Abstract

An exoskeleton comprising a plurality of support structures, and a plurality of joint mechanisms each joint mechanism rotatably coupling at least two of the plurality of support structures. A sensor discrepancy detection system can be operable to compare sensor output data from a user operated force moment sensor and at least one torque sensor of a joint mechanism. A controller can be configured to recruit at least one substitute sensor from a first sensor group of based on an identified discrepancy between the sensor output data and to execute a remedial measure associated with a safety mode of the exoskeleton for safe operation of the exoskeleton.

Claims (80)

1 . An exoskeleton, comprising:

a joint mechanism;

at least one actuator configured to actuate the joint mechanism;

a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors configured to generate sensor output data, the sensor group associated with the joint mechanism;

at least one torque sensor associated with the joint mechanism and configured to generate sensor output data associated with the at least one joint mechanism and corresponding to a known load;

a force moment sensor carried by the exoskeleton and associated with a support structure in contact with a human element of a user operating the exoskeleton, the force moment sensor being configured to generate sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor;

a target sensor of the sensor group defined by at least one of the force moment sensor or the torque sensor;

at least one auxiliary sensor of the sensor group, the at least one auxiliary sensor and the target sensor positioned at different locations; and

a controller configured to receive the sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor and transmit a command signal to the at least one actuator,

wherein the controller is configured to execute a remedial measure associated with a safety mode of the exoskeleton based on an identified discrepancy between the sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor and a known load applied to the joint mechanism, and

wherein the controller is configured to recruit the at least one auxiliary sensor and execute the remedial measure based on transformed sensor output data associated with the at least one torque sensor as the auxiliary sensor.

2 . The exoskeleton as in claim 1 , wherein the known load is an external weight applied to an end effector associated with the joint mechanism.

3 . The exoskeleton as in claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to transform the sensor output data of the at least one of the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor in accordance with a gain ratio between the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor.

4 . The exoskeleton as in claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors configured to generate sensor output data, the sensor group associated with the joint mechanism;

at least one auxiliary sensor of the sensor group, the at least one auxiliary sensor positioned at a different location than at least one of the force moment sensor or the torque sensor; and

the controller configured to recruit the at least one auxiliary sensor based on the identified discrepancy to execute the remedial measure associated with the safety mode of the exoskeleton.

5 . The exoskeleton as in claim 1 , wherein the joint mechanism comprises at least one of a brake or a clutch device, and wherein the controller is configured to transmit a command signal to the brake or clutch device for operating the brake or clutch device to execute the remedial measure.

The exoskeleton as in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of joint mechanisms, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of an actuator of each of at least some of the joint mechanisms, independent of user control, to execute the remedial measure associated with the safety mode or a fail-safe mode of the exoskeleton.

The exoskeleton as in claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of joint mechanisms, and a suite of sensors comprising a plurality of sensor groups, wherein each sensor group is associated with a respective joint mechanism of the plurality of joint mechanisms, and wherein each sensor group comprises a respective plurality of sensors that complement one another.

8 . An exoskeleton, comprising:

a joint mechanism;

at least one actuator configured to actuate the joint mechanism;

at least one torque sensor associated with the joint mechanism and configured to generate sensor output data associated with the at least one joint mechanism;

a force moment sensor carried by the exoskeleton and associated with a support structure in contact with a human element of a user operating the exoskeleton, the force moment sensor being configured to generate sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor; and

a controller configured to receive the sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor and transmit a command signal to the at least one actuator,

the controller configured to execute a remedial measure associated with a safety mode of the exoskeleton based on an identified discrepancy between the sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor and transformed sensor output data associated with the at least one torque sensor,

wherein the controller, as part of a sensor suite discrepancy detection system, is configured to:

receive sensor output data generated by the at least one torque sensor and the force moment sensor;

transform the sensor output data of the at least one torque sensor into the transformed sensor output data that corresponds to the sensor output data of the force moment sensor;

compare the sensor output data of the force moment sensor with the transformed sensor output data of the at least one torque sensor;

determine, based on the comparison, whether a discrepancy exists between the sensor output data of the force moment sensor and the transformed sensor output data of the at least one torque sensor;

recruit, as a substitute for the force moment sensor or the at least one torque sensor, at least one auxiliary sensor;

generate a command signal associated with sensor output data from the at least one recruited auxiliary sensor; and

transmit the command signal to execute a remedial measure associated with the safety mode of the exoskeleton.

9 . The exoskeleton as in claim 8 , wherein the controller is configured to transform the sensor output data of at least one of the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor in accordance with a gain ratio between the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor.

10 . The exoskeleton as in claim 8 , further comprising:

a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors configured to generate sensor output data, the sensor group associated with the joint mechanism;

at least one auxiliary sensor of the sensor group, the at least one auxiliary sensor positioned at a different location than at least one of the force moment sensor or the torque sensor; and

the controller configured to recruit the at least one auxiliary sensor based on the identified discrepancy to execute the remedial measure associated with the safety mode of the exoskeleton.

11 . The exoskeleton as in claim 8 , wherein the joint mechanism comprises at least one of a brake or a clutch device, and wherein the controller is configured to transmit a command signal to the brake or clutch device for operating the brake or clutch device to execute the remedial measure.

The exoskeleton as in claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of joint mechanisms, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of an actuator of each of at least some of the joint mechanisms, independent of user control, to execute the remedial measure associated with the safety mode or a fail-safe mode of the exoskeleton.

The exoskeleton as in claim 8 , further comprising a plurality of joint mechanisms, and a suite of sensors comprising a plurality of sensor groups, wherein each sensor group is associated with a respective joint mechanism of the plurality of joint mechanisms, and wherein each sensor group comprises a respective plurality of sensors that complement one another.

14 . The exoskeleton as in claim 8 , further comprising:

a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors configured to generate sensor output data, the sensor group associated with the joint mechanism;

a target sensor of the sensor group defined by at least one of the force moment sensor or the torque sensor,

wherein the at least one auxiliary sensor and the target sensor positioned at different locations.

15 . An exoskeleton, comprising:

a joint mechanism;

at least one actuator configured to actuate the joint mechanism;

at least one torque sensor associated with the joint mechanism and configured to generate sensor output data associated with the joint mechanism;

a contact displacement system comprising a force moment sensor associated with the joint mechanism, and coupled to a support structure adjacent the joint mechanism and positioned to be in contact with a human element of a user operating the exoskeleton, and configured to sense movement of the user and transmit output signals;

a controller configured to receive the output signals from the force moment sensor and transmit a command signal to the at least one actuator of the joint mechanism configured to effectuate position motion and applied force of the joint mechanism; and

a sensor suite discrepancy detection system configured to execute a remedial measure associated with a safety mode of the exoskeleton based on an identified discrepancy between the output data associated with the force moment sensor and transformed sensor output data associated with the at least one torque sensor, the controller transforming the sensor output data with a gain ratio between the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor.

16 . The exoskeleton as in claim 15 , further comprising:

a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors configured to generate sensor output data, the sensor group associated with the joint mechanism;

a target sensor of the sensor group defined by at least one of the force moment sensor or the torque sensor;

at least one auxiliary sensor of the sensor group, the at least one auxiliary sensor and the target sensor positioned at different locations; and

the controller configured to recruit the at least one auxiliary sensor based on the identified discrepancy to execute the remedial measure associated with the safety mode of the exoskeleton.

17 . A method for safe operation of an exoskeleton, the method comprising:

operating the exoskeleton in a normal operation mode, the exoskeleton comprising a torque sensor configured to generate sensor output data pertaining to an applied load on the exoskeleton;

operating a contact displacement system comprising a force moment sensor associated with the joint mechanism, and coupled to a support structure adjacent the joint mechanism and positioned to be in contact with a human element of a user operating the exoskeleton, the force moment sensor being configured to sense movement of the user and transmit output signals;

operating a sensor suite discrepancy detection system of the exoskeleton to identified discrepancy between the output data associated with the force moment sensor and transformed sensor output data associated with the torque sensor; and

operating the exoskeleton in a safe operating mode as switched by the controller from the normal operating mode.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the exoskeleton comprising a suite of sensors configured to generate sensor output data pertaining to at least one operational function of the exoskeleton; the method further comprising:

facilitating recruitment of, through continued use of the exoskeleton and through use of a controller of the sensor suite discrepancy detection system, at least one auxiliary sensor as a substitute for at least one of the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor; and

operating the exoskeleton in a safe operating mode as switched by the controller from the normal operating mode, wherein the one or more recruited auxiliary sensors operate as a substitute for the at least one of the force moment sensor and the at least one torque sensor.

The method of claim 17 , wherein the exoskeleton comprises a suite of sensors configured to generate sensor output data pertaining to at least one operational function of the exoskeleton; wherein the sensor suite discrepancy detection system comprises a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors of the suite of sensors, the sensor group associated with a joint mechanism of the exoskeleton, the sensor group comprising a target sensor and a plurality of auxiliary sensors that complement each other; the method further comprising:

facilitating recruitment of, through continued use of the exoskeleton and through use of a controller of the sensor suite discrepancy detection system, at least one auxiliary sensor as a substitute for the target sensor based on an identified discrepancy between sensor output data of the target sensor and transformed sensor output data of at least one auxiliary sensor of the plurality of auxiliary sensors; and

operating the exoskeleton in a safe operating mode as switched by the controller from the normal operating mode, wherein the one or more recruited auxiliary sensors operate as a substitute for the target sensor.

20 . An exoskeleton, comprising:

a joint mechanism;

at least one actuator configured to actuate the joint mechanism;

a sensor group comprising a plurality of sensors configured to generate sensor output data, the sensor group associated with the joint mechanism;

at least one torque sensor associated with the joint mechanism and configured to generate sensor output data associated with the at least one joint mechanism;

a force moment sensor carried by the exoskeleton and associated with a support structure in contact with a human element of a user operating the exoskeleton, the force moment sensor being configured to generate sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor;

a target sensor of the sensor group defined by at least one of the force moment sensor or the torque sensor;

at least one auxiliary sensor of the sensor group, the at least one auxiliary sensor and the target sensor positioned at different locations;

a controller configured to receive the sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor and transmit a command signal to the at least one actuator; and

the controller configured to recruit and at least one auxiliary sensor and execute a remedial measure associated with a safety mode of the exoskeleton based on an identified discrepancy between the sensor output data associated with the force moment sensor and transformed sensor output data associated with the at least one torque sensor.
