Abstract

A surgical instrument system comprising an end effector, a shaft, a closure drive, a closure member, and a motor-powered firing drive is disclosed. The end effector comprises an elongate channel, a staple cartridge, a clamping member, and a firing member. The staple cartridge comprises a plurality of staples and a plurality of staple drivers. The clamping member is pivotably connected to the elongate channel and movable between an open position and a clamped position during a clamping motion. The firing member is movable within the elongate channel to engage the staple drivers and deploy the staples from the staple cartridge. The closure member is operably connected to the closure drive and is configured to translate in a proximal direction to pivot the clamping member to the clamped position. The motor-powered firing drive is operably connected to the firing member. The closure drive and the firing drive are independently actuatable.

a firing member movable within said staple cartridge to engage said staple drivers and deploy said staples from said staple cartridge; and

an anvil pivotably connected to said elongate channel, wherein said anvil is movable between an open position and a closed position during a closure stroke;

a shaft comprising a longitudinal shaft axis;

a closure drive;

a closure system connected to said closure drive, wherein said closure system is configured to move proximally to move said anvil toward said closed position; and

a motor-powered firing drive operably connected to said firing member, wherein said closure drive and said firing drive are independently operable.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein said firing member comprises an I-beam and a wedge sled for driving said staple drivers.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said I-beam and said wedge sled are inter-connected.

7. A fastening assembly, comprising:

an end effector, comprising:

a channel;

a fastener cartridge, comprising:

a plurality of fasteners; and

a plurality of fastener drivers;

a clamping member pivotably connected to said channel, wherein said clamping member is movable between an open position and a clamped position; and

a firing member movable relative to said channel to engage said fastener drivers and deploy said fasteners from said fastener cartridge;

a shaft comprising a shaft axis;

a closure drive;

a closure system connected to said closure drive, wherein said closure system is configured to translate proximally within said shaft to pivot said clamping member to said clamped position; and

a motor-powered firing drive operably connected to said firing member, wherein said closure drive and said firing drive are independently actuatable.

8. The fastening assembly of claim 7 , wherein said firing member comprises an I-beam and a wedge sled for driving said fastener drivers.
