Abstract

A surgical stapling system for stapling patient tissue is disclosed. The stapling system comprises a handle, a shaft, an end effector, and a firing system. The end effector comprises an anvil, a staple cartridge, an implantable layer, and anchors. The staple cartridge comprises a cartridge body comprising a deck surface including a plurality of staple cavities. The staple cartridge further comprises a plurality of staples and a longitudinal slot. The staples comprise a first longitudinal row of staples having a first unformed height and a second longitudinal row of staples having a second unformed height. The firing system comprises a tissue cutting edge and is configured to translate within the longitudinal slot such that the anchors are progressively transected by the tissue cutting edge to progressively release the implantable layer from the cartridge body while the staples are progressively ejected from the staple cavities to staple the patient tissue.

Claims (44)

1. A surgical stapling system for stapling patient tissue, comprising:

a handle;

a shaft extending from said handle;

an end effector attachable to said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises:

an anvil;

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body comprising a deck surface including a plurality of staple cavities, wherein said deck surface comprises a first longitudinal deck surface and a second longitudinal deck surface, and wherein said first longitudinal deck surface is taller than said second longitudinal deck surface;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in said staple cavities, wherein said plurality of staples comprises a first longitudinal row of staples having a first unformed height and a second longitudinal row of staples having a second unformed height, and wherein said first unformed height is different than said second unformed height;

a longitudinal slot defined in said cartridge body;

a proximal end; and

a distal end;

an implantable layer positioned adjacent to said deck surface; and

a plurality of anchors configured to releasably retain said implantable layer to said cartridge body, wherein said plurality of anchors extend over said first longitudinal deck surface and said second longitudinal deck surface; and

a firing system comprising a tissue cutting edge, wherein said firing system is configured to translate within said longitudinal slot from said proximal end toward said distal end such that said anchors are progressively transected by said tissue cutting edge to progressively release said implantable layer from said cartridge body while said staples are progressively ejected from said staple cavities to staple the patient tissue.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said firing system is further configured to translate within said longitudinal slot from said proximal end toward said distal end to progressively transect the patient tissue.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said firing system is further configured to translate within said longitudinal slot from said proximal end toward said distal end to progressively transect said implantable layer.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said implantable layer comprises a plurality of detachable segments.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein each detachable segment of said implantable layer corresponds to at least one of said plurality of anchors.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , wherein each said detachable segment of said implantable layer is releasably retained to said cartridge body by said at least one of said plurality of anchors.

7. An end effector for stapling patient tissue, wherein said end effector comprises:

an anvil;

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion comprising a support surface including a plurality of staple cavities, wherein said support portion comprises a first longitudinal support surface and a second longitudinal support surface, and wherein said first longitudinal support surface is taller than said second longitudinal support surface;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in said staple cavities, wherein said plurality of staples comprises a first longitudinal row of staples having a first unformed height and a second longitudinal row of staples having a second unformed height, and wherein said first unformed height is different than said second unformed height;

a knife slot defined in said support portion;

a proximal end; and

a distal end;

an implantable layer positioned against said support portion;

one or more anchors configured to releasably hold said implantable layer to said support portion, wherein said one or more anchors traverse said knife slot between said proximal end and said distal end, and wherein said one or more anchors extend over said first longitudinal support surface and said second longitudinal support surface; and

a firing system comprising a cutting edge, wherein said firing system is configured to translate within said knife slot from said proximal end toward said distal end such that said one or more anchors are transected by said cutting edge to release said implantable layer from said support portion while said staples are progressively ejected from said staple cavities to staple the patient tissue.

8. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said firing system is further configured to translate within said knife slot from said proximal end toward said distal end to progressively transect the patient tissue.

9. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said firing system is further configured to translate within said knife slot from said proximal end toward said distal end to progressively transect said implantable layer.

10. An end effector for stapling patient tissue, wherein said end effector comprises:

an anvil;

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a support portion comprising a support surface including a plurality of staple cavities, wherein said support portion comprises a first longitudinal support surface and a second longitudinal support surface, and wherein said first longitudinal support surface is taller than said second longitudinal support surface;

a plurality of staples removably positioned in said staple cavities, wherein said plurality of staples comprises a first longitudinal row of staples having a first unformed height and a second longitudinal row of staples having a second unformed height, and wherein said first unformed height is different than said second unformed height;

a longitudinal slot defined in said support portion;

a proximal end; and

a distal end;

an implantable layer positioned against said support portion;

a proximal anchor configured to releasably retain said implantable layer to said support portion, wherein said proximal anchor extends over at least a portion of said implantable layer, said first longitudinal support surface, said second longitudinal support surface, and said longitudinal slot;

a distal anchor configured to releasably retain said implantable layer to said support portion, wherein said distal anchor extends over at least a portion of said implantable layer, said first longitudinal support surface, said second longitudinal support surface, and said longitudinal slot; and

a firing system comprising a cutting edge, wherein said firing system is configured to translate within said longitudinal slot from said proximal end toward said distal end such that said proximal anchor and said distal anchor are progressively transected by said cutting edge to progressively release said implantable layer from said support portion while said staples are progressively ejected from said staple cavities to staple the patient tissue.
