Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly includes a stepped staple cartridge deck and an implantable layer, such as a tissue thickness compensator and/or a buttress material, for example, positioned thereon. The layer can include a first portion positioned over a first deck surface of the multi-step staple cartridge and a second portion positioned over a second deck surface of the multi-step staple cartridge. The first portion includes a first tissue-contacting surface and the second portion includes a second tissue-contacting surface, wherein the first tissue-contacting surface is vertically offset from the second tissue-contacting surface.

a plurality of second staple drivers positioned in said second staple cavities, wherein each said second staple driver is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, wherein each said second staple driver comprises a second support cradle, wherein a second distance is defined between each said second support cradle and a said second forming pocket when said second staple drivers are in said unfired position;

a plurality of third staple drivers positioned in said third staple cavities, wherein each said third staple driver is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, wherein each said third staple driver comprises a third support cradle, wherein a third distance is defined between each said third support cradle and a said third forming pocket when said third staple drivers are in said unfired position, wherein said first distance is greater than said second distance, and wherein said second distance is greater than said third distance;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

a sled configured to engage said staple drivers during a firing stroke;

a proximal attachment member;

a distal attachment member; and

an implantable layer, wherein said proximal attachment member and said distal attachment member attach said implantable layer to said cartridge body prior to the installation of said staple cartridge assembly into said surgical stapling assembly, wherein said implantable layer comprises:

a first portion positioned over said first deck surface;

a second portion positioned over said second deck surface; and

a third portion positioned over said third deck surface, wherein said first portion and said second portion are positioned below said third portion when said implantable layer is attached to said cartridge body.

2. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an unclamped position and a clamped position;

an anvil comprising forming pockets defined in a tissue support surface; and

a staple cartridge assembly releasably attachable to one of said first jaw and said second jaw, wherein said staple cartridge assembly comprises:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a longitudinal slot;

a first deck surface positioned on a first side of said longitudinal slot;

a second deck surface positioned on said first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said second deck surface is closer to said longitudinal slot than said first deck surface, and wherein said second deck surface extends above said first deck surface;

a third deck surface positioned on said first side of said longitudinal slot, wherein said third deck surface extends above said second deck surface, and wherein said third deck surface is positioned adjacent said longitudinal slot;

a longitudinal row of first staple cavities defined in said first deck surface;

a longitudinal row of second staple cavities defined in said second deck surface; and

a longitudinal row of third staple cavities defined in said third deck surface;

a plurality of first staple drivers positioned in said first staple cavities, wherein each said first staple driver is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, wherein each said first staple driver comprises a first support cradle positioned a first distance from said tissue support surface when said first staple drivers are in said unfired position and said second jaw is in said clamped position;

a plurality of second staple drivers positioned in said second staple cavities, wherein each said second staple driver is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, wherein each said second staple driver comprises a second support cradle positioned a second distance from said tissue support surface when said second staple drivers are in said unfired position and said second jaw is in said clamped position;

a plurality of third staple drivers positioned in said third staple cavities, wherein each said third staple driver is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, wherein each said third staple driver comprises a third support cradle positioned a third distance from said tissue support surface when said third staple drivers are in said unfired position and said second jaw is in said clamped position, wherein said first distance is greater than said second distance, and wherein said second distance is greater than said third distance; and

staples removably stored in said staple cavities,
