Abstract

A transducer assembly used for the megasonic processing of an article. In one aspect, the transducer assembly comprises: a vibration transmitter having a rear portion adapted to be supported adjacent to an article to be processed and having an elongated forward portion adapted to extend close to a surface of the article so that when a fluid is applied to the surface of the article, a meniscus of the fluid is formed between the elongated forward portion and the surface of the article; and a transducer coupled to the rear portion of the transmitter, the transducer adapted to oscillate at a frequency for propagating megasonic energy through the elongated forward portion of the transmitter and into the meniscus of the fluid. In one embodiment, the transducer assembly can further comprise a housing with at least one opening for flowing a gas into a space in the housing in contact with the transducer.

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus for megasonic processing of an article comprising:

a rotatable support for supporting an article;

a vibration transmitter having a rear portion and an elongated forward portion, the vibration transmitter positioned so that the elongate forward portion extends at an orientation other than normal to and close to but spaced from a surface of an article on the rotatable support so that when a fluid applied to the surface of the article, a meniscus of the fluid is formed between at least a portion of the elongated forward portion and the surface of the article; and

a transducer coupled to the rear portion of the transmitter, the transducer adapted to oscillate at a frequency for propagating megasonic energy through the elongated forward portion of the transmitter and into the meniscus of the fluid.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a housing enclosing the transducer; and

at least one opening in the housing for flowing a gas into the housing in contact with the transducer.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a housing enclosing the transducer, the elongated forward portion of the transmitter extending from the housing; and

one or more holes in the housing for mounting the transmitter in the close relation to the article.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the clongated forward portion of the vibration transmitter is a rod-like structure having a substantially constant cross-section.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the elongated forward portion of the vibration transmitter comprises quartz, sapphire, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, quartz coated with silicon carbide or quartz coated with vitreous carbon.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for supporting the transmitter in a cantilevered fashion.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a heat transfer member positioned adjacent the transducer to transfer heat away from the transducer, the heat transfer member being made of material which is a better heat conductor than the transmitter.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the transducer comprises one or more piezoelectric transducers.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a housing forming a space and having an open end; and

the transmitter mounted to the housing so that the transmitter encloses the open end, the transducer being located within the space.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for connecting the transducer to a source of electrical energy.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the elongate forward portion comprises an elongated edge, the transmitter adapted to be supported in such a manner that the meniscus of the fluid is formed between the elongated edge of the elongated forward portion and the surface of the article on the rotatable support.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

means for supporting the vibration transmitter in a cantilevered fashion;

means for connecting the transducer to a source of electrical energy;

wherein the transducer comprises one or more piezoelectric transducers;

wherein the elongated forward portion vibration transmitter comprises quartz, sapphire. silicon carbide, silicon nitride, quartz coated with silicon carbide or quartz coated with vitreous carbon; and

wherein the elongated forward portion of the vibration transmitter is a rod-like structure having a substantially constant circular cross-section.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the elongated forward portion of the vibration transmitted has a central axis, the vibration transmitter positioned so that the central axis of the elongated forward is not normal to the surface of the article on the rotatable support.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein elongated forward portion of the vibration transmitter is a rod-like structure having a substantially constant cross-section.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the elongated forward portion of the vibration transmitter has a substantially constant circular cross-section.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a housing having an open end, the transmitter mounted to the housing so that the transmitter encloses the open end of the housing; and

electrical connections extending through the housing and connected to the transducer.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the electrical connection extend through at a location opposite the open end.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the transducer is located within the housing.

19. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a housing;

electrical connections extending through the housing and connected to the transducer;

wherein the housing encloses at least that portion of the transducer to which the electrical connections are connected.

20. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluid is a liquid, the apparatus further comprising:

a dispenser positioned to apply liquid to the surface of the article on the rotatable support; and

a source of liquid operably to the dispenser.

21. An apparatus for megasonic processing of an article comprising:

a rotatable support for supporting an article;

a vibration transmitter having an elongated portion that extends at an orientation other than normal to and close to but spaced from a surface of an article on the rotatable support so that when a fluid is applied to the surface of the article, a meniscus of the fluid is formed between at least a portion of the elongated portion and the surface of the article; and

a transducer acoustically coupled to the vibration transmitter, the transducer adapted to oscillate at a frequency propagating megasonic energy through the elongated portion of the vibration transmitter and into the meniscus of the fluid.

22. An apparatus for megasonic processing of an article comprising:

a rotatable support for supporting an article;

a vibration transmitter having a rod-like portion that extends at an orientation other than normal to and spaced from surface of an article on the rotatable support so that when fluid is applied to the surface of the article, a meniscus of the fluid is formed between at least a portion of the rod-like portion of the vibration transmitter and the surface of the article; and
