Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising a first iaw, a second iaw, a staple cartridge, a firing system, an electric motor, a power source, a regulator, and a control system is disclosed. The first iaw is movable relative to the second iaw to capture tissue between the first iaw and the second iaw. The staple cartridge is supported by the second iaw and comprises staples removably stored therein. The firing system is configured to drive the staples toward the first jaw. The electric motor is mechanically coupled to the firing system. The power source is electrically couplable to the electric motor. The regulator is electrically connected to the power source and the electric motor. The control system is electrically connected to the regulator. The control system is configured to control a speed of the electric motor based on a voltage set point of the regulator.

Claims (47)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein the first jaw is movable relative to the second jaw to capture tissue between the first jaw and the second jaw;

a staple cartridge supported by the second jaw, wherein the staple cartridge comprises staples removably stored therein;

a firing system configured to drive the staples toward the first jaw;

an electric motor mechanically coupled to the firing system;

a power source electrically couplable to the electric motor;

a regulator electrically connected to the power source and the electric motor; and

a control system electrically connected to the regulator, wherein the control system is configured to control a speed of the electric motor based on a voltage set point of the regulator.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw comprises an anvil.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the staple cartridge is removably seated in the second jaw.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the power source comprises at least one of the following:

a rechargeable power source; and

a replaceable power source.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the power source comprises a plurality of battery cells.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the regulator is configured to:

output a first voltage at a first time; and

output a second voltage at a second time, wherein the second voltage is less than the first voltage.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the regulator is configured to switch from outputting the first voltage to outputting the second voltage if a voltage applied by the power source is greater than the voltage set point of the regulator.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the voltage set point of the regulator is adjustable.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to control the speed of the electric motor by controlling a voltage output by the regulator.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to measure a power source voltage.

11. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an elongate channel;

an anvil pivotably coupled to the elongate channel;

a staple cartridge positioned within the elongate channel;

staples removably positioned within the staple cartridge;

a firing system configured to fire the staples toward the anvil;

an electric motor mechanically coupled to the firing system;

a power source electrically couplable to the electric motor;

a power regulator electrically coupled to the power source and the electric motor; and

a control system electrically connected to the power regulator, wherein the control system is configured to lower a speed of the electric motor if a voltage applied by the power source is greater than a voltage set point of the power regulator.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the staple cartridge is a replaceable staple cartridge.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the power source comprises at least one of the following:

a rechargeable power source; and

a replaceable power source.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the power source comprises a plurality of battery cells.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein the control system is further configured to measure the voltage applied by the power source.

16. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw pivotably connected to the first jaw;

a replaceable staple cartridge removably positioned within the second jaw;

staples removably positioned within the replaceable staple cartridge;

a firing system configured to fire the staples toward the first jaw;

an electric motor mechanically coupled to the firing system;

a power source electrically couplable to the electric motor; and

means for reducing a speed of the electric motor if a voltage applied by the power source is greater than a predetermined threshold.
