Abstract

A powered surgical stapler comprising an outer housing body, a shaft housing rotatable relative to the outer housing body, an elongate shaft extending from the shaft housing and including a driver, an inner housing assembly configured to be removably attached to the outer housing body, a plurality of securing features, and a loading unit is disclosed. The inner housing assembly comprises a motor configured to output rotary motions, a battery, control electronics in signal communication with the motor and a shaft output configured to be driven by the motor. The plurality of securing features are configured to align and hold the inner housing assembly in a position which allows the shaft output to be operably attached to the driver. The loading unit is removably attachable to the elongate shaft and comprises an end effector configured to perform an end effector function in response to the rotary motions of the motor.

Claims (53)

1. A powered surgical stapler, comprising:

an outer housing body;

a shaft housing attachable to said outer housing body, wherein said shaft housing is rotatable relative to said outer housing body;

an elongate shaft extending from said shaft housing, wherein said elongate shaft comprises a driver;

an inner housing assembly configured to be removably attached to said outer housing body, wherein said inner housing assembly comprises:

a motor configured to output rotary motions;

a battery configured to supply power to said motor;

control electronics in signal communication with said motor; and

a shaft output configured to be driven by said motor;

a plurality of securing features configured to align and hold said inner housing assembly in a position which allows said shaft output to be operably attached to said driver; and

a loading unit configured to be removably attached to said elongate shaft, wherein said loading unit comprises an end effector configured to perform an end effector function in response to said rotary motions of said motor.

2. The powered surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said loading unit further comprises:

an articulation joint;

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is moveable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a removable staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples.

3. The powered surgical stapler of claim 2 , wherein said battery is rechargeable.

4. The powered surgical stapler of claim 1 , wherein said outer housing body comprises a switch cover and said inner housing assembly comprises a switch, and wherein, when said inner housing assembly is attached to said outer housing body, said switch cover is operably aligned with said switch.

5. A powered surgical stapler, comprising:

an outer housing;

an elongate shaft extending from said outer housing, wherein said elongate shaft comprises a driver and a shaft housing attachable to said outer housing, wherein said shaft housing is rotatable relative to said outer housing;

an inner housing assembly, comprising:

a motor configured to output rotary motions;

a battery configured to supply power to said motor;

control electronics in signal communication with said motor; and

a shaft output configured to be driven by said motor, wherein said shaft output is configured to be operably attached to said driver;

a loading unit configured to be removably attached to said elongate shaft, wherein said loading unit comprises an end effector configured to perform an end effector function in response to said rotary motions of said motor; and

means for removably attaching said inner housing assembly to said outer housing, wherein, after a surgical procedure, said outer housing can be replaced with a new outer housing and said inner housing assembly can be disinfected and then reattached to said new outer housing.

6. The powered surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said loading unit further comprises:

an articulation joint;

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is moveable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a removable staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples.

7. The powered surgical stapler of claim 6 , wherein said battery is rechargeable.

8. The powered surgical stapler of claim 5 , wherein said outer housing comprises a switch cover and said inner housing assembly comprises a switch, and wherein, when said inner housing assembly is attached to said outer housing, said switch cover is operably aligned with said switch.

9. A powered surgical stapler, comprising:

an inner housing assembly, comprising:

a motor configured to output rotary motions;

control electronics in signal communication with said motor; and

a shaft output configured to be driven by said motor;

an outer housing body, comprising:

a cavity configured to receive said inner housing assembly; and

a rotatable member configured to lock said inner housing assembly into place within said outer housing body;

a shaft housing attachable to said outer housing body, wherein said shaft housing is rotatable relative to said outer housing body;

an elongate shaft extending from said shaft housing, wherein said elongate shaft comprises a driver, and wherein said driver is configured to be operably coupled with said shaft output; and

a loading unit configured to be removably attached to said elongate shaft, wherein said loading unit comprises an end effector configured to perform an end effector function in response to said rotary motions of said motor.

10. The powered surgical stapler of claim 9 , wherein said loading unit further comprises:

an articulation joint;

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is moveable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw; and

a removable staple cartridge comprising a plurality of staples.

11. The powered surgical stapler of claim 10 , wherein said inner housing assembly further comprises a rechargeable battery.

12. The powered surgical stapler of claim 9 , wherein said outer housing body comprises a switch cover and said inner housing assembly comprises a switch, and wherein, when said inner housing assembly is inserted into said cavity in said outer housing body, said switch cover is operably aligned with said switch.
