a horizontal plane about a fixed axis of rotation on the rotation bearing or linkage,

wherein the first and second actuator assembly members are pivotably coupled and the second actuator assembly member is directly or indirectly coupled to the platform,

wherein, in operation, the output of the motor moves the first actuator assembly member and the movement of the first actuator assembly member moves the second actuator assembly member, and

wherein the back-and-forth rotational motion of the platform driven by the actuation assembly is configured to calm the infant when supported on the surface of the platform.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the back-and-forth rotational motion of the platform has a frequency of between 0.5 Hz and 1.5 Hz.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the back-and-forth rotational motion of the platform has an amplitude, taken at a location along the head portion of the surface corresponding to a center of a head of the infant when supported on the platform, between 0.5 inches to 2.5 inches.

4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the audio generation module includes a library of soothing audio tracks that may be selected to be output by the one or more speakers.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the back-and-forth rotational motion of the platform has a frequency of between 2 Hz and 4.5 Hz.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the back-and-forth rotational motion of the platform has an amplitude, taken at a location along the head portion of the surface corresponding to a center of a head of the infant when supported on the platform, of no more than 1 inch.

7 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising an audio generation module configured to receive a signal of a desired audio track and, in response to the signal, cause one or more speakers to output the desired audio track proximate to the infant.

8 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a motion generation module operable to set motor commands that control the output of the motor, wherein the motion generation module is configured to receive a signal corresponding to a desired motion state and, in response to the signal, set motor commands corresponding to the desired motion state.

9 . The system of claim 8 , and wherein the motion generation module is operable to set motor commands corresponding to a plurality of motion states, each motion state having associated frequency and amplitude of the sequential clockwise and counterclockwise rotational motion of the platform.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the fixed axis of rotation intersects the infant when supported on the surface of the platform.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the second actuator assembly member or a third actuator assembly member coupled to the second actuator assembly member connects to the platform at bracket fixed relative to the platform.
