Abstract

Articulating mechanisms, link systems, and components thereof, useful for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to, the remote manipulation of instruments such as surgical or diagnostic instruments or tools, are provided. The link systems include links wherein torque can be transferred between at least two adjacent links while allowing for pivoting motion between the links. Mechanisms for preventing undesired lateral movement of links relative to one another are also provided.

Claims (28)

1. An articulating mechanism capable of transmitting torque for remote manipulation of a surgical or diagnostic tool comprising:

at least two adjacent links and a bushing disposed between the adjacent links,

wherein each of the adjacent links comprises a channel,

wherein opposite ends of the bushing mate with the adjacent links to form ball and socket joints,

wherein both opposite ends of the bushing comprise first and second ball sections separated by an elongate member,

wherein the bushing comprises a channel extending from one of the opposite ends to the other of the opposite ends of the bushing and through the elongate member, wherein the channel of each of the adjacent links is in communication with the channel of the bushing to form a lumen, and

wherein each of the ball and socket joints comprises a pin mated with a slot for providing torque transmission between the adjacent links while allowing for pivoting movement of the adjacent links about the bushing, wherein the first ball section comprises a first slot disposed in a first plane and the second ball section comprises a second slot disposed in a second plane, the first plane being orthogonal to the second plane.

2. The articulating mechanism of claim 1 , wherein in at least one of the ball and socket joints the pin extends from the socket and the slot is recessed in the ball section.

3. An articulating link system capable of transmitting torque comprising:

two adjacent links;

a bushing disposed between the two adjacent links, the bushing having spherical surfaces disposed at opposite ends of the bushing and being separated by an elongate member; and

a control cable passing through or anchored to each of the two adjacent links, wherein the opposite ends of the bushing mate with the adjacent links to form ball and socket joints,

wherein each of the adjacent links comprises a channel,

wherein the bushing comprises a channel extending from one of the opposite ends to the other of the opposite ends of the bushing and through the elongate member, wherein the channel of each of the adjacent links is in communication with the channel of the bushing to form a lumen, and

wherein each of the ball and socket joints comprises a pair of pins mated with a pair of slots for providing torque transmission between the adjacent links while allowing for pivoting movement of the adjacent links about the bushing in response to a tension force being applied to the control cable, wherein the pairs of slots are recessed into each of the spherical surfaces wherein the pair of slots formed in a first spherical surface of the spherical surfaces are formed orthogonally to the pair of slots formed in a second spherical surface of the spherical surfaces.

4. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein in at least one of the ball and socket joints the pair of pins extend inwardly from a socket surface in one of the adjacent links.

5. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein the control cable does not pass through the bushing.

6. A surgical instrument capable of transmitting torque comprising:

a surgical or diagnostic tool;

the articulating link system of claim 3 proximal of the surgical or diagnostic tool; and

an elongated shaft proximal of the two adjacent links.

7. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein in at least one of the ball and socket joints, the pair of pins extend toward each other within a socket formed in one of the adjacent links.

8. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein the pairs of slots extend partially along the bushing.

9. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein the slots extend parallel to a central axis of the bushing.

10. The articulating mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the pin mated with the slot is configured to rotate within the slot.

11. The articulating mechanism of claim 1 , wherein a depth of the slot limits a degree of the pivoting movement relative to the mated pin.

12. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein the pair of pins mated with the pair of slots is configured to translate and rotate within the pair of slots.

13. The articulating link system of claim 3 , wherein a depth of a slot of the pair of slots limits a degree of the pivoting movement relative to a corresponding mated pin of the pair of pins.
