Abstract

The present invention includes a surgical stapler having a staple cartridge, an anvil, a cutting member having a cutting surface, and a driver operably engaged with the cutting member to move the cutting member relative to the anvil and the staple cartridge. In at least one embodiment, one of the anvil and the staple cartridge defines a slot which is configured to receive at least a portion of the cutting member and guide the cutting member as it is moved relative to the anvil and the staple cartridge. In these embodiments, the slot can also be configured to receive a portion of the driver operably engaged with cutting member and support the driver when it moves the cutting member. In at least one embodiment, the slot is defined by at least one radius of curvature.

Claims (29)

1. A staple cartridge for use with a surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot extending from said proximal end toward said distal end;

a deck comprising a first deck portion and a second deck portion on opposite sides of said longitudinal slot;

a projection extending into a proximal portion of said longitudinal slot; and

staple cavities defined in said first deck portion and said second deck portion;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

staple drivers configured to eject said staples from said staple cavities; and

a sled, comprising:

cam surfaces configured to lift said staple drivers toward said deck during a staple firing stroke;

a center body configured to be received within said longitudinal slot; and

a recess defined in said center body, wherein said sled is movable from a proximal position in which said projection extends along a plane with said recess to a distal position during said staple firing stroke.

2. A staple cartridge for use with a surgical stapling instrument having a tissue cutting member, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot extending from said proximal end toward said distal end, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive the cutting member;

a deck;

a rib extending into a proximal portion of said longitudinal slot; and

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

staple drivers configured to eject said staples from said staple cavities; and

a sled configured to move between a proximal position and a distal position during a firing stroke, wherein said sled comprises:

inclined surfaces configured to lift said staple drivers toward said deck during said firing stroke;

a middle body configured to be received within said longitudinal slot; and

a groove defined in said middle body, wherein said groove is configured to laterally-align with said rib at the proximal end of said firing stroke.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 2 , wherein said groove is configured to interface with said rib when said sled is in said proximal position.
