Abstract

Described is a method of mitigating and/or preventing the onset of a pressure ulcer at an area of risk of developing a pressure ulcer, which includes the step of: a) applying a medical dressing to intact skin of a subject at the area of risk of developing the pressure ulcer, thereby mitigating and/or preventing the onset of the pressure ulcer, wherein the medical dressing has a gel pad arranged between a backing layer and an adhesive body contact layer, wherein a gel of the gel pad has a compressive strength of from 5 to 60 kPa at a strain of 50%, as measured according to a compression test.

Claims (15)

1 . A method of performing a blanching test comprising the steps of:

a) providing a medical dressing on skin of a subject,

wherein the medical dressing comprises a gel pad arranged between a backing layer and an adhesive body contact layer,

wherein a gel of the gel pad has a compressive strength of from 5 to 60 kPa at a strain of 50%, as measured according to a compression test,

wherein the gel pad, the backing layer, and the adhesive body contact layer are transparent,

b) performing the blanching test through the medical dressing of an area of the skin of the subject covered by the gel pad, the backing layer, and the adhesive body contact layer.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the area of the skin is an area of intact skin.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the area of the skin in an area of risk of developing a pressure ulcer.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is bedridden.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the area of risk of developing the pressure ulcer is a bony prominence area.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the area of risk of developing the pressure ulcer is a sacrum area, coccyx area, a heel area, a hip area, or an ankle area.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive body contact layer comprises the skin-facing surface of the first side, wherein the adhesive body contact layer comprises a silicone based adhesive.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the gel of the gel pad has a compressive strength from 1 to 14 kPa at a strain of 25%, as measured according to the compression test.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the gel pad has an opacity of less than 25% as measured by a opacity test.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least the backing layer extends beyond the periphery of the gel pad to define a border portion around a contour of the pad.
