Abstract

A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a handle, a firing actuator operably coupled to the handle, a closure drive configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion, a firing drive configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of the firing actuator, and an elongate shaft assembly operably coupled to the closure drive and the firing drive to separately transmit the closing motion before the rotary firing motion, and an end effector responsive to the closing motion. The end effector comprises a staple cartridge, an anvil, a cutting member movable relative to the staple cartridge in response to the rotary firing motion from the elongate shaft assembly, and an I-beam configured to control spacing between the anvil and the staple cartridge during deployment of the staples.

Claims (73)

1. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples, said surgical instrument comprising:

a handle assembly;

a firing trigger operably coupled to said handle assembly;

a closure drive supported by said handle assembly and configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion;

a firing drive supported by said handle assembly and configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of said firing trigger and a rotary retraction motion upon another actuation of said firing trigger;

an elongate shaft assembly coupled to said handle assembly and communicating with said closure drive and said firing drive to separately and sequentially transfer said closing and opening motions and said rotary firing motion; and

an end effector coupled to said elongate shaft assembly, said end effector comprising:

an elongate channel sized to receive the staple cartridge;

an anvil pivotally coupled to said elongate channel and being pivotally responsive to said opening and closing motions from said elongate shaft assembly;

a cutting member operably supported within said elongate channel and being responsive to said rotary firing and retraction motions from said elongate shaft assembly; and

an I-beam configured to control spacing between said anvil and the staple cartridge.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises said staple cartridge.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said handle assembly about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft assembly.

4. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples, said surgical instrument comprising:

a handle assembly;

a firing trigger operably coupled to said handle assembly;

a closure drive supported by said handle assembly and configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion;

a firing drive supported by said handle assembly and configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of said firing trigger and a rotary retraction motion upon another actuation of said firing trigger;

an elongate shaft assembly coupled to said handle assembly and communicating with said closure drive and said firing drive to separately and sequentially transfer said closing and opening motions and said rotary firing motion; and

an end effector coupled to said elongate shaft assembly, said end effector comprising:

an elongate channel sized to receive the staple cartridge;

an anvil pivotally coupled to said elongate channel and being pivotally responsive to said opening and closing motions from said elongate shaft assembly;

a cutting member operably supported within said elongate channel and being responsive to said rotary firing and retraction motions from said elongate shaft assembly; and

an I-beam configured to control spacing between said anvil and the staple cartridge during deployment of the staples.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein said I-beam comprises a distal portion, and wherein said distal portion comprises said cutting member.

6. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples, said surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing actuator operably coupled to said handle;

a closure drive configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion;

a firing drive configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of said firing actuator and a rotary retraction motion;

an elongate shaft assembly extending from said handle, wherein said elongate shaft assembly is operably coupled to said closure drive and said firing drive to separately transmit said closing and opening motions and said rotary firing motion in a predetermined order; and

an end effector extending from said elongate shaft assembly, wherein said end effector is responsive to said closing and opening motions, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge;

an anvil;

a cutting member movable relative to said staple cartridge in response to said rotary firing and retraction motions from said elongate shaft assembly; and

a camming member configured to control the spacing of said anvil relative to the staple cartridge.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said handle about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft assembly.

8. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples, said surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing actuator operably coupled to said handle;

a closure drive configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion;

a firing drive configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of said firing actuator and a rotary retraction motion;

an elongate shaft assembly extending from said handle, wherein said elongate shaft assembly is operably coupled to said closure drive and said firing drive to separately transmit said closing and opening motions and said rotary firing motion in a predetermined order; and

an end effector extending from said elongate shaft assembly, wherein said end effector is responsive to said closing and opening motions, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge;

an anvil;

a cutting member movable relative to said staple cartridge in response to said rotary firing and retraction motions from said elongate shaft assembly; and

an I-beam configured to control spacing between said anvil and the staple cartridge during deployment of the staples.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein said I-beam comprises a distal portion, and wherein said distal portion comprises said cutting member.

10. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples, said surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing actuator operably coupled to said handle;

a closure drive configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion;

a firing drive configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of said firing actuator;

an elongate shaft assembly extending from said handle, wherein said elongate shaft assembly is operably coupled to said closure drive and said firing drive to separately transmit said closing motion before said rotary firing motion; and

an end effector extending from said elongate shaft assembly, wherein said end effector is responsive to said closing motion, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge;

an anvil;

a cutting member movable relative to said staple cartridge in response to said rotary firing motion from said elongate shaft assembly; and

a camming member configured to control spacing between said anvil and the staple cartridge.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said handle about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft assembly.

12. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge removably storing a plurality of staples, said surgical instrument comprising:

a handle;

a firing actuator operably coupled to said handle;

a closure drive configured to selectively generate a closing motion and an opening motion;

a firing drive configured to selectively generate a rotary firing motion upon actuation of said firing actuator;

an elongate shaft assembly extending from said handle, wherein said elongate shaft assembly is operably coupled to said closure drive and said firing drive to separately transmit said closing motion before said rotary firing motion; and

an end effector extending from said elongate shaft assembly, wherein said end effector is responsive to said closing motion, and wherein said end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge;

an anvil;

a cutting member movable relative to said staple cartridge in response to said rotary firing motion from said elongate shaft assembly; and

an I-beam configured to control spacing between said anvil and the staple cartridge during deployment of the staples.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein said I-beam comprises a distal portion, and wherein said distal portion comprises said cutting member.
