Abstract

A stapling instrument for use with a robotic surgical system is disclosed. The stapling instrument comprises a housing, a shaft, a loading unit, a firing drive, an articulation drive, and a rotation drive. The housing comprises a first, second, and third rotatable members. The loading unit comprises a staple cartridge and a firing drive. The firing drive is operably coupled to the first rotatable member and configured to convert rotary motion of the first rotatable member to linear motion to eject staples from the staple cartridge. The articulation drive is operably coupled to the second rotatable member and configured to convert rotary motion of the second rotatable member to linear motion to articulate a first jaw and a second jaw of the loading unit. The rotation drive is configured to rotate the shaft about a longitudinal axis and is operably coupled to the third rotatable member.

Claims (66)

1. A stapling instrument for use with a robotic surgical system, wherein said stapling instrument comprises:

a housing comprising an interface for attachment to the robotic surgical system, wherein said interface comprises:

a first rotatable member;

a second rotatable member; and

a third rotatable member;

a shaft extending from said housing, wherein said shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

a loading unit releasably attached to said shaft, wherein said loading unit comprises;

a first jaw;

a second jaw;

an articulation joint; and

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

an elongate slot extending from said proximal end toward said distal end, wherein said elongate slot is configured to receive a cutting member;

a first longitudinal row of staple cavities positioned on a first side of said elongate slot;

a second longitudinal row of staple cavities positioned on a second side of said elongate slot; and

staples removably positioned in said staple cavities;

a firing drive operably coupled to said first rotatable member, wherein said firing drive comprises:

a firing rod; and

a firing member, comprising:

a first cam member configured to engage said first jaw during a staple firing stroke; and

a second cam member configured to engage said second jaw during said staple firing stroke, wherein said firing drive is configured to convert rotary motion of said first rotatable member to linear motion of said firing rod, and wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge as a result of said linear motion of said firing rod;

an articulation drive comprising an articulation rod, wherein said articulation drive is operably coupled to said second rotatable member, wherein said articulation drive is configured to convert rotary motion of said second rotatable member to linear motion of said articulation rod, and wherein said first jaw and said second jaw are articulated relative to said shaft about said articulation joint as a result of said linear motion of said articulation rod; and

a rotation drive configured to rotate said shaft about said longitudinal axis, wherein said rotation drive is operably coupled to said third rotatable member.

2. A stapling instrument for use with a robotic surgical system, wherein said stapling instrument comprises:

a housing comprising an interface for attachment to the robotic surgical system, wherein said interface comprises rotatable members;

a shaft extending from said housing, wherein said shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

a loading unit replaceably attached to said shaft, wherein said loading unit comprises;

a first jaw;

a second jaw; and

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

an elongate slot extending from said proximal end toward said distal end, wherein said elongate slot is configured to receive a cutting element;

a first longitudinal row of staple cavities positioned on a first side of said elongate slot;

a second longitudinal row of staple cavities positioned on a second side of said elongate slot; and

staples removably positioned in said staple cavities;

a firing drive, comprising:

a firing rod; and

a firing member, comprising:

a first cam member configured to engage said first jaw during a staple firing stroke; and

a second cam member configured to engage said second jaw during said staple firing stroke, wherein said firing drive is configured to convert rotary motion of one of said rotatable members to linear movement of said firing rod, and wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge as a result of said linear movement of said firing rod;

an articulation joint;

an articulation drive comprising an articulation rod, wherein said articulation drive is configured to convert rotary motion of one of said rotatable members to linear movement of said articulation rod, and wherein said first jaw and said second jaw are articulated relative to said shaft about said articulation joint as a result of said linear movement of said articulation rod; and

a rotation drive configured to rotate said shaft about said longitudinal axis, wherein said firing drive, said articulation drive, and said rotation drive are each operably coupled to different said rotatable members.

3. A stapling instrument for use with a robotic surgical system, wherein said stapling instrument comprises:

a housing comprising an interface for attachment to the robotic surgical system, wherein said interface comprises:

a first rotatable member;

a second rotatable member; and

a third rotatable member;

a shaft extending from said housing, wherein said shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

an end effector releasably attached to said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises;

a first jaw; and

a second jaw;

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

an elongate slot extending from said proximal end toward said distal end, wherein said elongate slot is configured to receive a cutting member;

a first longitudinal row of staple cavities positioned on a first side of said elongate slot;

a second longitudinal row of staple cavities positioned on a second side of said elongate slot; and

staples removably positioned in said staple cavities;

a firing drive operably coupled to said first rotatable member, wherein said firing drive comprises a firing rod, wherein said firing drive is configured to convert a first rotary input from said first rotatable member to linear movement of said firing rod, wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge as a result of said linear movement of said firing rod;
