Abstract

A surgical instrument. The surgical instrument includes an elongated channel configured to support a staple cartridge, an anvil pivotably connected to the elongated channel, a knife mechanically coupled to the staple cartridge, an electric motor and a control circuit electrically connected to the electric motor. The control circuit is configured to change a firing motion of the surgical instrument based on a combination of events.

Claims (38)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

an elongated channel configured to support a staple cartridge; and

an anvil pivotably connected to the elongated channel, wherein at least one of the anvil and the elongated channel is movable relative to the other to transition the end effector between an open configuration and a closed configuration;

a closure tube configured to transmit a closing motion to the end effector for transitioning the end effector from the open configuration to the closed configuration;

an electric motor operably coupled to the closure tube, wherein the electric motor is configured to motivate the closure tube to cause the end effector to transition from the open configuration to the closed configuration during a closure cycle; and

a control circuit electrically connected to the electric motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to cause the electric motor to change the closing motion of the surgical instrument by automatically stopping and restarting the closing motion during the closure cycle.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the change in the closing motion is based on a combination of events, wherein the combination of events comprises damage to the surgical instrument, damage to the staple cartridge, loading between the anvil and the staple cartridge, or use conditions.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine a level of overstress or over indicated use and either slow down the closing motion, only allow completion of a current closure cycle, fully shutdown the surgical instrument, or only complete a predetermined number of additional firings.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the surgical instrument is reusable.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit comprises:

at least one sensor configured to sense a closing force of the end effector; and

a controller electrically coupled to the at least one sensor and the electric motor.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the control circuit is configured to change the closing motion in response to the closing force exceeding a predetermined threshold at different times during the closing motion.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the control circuit is configured change the closing motion in response to the closing force exceeding a predetermined threshold a predetermined number of times during a closing motion.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to stop the closing motion by returning the anvil to the open configuration.

9. A medical instrument, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

an elongated channel configured to support a staple cartridge; and

an anvil pivotably connected to the elongated channel, wherein at least one of the anvil and the elongated channel is movable relative to the other to transition the end effector between an open configuration and a closed configuration;

a knife movable relative to the elongate channel in a firing cycle to cut tissue captured by the end effector;

an electric motor operably coupled to the knife, wherein the electric motor is configured to move the knife in a firing motion to cut the tissue; and

a control circuit electrically connected to the electric motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to cause the electric motor to change the firing motion of the medical instrument by automatically stopping and restarting the firing motion during the firing cycle.

10. The medical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the control circuit comprises:

at least one sensor configured to sense a firing force of the knife; and

a controller electrically coupled to the at least one sensor and the electric motor.

11. The medical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to change the firing motion in response to the firing force exceeding a predetermined threshold at different times during the firing motion.

12. The medical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to change the firing motion in response to the firing force exceeding a predetermined threshold a predetermined number of times during the firing motion.

13. The medical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the control circuit is configured to stop the firing motion by returning the knife to a fully retracted position.

14. A surgical instrument for use with a staple cartridge, the surgical instrument comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to the first jaw to transition the end effector between an open configuration and a closed configuration during a closure cycle;

an elongated channel configured to support the staple cartridge; and

an anvil;

a closure drive member operably coupled to the second jaw;

an electric motor operably coupled to the closure drive member, wherein the electric motor is configured to transmit a closure motion to the closure drive member to cause the end effector to transition from the open configuration to the closed configuration during the closure cycle; and

a control circuit electrically connected to the electric motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to cause the electric motor to change the closure motion of the surgical instrument by automatically alternating between stopping and restarting the closure motion during the closure cycle.
