Abstract

An end effector is disclosed. The end effector can include a staple cartridge comprising a staple comprising a first leg. The end effector can also include an anvil comprising a tissue compression surface, wherein a plurality of pockets are defined in the tissue compression surface, wherein the plurality of pockets comprises a pocket comprising a first cup configured to form the first leg. The first cup can comprise a first lateral side, a second lateral side, and a bottom intermediate the first lateral side and the second lateral side, wherein the bottom defines a depth relative to the tissue compression surface, and wherein the depth varies longitudinally along the length of the bottom. The first cup can further comprise sidewalls extending from the respective lateral sides to the bottom, wherein the sidewalls are defined by entirely-curved surfaces.

Claims (66)

1. An end effector, comprising:

a staple cartridge comprising a staple comprising a first leg; and

an anvil comprising a tissue compression surface, wherein a plurality of pockets are defined in said tissue compression surface, wherein said plurality of pockets comprises a pocket comprising a first cup configured to form said first leg, and wherein said first cup comprises:

a staple leg entry zone;

a staple leg exit zone;

a first lateral side;

a second lateral side;

a bottom intermediate said first lateral side and said second lateral side, wherein said bottom defines a depth relative to said tissue compression surface, and wherein said depth varies longitudinally along a length of said bottom;

a first sidewall extending from said first lateral side to said bottom; and

a second sidewall extending from said second lateral side to said bottom;

wherein the first sidewall defines a first lateral radius of curvature, the second sidewall defines a second lateral radius of curvature, and the bottom defines a third lateral radius of curvature, wherein the third lateral radius of curvature differs from the first lateral radius of curvature and the second lateral radius of curvature, wherein said first sidewall, said second sidewall, and said bottom define a first profile, wherein said first profile is an entirely-smooth curve having a defined slope at each point of the first profile, wherein said first profile is positioned within a portion of said staple leg entry zone, wherein said first sidewall, said second sidewall, and said bottom define a second profile, wherein said second profile is an entirely-smooth curve having a defined slope at each point of the second profile, wherein said second profile is positioned within a portion of said staple leg exit zone, and wherein said first profile and said second profile are different.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first cup is devoid of flat surfaces.

3. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said pocket further comprises:

a first beveled edge intermediate said tissue compression surface and said first lateral side; and

a second beveled edge intermediate said tissue compression surface and said second lateral side.

The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said pocket further comprises a second cup, wherein said staple further comprises a second leg, wherein said second cup is configured to form the second leg of said staple, wherein said pocket is bilaterally symmetric with respect to a longitudinal axis extending through said first cup and said second cup, and wherein said pocket is bilaterally symmetric with respect to a transverse axis oriented perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and spaced equidistant from said first cup and said second cup.

5. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first profile transects said tissue compression surface at a constant angle along said first lateral side and said second lateral side.

6. The end effector of claim 5 , wherein each of said first profile and said second profile defines a parabolic curve.

7. An end effector, comprising:

a staple cartridge comprising a staple comprising a first leg; and

an anvil comprising a tissue compression surface, wherein a plurality of pockets are defined in said tissue compression surface, wherein said plurality of pockets comprises a pocket comprising a first cup configured to form said first leg, and wherein said first cup comprises:

a first lateral side;

a second lateral side;

a bottom intermediate said first lateral side and said second lateral side, wherein said bottom defines a depth relative to said tissue compression surface, and wherein said depth varies longitudinally along a length of said bottom; and

a plurality of parabolic boundary curves extending intermediate said first lateral side and said second lateral side;

wherein each of the parabolic boundary curves comprises a first lateral radius of curvature corresponding to a first sidewall extending from said first lateral side to said bottom, a second lateral radius of curvature corresponding to a second sidewall extending from said second lateral side to said bottom, and a third lateral radius of curvature corresponding to the bottom;

wherein the third lateral radius of curvature differs from the first lateral radius of curvature and the second lateral radius of curvature within each said parabolic boundary curve;

wherein each said parabolic boundary curve is an entirely-smooth curve having a defined slope at each point of the parabolic boundary curve; and

wherein at least one of said parabolic boundary curves is different from another one of said parabolic boundary curves.

8. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said first cup further comprises:

an entry zone;

an exit zone; and

a transition zone intermediate said entry zone and said exit zone;

wherein a tangent to said first sidewall at said first lateral side is oriented at a constant angle in said entry zone, said exit zone, and said transition zone.

9. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said first cup defines an entirely-curved boundary surface.

10. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein each said parabolic boundary curve comprises a vertex positioned along said bottom.

11. The end effector of claim 10 , wherein said first sidewall defines a first entirely-curved boundary surface, and wherein said second sidewall defines a second entirely-curved boundary surface.

12. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said pocket further comprises:

a first beveled edge intermediate said tissue compression surface and said first lateral side; and

a second beveled edge intermediate said tissue compression surface and said second lateral side.

13. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said staple further comprises a second leg, wherein said pocket further comprises a second cup configured to form said second leg, wherein said pocket is bilaterally symmetric with respect to a longitudinal axis extending through said first cup and said second cup, and wherein said pocket is bilaterally symmetric with respect to a transverse axis oriented perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and spaced equidistant from said first cup and said second cup.

14. An end effector, comprising:

a staple cartridge comprising a staple comprising a first leg; and

an anvil comprising a planar surface, wherein a plurality of pockets are defined in said planar surface, wherein said plurality of pockets comprises a pocket comprising a first cup configured to form said first leg, wherein said first cup defines a boundary surface comprising a bottom, a first sidewall, and a second sidewall, wherein said bottom defines a depth relative to said planar surface, and wherein said depth varies longitudinally along a length of said bottom;

wherein the boundary surface comprises a first lateral radius of curvature corresponding to the first sidewall, a second lateral radius of curvature corresponding to the second sidewall, and a third lateral radius of curvature corresponding to the bottom;

wherein the third lateral radius of curvature differs from the first lateral radius of curvature and the second lateral radius of curvature;

wherein the boundary surface is an entirely-smooth surface having a defined slope at each point of the boundary surface;

wherein said boundary surface within a first portion of said first cup is different from said boundary surface within a second portion of said first cup; and

wherein said first portion and said second portion are different.

15. The end effector of claim 14 , wherein said staple further comprises a second leg, wherein said pocket further comprises a second cup configured to form said second leg, wherein said pocket is bilaterally symmetric with respect to a longitudinal axis extending through said first cup and said second cup, and wherein said pocket is bilaterally symmetric with respect to a transverse axis oriented perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and spaced equidistant from said first cup and said second cup.

The end effector of claim 14 , wherein said staple further comprises a second leg, wherein said pocket further comprises a second cup configured to form said second leg, wherein said second cup defines a second boundary surface comprising a second bottom, wherein said second bottom defines a second depth relative to said planar surface, and wherein said second depth varies longitudinally along a length of said second bottom.

17. The end effector of claim 14 , wherein said first cup further comprises:

a first lateral side extending along an entry zone, an exit zone, and a transition zone intermediate said entry zone and said exit zone, wherein said first sidewall extends from said first lateral side toward said bottom, and wherein a tangent to said first sidewall at said first lateral side is oriented at a constant angle in said entry zone, said exit zone, and said transition zone.

18. The end effector of claim 17 , wherein said constant angle is between 55 degrees and 80 degrees.

19. The end effector of claim 14 , wherein said pocket further comprises:

a first beveled edge extending along a first lateral side of said pocket; and

a second beveled edge extending along a second lateral side of said pocket.

20. An end effector, comprising:

a staple cartridge comprising a staple comprising a pair of legs; and

an anvil comprising a tissue compression surface, wherein a forming pocket is defined in said tissue compression surface, wherein said forming pocket comprises a forming cup configured to form one of said pair of legs of said staple, and wherein said forming cup comprises:

a longitudinal axis;

a staple leg entry zone;

a staple leg exit zone;

a first curved sidewall positioned on a first side of said longitudinal axis, wherein said first curved sidewall defines a first lateral radius of curvature;

a second curved sidewall positioned on a second side of said longitudinal axis opposite said first side, wherein said second curved sidewall defines a second lateral radius of curvature; and

a curved bottom portion intermediate said first curved sidewall and said second curved sidewall, wherein said curved bottom portion defines a third lateral radius of curvature that differs from said first lateral radius of curvature and said second lateral radius of curvature, wherein said curved bottom portion defines a depth relative to said tissue compression surface, wherein said depth varies longitudinally along a length of said curved bottom portion, wherein the first curved sidewall, the second curved sidewall, and the curved bottom portion define a first lateral profile within said staple leg entry zone, wherein the first lateral profile is a smooth curve having a defined slope at each point of the first lateral profile, wherein the first curved sidewall, the second curved sidewall, and the curved bottom portion define a second lateral profile within said staple leg exit zone, wherein the second lateral profile is a smooth curve having a defined slope at each point of the second lateral profile, and wherein the second lateral profile is different from the first lateral profile.
