Abstract

A surgical severing and stapling instrument, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

Claims (36)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

an actuatable portion operable to produce a firing motion; and

an implement portion responsive to the firing motion from the actuatable portion, wherein the implement portion is closable during a closing motion, the implement portion comprising:

an elongate channel coupled to the actuatable portion and including a channel slot;

a staple cartridge received by the elongate channel and incorporating a proximally-positioned wedge member aligned to cam upward a driver supporting a staple;

an anvil pivotally coupled to the elongate channel and including an anvil channel; and

a firing device, including:

a distally-presented cutting edge longitudinally received between the elongate channel and the anvil;

an upper member engageable to the anvil channel;

a lower member engaging the channel slot; and

a middle member operable to actuate the staple cartridge by distally translating the wedge member of the staple cartridge, wherein the firing device is retracted and disengaged from the anvil during the closing motion, the firing device positively engaging both the elongate channel and the anvil during longitudinal firing travel to provide spacing therebetween for staple formation.

2. A surgical instrument system, comprising:

an actuator housing assembly operable to generate at least two independent motions including an anvil closing motion and a staple firing motion; and

a stapling attachment responsive to the at least two independent motions generated by the actuator housing assembly, wherein the stapling attachment comprises:

an elongate channel;

an anvil pivotally coupled to the elongate channel, wherein the anvil comprises:

a longitudinal anvil slot;

a first longitudinal recess; and

a second longitudinal recess, wherein the first and second longitudinal recesses are transverse to the longitudinal anvil slot, and wherein the first and second longitudinal recesses comprise recess sidewalls; and

a firing member, comprising:

a distal cutting edge;

an anvil-engaging portion, comprising:

a first engagement member; and

a second engagement member, wherein the first and second engagement members comprise upper and lower surfaces that are configured to slidingly engage the sidewalls of the first and second longitudinal recesses in the anvil; and

a channel-engaging portion configured to engage the elongate channel, wherein the anvil-engaging portion is retracted and disengaged from the anvil during the anvil closing motion, and wherein the firing member is configured to maintain vertical spacing between the elongate channel and the anvil during the staple firing motion.

3. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

an actuator system operable to generate independent motions including an end effector closing motion and a staple firing motion; and

a stapling end effector responsive to the independent motions generated by the actuator system, wherein the stapling end effector comprises:

a staple cartridge jaw comprising a plurality of staples removably stored therein;

an anvil jaw, comprising:

a longitudinal anvil slot; and

a longitudinal recess extending from the longitudinal anvil slot; and

a firing member, comprising:

a distal cutting edge;

an anvil-engaging portion configured to slidingly engage a sidewall of the longitudinal recess; and

a cartridge jaw-engaging portion configured to engage the staple cartridge jaw, wherein the anvil-engaging portion is proximal to and disengaged from the anvil jaw during the end effector closing motion, and wherein the firing member is configured to control the relative spacing between the staple cartridge jaw and the anvil jaw during the staple firing motion.
