Abstract

A surgical stapler end effector comprises a staple cartridge, an anvil, and a buttress assembly. The staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples and a deck. The staple cartridge is operable to drive the staples through the deck. The anvil is movable from an open position toward the staple cartridge to reach a closed position. The anvil includes an underside having staple forming surface configured to receive staples driven through the deck. The buttress assembly comprises a buttress body and an adhesive material. The adhesive material is configured to removably secure the buttress body to the deck of the staple cartridge or the underside of the anvil. The adhesive material comprises a malleable bioabsorbable polymer.

Claims (47)

1. A surgical stapler end effector, the end effector comprising:

(a) a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises:

(i) a plurality of staples, and

(ii) a deck, wherein the deck defines a plurality of openings, wherein the staple cartridge is operable to drive the staples through the openings of the deck;

(b) an anvil, wherein the anvil is movable from an open position toward the staple cartridge to reach a closed position, wherein the anvil includes an underside having staple forming surface configured to receive staples driven through the deck; and

(c) a buttress assembly, wherein the buttress assembly comprises:

(i) a buttress body, and

(ii) a layer of adhesive material disposed on a surface of the buttress body, wherein the adhesive material is configured to removably secure the buttress body to the deck of the staple cartridge, wherein the adhesive material defines openings or spaces within the layer of adhesive material, wherein the openings or spaces in the layer of adhesive material are arranged to correspond in a one-to-one relationship with the openings of the deck.

2. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive material comprises a copolymer of caprolactone and glycolide (PCL/PGA).

3. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 2 , wherein the copolymer of PCL/PGA is provided at a ratio of 65/35.

4. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive material comprises a copolymer of trimethylene carbonate and caprolactone (TMC/PCL).

5. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 4 , wherein the copolymer of TMC/PCL is provided at a ratio of 65/35.

6. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive material comprises a copolymer of lactide and caprolactone (PLA/PCL).

7. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 6 , wherein the copolymer of PLA/PCL is provided at a ratio of 75/25.

8. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive material comprises a copolymer of trimethylene carbonate and lactide (TMC/PLA).

9. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive material comprises an absorbable wax or putty.

10. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 9 , wherein the absorbable wax or putty comprises one or more of a water-soluble alkylene copolymer, glycerol, 1-lactide, glycolide, polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyethylene oxide (PEO), or polyolefin elastomer (POE).

11. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 9 , wherein the absorbable wax or putty comprises polyethylene glycol (PEG) or a polyethylene glycol (PEG) copolymer with a molecular weight of less than 20,000 g/mol.

12. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer is configured as a film on buttress body, wherein the film has a thickness in the range of 75 mils to 250 mils.

13. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 1 , further comprising a retainer, wherein the retainer comprises:

(i) a holding surface configured to hold the buttress assembly, and

(ii) a plurality of posts, wherein the posts are configured to provide focused pressure against discrete regions of the adhesive material to thereby drive the discrete regions of the adhesive material into engagement with the deck of the staple cartridge or the underside of the anvil.

14. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 13 , wherein the retainer further comprises a resilient member, wherein the resilient member is configured to resiliently urge the holding surface of the retainer into engagement with the deck of the staple cartridge or the underside of the anvil.

15. A surgical stapler end effector, the end effector comprising:

(a) a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises:

(i) a plurality of staples, and

(ii) a deck, wherein the staple cartridge is operable to drive the staples through the deck;

(b) an anvil, wherein the anvil is movable from an open position toward the staple cartridge to reach a closed position, wherein the anvil includes an underside having staple forming surface configured to receive staples driven through the deck; and

(c) a buttress assembly, wherein the buttress assembly comprises:

(i) a buttress body comprising a first lateral edge and a second lateral edge, wherein the first lateral edge and the second lateral edge define a first width therebetween,

(ii) a layer of adhesive material on a surface of the buttress assembly, wherein the layer of adhesive material comprises a third lateral edge and a fourth lateral edge, wherein the third lateral edge and the fourth lateral edge define a second width therebetween, wherein the adhesive material is configured to removably secure the buttress assembly to the deck of the staple cartridge or the underside of the anvil, wherein the adhesive material comprises a polymer, wherein the polymer is malleable, wherein the polymer is bioabsorbable, and

(iii) an intermediate layer interposed between the buttress body and the layer of adhesive material;

wherein the first width and the second width are equal.

16. The surgical stapler end effector of claim 15 , wherein the adhesive material comprises oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC).

The surgical stapler end effector of claim 15 , wherein the deck of the staple cartridge defines a plurality of openings, wherein the staple cartridge is operable to drive the staples through the openings of the deck, wherein the adhesive material defines a plurality of preformed openings, wherein the openings in the adhesive material are configured and arranged to correspond with the openings of the deck.

The surgical stapler end effector of claim 15 , wherein the deck of the staple cartridge defines a plurality of openings, wherein the staple cartridge is operable to drive the staples through the openings of the deck, wherein the openings of the deck are arranged in rows, wherein the adhesive material comprises a plurality of rods, wherein the rods are configured and arranged to correspond with regions of the deck between the rows of openings.

19. A surgical stapler end effector, the end effector comprising:

(a) a staple cartridge, wherein the staple cartridge comprises:

(i) a plurality of staples, and

(ii) a deck, wherein the staple cartridge is operable to drive the staples through the deck;

(b) an anvil, wherein the anvil is movable from an open position toward the staple cartridge to reach a closed position, wherein the anvil includes an underside having staple forming surface configured to receive staples driven through the deck;

(c) a buttress assembly, wherein the buttress assembly comprises:

(i) a buttress body, and

(ii) an adhesive material, wherein the adhesive material is configured to removably secure the buttress body to the deck of the staple cartridge or the underside of the anvil; and

(d) a retainer, wherein the retainer comprises:

(i) a holding surface configured to hold the buttress assembly, and

(ii) a plurality of protruding members on the holding surface, wherein the protruding members are configured to provide focused pressure in a direction perpendicular to and away from the holding surface against discrete regions of the adhesive material to thereby drive the discrete regions of the adhesive material into engagement with the deck of the staple cartridge or the underside of the anvil.
