Abstract

A surgical stapling anvil for use with a surgical instrument is disclosed. The anvil comprises an anvil body comprising a tissue-facing surface and a longitudinal cavity. The longitudinal cavity comprises a first cavity portion configured to receive at least a portion of a cutting edge of a firing member of the surgical instrument therethrough, a second cavity portion configured to receive an anvil-engaging portion of the firing member therethrough, and a third cavity portion comprising a first angular surface which flares outward relative to the second cavity portion. The anvil further comprises an anvil cap comprising a first section positioned within a portion of the second cavity portion and a second section positioned within the third cavity portion, wherein the second section comprises a second angular surface corresponding to the first angular surface, and wherein the first angular surface and the second angular surface are welded together.

Claims (58)

1. A surgical stapling anvil for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said surgical stapling anvil comprises:

an anvil body, comprising:

a tissue-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple-forming pockets defined therein; and

a longitudinal cavity defined therein, wherein said longitudinal cavity comprises:

a first cavity portion comprising a first width, wherein said first cavity portion is configured to receive at least a portion of a cutting edge of a firing member of the surgical instrument therethrough;

a second cavity portion comprising a second width which is greater than said first width, wherein said second cavity portion comprises a first surface comprising first angle, and wherein said second cavity portion is configured to receive an anvil-engaging portion of the firing member therethrough; and

an anvil cap, comprising:

a first section positioned within a portion of said second cavity portion; and

a second section positioned within said third cavity portion, wherein said second section comprises a second angular surface corresponding to said first angular surface, and wherein a mated portion of said first angular surface and said second angular surface define a mated depth; and

a weld welding said first angular surface and said second angular surface together, wherein said weld comprises a weld depth.

2. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 1 , wherein said anvil cap comprises a Y-shaped cross section.

3. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 1 , wherein said weld depth is between 0.015 inches and 0.040 inches.

4. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 3 , wherein said weld depth is 0.030 inches.

5. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 1 , wherein said weld comprises a laser weld.

6. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 1 , wherein said weld depth is less than said mated depth.

7. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 1 , wherein said weld depth is greater than said mated depth.

8. A surgical stapling anvil for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said surgical stapling anvil comprises:

an anvil body, comprising:

a tissue-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple-forming pockets defined therein; and

a longitudinal cavity defined therein, wherein said longitudinal cavity comprises:

a first cavity portion comprising a first width, wherein said first cavity portion is configured to receive at least a portion of a cutting edge of a firing member of the surgical instrument therethrough;

a second cavity portion comprising a second width which is greater than said first width, wherein said second cavity portion is configured to receive an anvil-engaging portion of the firing member therethrough; and

a third cavity portion comprising a third width which is greater than said second width, wherein said third cavity portion further comprises a first angular surface which flares outward relative to said second cavity portion;

an anvil cap, comprising:

a first section positioned within a portion of said second cavity portion; and

a second section positioned within said third cavity portion, wherein said second section comprises a second angular surface corresponding to said first angular surface, and wherein a mated portion of said first angular surface and said second angular surface define a mated depth; and

a weld welding said first angular surface and said second angular surface together, wherein said weld comprises a weld depth, wherein said third cavity portion comprises a first ledge surface, wherein said second section comprises a second ledge surface corresponding to said first ledge surface, and wherein said first ledge surface and said second ledge surface are at least substantially parallel to said tissue-facing surface.

9. The surgical stapling anvil of claim 8 , wherein said weld extends into said first and second ledge surfaces.

10. A surgical stapling anvil for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said surgical stapling anvil comprises:

a first anvil member, comprising:

a tissue-facing surface comprising a plurality of staple-forming pockets defined therein; and

a longitudinal cavity, comprising:

a first cavity portion comprising a first width, wherein said first cavity portion is configured to receive at least a portion of a cutting edge of a firing member of the surgical instrument therethrough;

a second cavity portion comprising a second width which is greater than said first width, wherein said second cavity portion is configured to receive an anvil-engaging portion of the firing member therethrough; and
