Abstract

A system for conveying information includes a signal transport device. The signal transport device includes a set of links operable to convey a first set of information signals from a first computer module to a second computer module and a link operable to convey a transaction request credit signal associated with the first set of information signals, the signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message may be sent using the first set of information signals. The device also includes a set of links operable to convey a second set of information signals in the opposite direction of the first set of information signals and a link operable to convey a transaction request credit signal associated with the second set of information signals, the signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message may be sent using the second set of information signals.

Claims (114)

1. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a signal transport device, comprising:

a set of links operable to convey a first set of information signals from a first computer module to a second computer module;

a first link operable to convey a first transaction request credit signal associated with the first set of information signals in response to a number of extended transaction request credits being less than a threshold value, the first transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message can be sent using the first set of information signals;

a set of links operable to convey a second set of information signals in the opposite direction of the first set of information signals; and

a second link operable to convey a second transaction request credit signal associated with the second set of information signals in response to a number of extended transaction request credits being less than a threshold value, the second transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message can be sent using the second set of information signals.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a set of links operable to convey clock signals associated with the first set of information signals, the clock signals operable to maintain skew across the information signals; and

a set of links operable to convey clock signals associated with the second set of information signals, the clock signals operable to maintain skew across the information signals.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a link operable to convey a message initiation signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a message completion signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a message initiation signal associated with the second set of information signals; and

a link operable to convey a message completion signal associated with the second set of information signals.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a link operable to convey an error signal associated with the first set of information signals; and

a link operable to convey an error signal associated with the second set of information signals.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a link operable to convey a transaction request signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction response signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction request signal associated with the second set of information signals; and

a link operable to convey a transaction response signal associated with the second set of information signals.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a link operable to convey a computer module reset signal.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a link operable to convey a transaction response credit signal associated with the second set of information signals, the transaction response credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction response can be sent using the second set of information signals.

8. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a signal transport device, comprising:

a set of links operable to convey a first set of information signals from a first computer module to a second computer module;

a first link operable to convey a first transaction request credit signal associated with the first set of information signals, the first transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message can be sent using the first set of information signals;

a set of links operable to convey a second set of information signals in the opposite direction of the first set of information signals; and

a second link operable to convey a second transaction request credit signal associated with the second set of information signals, the second transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message can be sent using the second set of information signals;

a set of links operable to convey a first set of error correction code signals associated with the first set of information signals; and

a set of links operable to convey a second set of error correction code signals associated with the second set of information signals;

wherein the error correction code signals can be used to detect and correct single-bits errors, detect double-bit errors, and detect multiple-bit errors.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a link operable to convey a clock signal associated with the first set of error correction code signals, the clock signal operable to maintain skew across the error correction code signals; and

a link operable to convey a clock signal associated with the second set of error correction code signals, the clock signal operable to maintain skew across the error correction code signals.

10. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a signal transport device, comprising:

a set of links operable to convey a first set of information signals from a first computer module to a second computer module;

a first link operable to convey a first transaction request credit signal associated with the first set of information signals, the first transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message can be sent using the first set of information signals;

a set of links operable to convey a second set of information signals in the opposite direction of the first set of information signals; and

a second link operable to convey a second transaction request credit signal associated with the second set of information signals, the second transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request message can be sent using the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a channel clock signal, the channel clock signal allowing computer modules to execute in a frequency-locked manner;

a link operable convey a control clock signal associated with control signals associated with the first set of information signals, the control clock signal maintaining skew across the control signals; and

a link operable convey a control clock signal associated with control signals associated with the second set of information signals, the control clock signal maintaining skew across the control signals.

11. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a computer module operable to:

receive a first set of information signals;

send a second set of information signals;

send a transaction request credit associated with the first set of information signals in response to a number of extended transaction request credits being less than a threshold value, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent to the computer module using the first set of information signals; and

receive a transaction request credit associated with the second set of information signals in response to a number of extended transaction request credits being less than a threshold value, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent using the second set of information signals.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer module is further operable to:

receive clock signals associated with the first set of information signals, the clock signals operable to maintain skew across the information signals; and

send clock signals associated with the second set of information signals, the clock signals operable to maintain skew across the information signals.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer module is further operable to:

receive a message initiation signal associated with the first set of information signals;

receive a message completion signal associated with the first set of information signals;

send a message initiation signal associated with the second set of information signals; and

send a message completion signal associated with the second set of information signals.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer module is further operable to:

receive an error signal associated with the first set of information signals; and

send an error signal associated with the second set of information signals.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer module is further operable to:

receive a transaction request signal associated with the first set of information signals;

receive a transaction response signal associated with the first set of information signals;

send a transaction request signal associated with the second set of information signals; and

send a transaction response signal associated with the second set of information signals.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer module is further operable to receive a reset signal.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer module is further operable to receive a transaction response credit associated with the second set of information signals, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction response can be sent using the second set of information signals.

18. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a computer module operable to:

receive a first set of information signals;

send a second set of information signals;

send a transaction request credit associated with the first set of information signals, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent to the computer module using the first set of information signals; and

receive a transaction request credit associated with the second set of information signals, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent using the second set of information signals;

receive a set of error correction codes associated with the first set of information signals; and

send a set of error correction codes associated with the second set of information signals;

wherein the error correction codes can be used to detect and correct single-bits errors, detect double-bit errors, and detect some multiple-bit errors.

19. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a computer module operable to:

receive a first set of information signals;

send a second set of information signals;

send a transaction request credit associated with the first set of information signals, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent to the computer module using the first set of information signals; and

receive a transaction request credit associated with the second set of information signals, the credit indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent using the second set of information signals;

receive a channel clock signal, the channel clock signal allowing computer modules to execute in a phase-locked manner;

receive a control clock signal associated with control signals associated with the first set of information signals, the control clock signal maintaining skew across the control signals; and

send a control clock signal associated with control signals associated with the second set of information signals, the signal maintaining skew across the control signals.

20. A system for conveying information, comprising:

a signal transport device, comprising:

a set of links operable to convey a first set of information signals from a first computer module to a second computer module at a double data rate;

a set of links operable to convey clock signals associated with the first set of information signals at a double data rate, the clock signals operable to maintain skew across the information signals;

a set of links operable to convey a first set of error correction code signals associated with the first set of information signals at a double data rate, wherein the error correction code signals can be used to detect and correct single-bits errors, detect double-bit errors, and detect some multiple-bit errors;

a link operable to convey a clock signal associated with the first set of error correction code signals at a double data rate, the clock signal operable to maintain skew across the error correction code signals;

a link operable to convey a message initiation signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a message completion signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey an error signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction request signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction response signal associated with the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a control clock signal associated with the control signals associated with the first set of information signals, the clock control signal maintaining skew across the control signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction request credit signal associated with the first set of information signals, the transaction request credit signal indicating whether a transaction request can be sent using the first set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a channel clock signal, the channel clock signal allowing computer modules to execute in a phase-locked manner;

a set of links operable to convey a second set of information signals in the opposite direction of the first set of information signals at a double data rate;

a set of links operable to convey clock signals associated with the second set of information signals at a double data rate, the clock signals operable to maintain skew across the information signals;

a set of links operable to convey a second set of error correction code signals associated with the second set of information signals at a double data rate, wherein the error correction code signals can be used to detect and correct single-bits errors, detect double-bit errors, and detect some multiple-bit errors;

a link operable to convey a clock signal associated with the second set of error correction code signals at a double data rate, the clock signal operable to maintain skew across the error correction code signals;

a link operable to convey a message initiation signal associated with the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a message completion signal associated with the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey an error signal associated with the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction request signal associated with the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction response signal associated with the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction request credit signal associated with the second set of information signals, the transaction request credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction request can be sent using the second set of information signals;

a link operable to convey a transaction response credit signal associated with the second set of information signals, the transaction response credit signal indicating whether at least a portion of a transaction response can be sent using the second set of information signals;

a link operable convey a control clock signal associated with the control signals associated with the second set of information signals, the control clock signal maintaining skew across the control signals; and

a link operable to convey a computer module reset signal.
