Surgical instrument comprising an articulation system ratio
A surgical instrument is disclosed comprising a shaft, an end effector, and an articulation system which are configured to provide various mechanical advantages.
1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
a shaft, comprising:
a proximal end;
a distal end; and
a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end;
an end effector comprising an end effector frame rotatably coupled to said shaft about an articulation pivot, wherein said articulation pivot defines a fixed articulation axis, and wherein said fixed articulation axis is positioned laterally offset with respect to said longitudinal axis when said end effector is in an unarticulated position relative to said shaft; and
an articulation driver coupled to said end effector frame at an attachment location, wherein said attachment location is positioned proximal to said fixed articulation axis when said end effector is in said unarticulated position relative to said shaft, wherein said articulation driver is movable into a proximal position to rotate said end effector into a first fully-articulated position and a distal position to rotate said end effector into a second fully-articulated position, wherein said proximal position and said distal position define an articulation stroke of said articulation driver, wherein said articulation stroke has an articulation stroke length, wherein a lateral moment arm defined between said attachment location and said fixed articulation axis is defined by an arm length, and wherein said arm length is orthogonal to said longitudinal axis.

The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said end effector is swept through a first arc length when said end effector is moved from said unarticulated position to said first fully-articulated position, and wherein said end effector is swept through a second arc length when said end effector is moved from said unarticulated position to said second fully-articulated position.
3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said first arc length is equal to said second arc length.
4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said first arc length and said second arc length are different.
5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument is configured such that a ratio of said arm length to said articulation stroke length is between 1.1 and 1.4.
6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said attachment location is swept through an articulation arc length when said end effector is moved between said first fully-articulated position and said second fully-articulated position.
7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said surgical instrument is configured such that an articulation ratio comprising said articulation arc length to said articulation stroke length is defined.
8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said articulation ratio is between 1.2 and 1.7.
9. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said articulation ratio is about 1.1, but between 0.9 and 1.3.
10. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said surgical instrument is configured such that an articulation ratio comprising the product of said articulation arc length and said arm length to said articulation stroke length is defined.
11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said articulation ratio is between 1 mm and 3 mm.
12. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said articulation ratio is about 3.1 mm, but between 0.9 mm and 5.4 mm.
13. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.
14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.
15. A surgical instrument, comprising:
a shaft, comprising:
a proximal end;
a distal end; and
a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end;
an end effector comprising an end effector frame rotatably coupled to said shaft about an articulation pivot, wherein said articulation pivot defines a fixed articulation axis, and wherein said fixed articulation axis is positioned laterally offset with respect to said longitudinal axis when said end effector is in an unarticulated position relative to said shaft; and
an articulation driver coupled to said end effector frame at an attachment location, wherein said attachment location is positioned proximal to said fixed articulation axis when said end effector is in said unarticulated position relative to said shaft, wherein said articulation driver is movable into a proximal position to rotate said end effector into a first fully-articulated position and a distal position to rotate said end effector into a second fully-articulated position, wherein said proximal position and said distal position define an articulation stroke of said articulation driver, wherein said articulation stroke has an articulation stroke length, wherein a lateral moment arm defined between said attachment location and said fixed articulation axis defines an arm length, wherein said arm length is orthogonal to said longitudinal axis, and wherein said surgical instrument is configured such that a ratio of said arm length to said articulation stroke length is larger than 1.
16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein said ratio is between 1.1 and 1.4.
17. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein said attachment location is swept through an articulation arc length when said end effector is moved between said first fully-articulated position and said second fully-articulated position.
18. The surgical instrument of claim 17 , wherein said surgical instrument is configured such that an articulation ratio comprising said articulation arc length to said articulation stroke length is defined.
19. The surgical instrument of claim 18 , wherein said articulation ratio is between 1.2 and 1.7.
20. The surgical instrument of claim 18 , wherein said articulation ratio is about 1.1, but between 0.9 and 1.3.
21. The surgical instrument of claim 17 , wherein said surgical instrument is configured such that an articulation ratio comprising the product of said articulation arc length and said arm length to said articulation stroke length is defined.
22. The surgical instrument of claim 21 , wherein said articulation ratio is between 1 mm and 3 mm.
23. The surgical instrument of claim 21 , wherein said articulation ratio is about 3.1 mm, but between 0.9 mm and 5.4 mm.
24. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.
25. The surgical instrument of claim 24 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.
26. A surgical instrument, comprising:
a shaft, comprising:
a proximal end;
a distal end; and
a longitudinal axis extending between said proximal end and said distal end;
an end effector comprising an end effector frame rotatably coupled to said shaft about an articulation pivot, wherein said articulation pivot defines a fixed articulation axis, and wherein said fixed articulation axis is positioned laterally offset with respect to said longitudinal axis when said end effector is in an unarticulated position relative to said shaft; and
an articulation driver coupled to said end effector frame at an attachment location, wherein said attachment location is positioned proximal to said fixed articulation axis when said end effector is in said unarticulated position relative to said shaft, and wherein said articulation driver is movable into a proximal position to rotate said end effector into a first fully-articulated position and a distal position to rotate said end effector into a second fully-articulated position.
27. The surgical instrument of claim 26 , wherein a proximal retraction force is applied to said articulation driver to move said articulation driver into said proximal position, and wherein a distal pushing force is applied to said articulation driver to move said articulation driver into said distal position, and wherein said proximal retraction force is greater than said distal pushing force.
