Abstract

An end effector for use with an adapter for a surgical instrument. The end effector includes first and second jaws that are pivotally coupled to each other and are movable between open and closed positions by a dynamic clamping assembly that is selectively movable between a starting position and an ending position relative to the first and second jaws. A first positive jaw opening feature is provided on the first jaw and a second positive jaw opening feature is provided on the second jaw. The first and second positive jaw opening features are configured for contact by the dynamic clamping assembly as the dynamic clamping assembly is moved in an opening direction to apply opening motions to the first and second jaws. The first and second positive jaw opening features may be longitudinally offset from each other.

Claims (45)

1. An end effector for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

a second jaw operably coupled to said first jaw to enable said first jaw and said second jaw to move between a fully open position and a closed position;

a dynamic clamping member selectively movable between a starting position adjacent to said proximal end of said first jaw and an ending position adjacent to said distal end of said first jaw;

a first raised jaw opening feature on said first jaw, wherein said first raised jaw opening feature is configured for contact by said dynamic clamping member as said dynamic clamping member is moved in an opening direction to apply a first jaw opening motion to said first jaw; and

a second raised jaw opening feature on said second jaw, wherein said second raised jaw opening feature is configured for contact by said dynamic clamping member as said dynamic clamping member is moved in said opening direction to apply a second jaw opening motion to said second jaw, and wherein when said dynamic clamping member is in said starting position, said dynamic clamping member operably interfaces with said second raised jaw opening feature to retain said second jaw in said fully open position.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first raised jaw opening feature and said second raised jaw opening feature are longitudinally offset from each other.

3. The end effector of claim 2 , wherein said first raised jaw opening feature is distal to said second raised jaw opening feature.

4. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first raised jaw opening feature comprises at least one first ramp surface and wherein said second raised jaw opening feature comprises at least one second ramp surface.

5. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said dynamic clamping member comprises:

at least one first jaw engagement feature configured to engage said first jaw; and

at least one second jaw engagement feature configured to engage said second jaw.

6. The end effector of claim 5 , wherein said first jaw comprises a surgical staple cartridge and wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil.

7. The end effector of claim 6 , wherein said first jaw comprises a channel supporting said surgical staple cartridge.

8. The end effector of claim 7 , wherein said channel is configured to removably support a replaceable surgical staple cartridge therein.

9. The end effector of claim 6 , wherein said end effector comprises a loading unit and wherein said surgical staple cartridge and said anvil are operably coupled to an elongated body configured to be removably coupled to a distal end of an elongate shaft of the surgical instrument.

10. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw further comprises a first jaw closure feature configured for contact by said dynamic clamping member as said dynamic clamping member is moved in a closing direction to apply a first jaw closure motion to said first jaw.

11. The end effector of claim 10 , wherein said first jaw closure feature comprises a first jaw closure ramp having a first slope.

12. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein said first jaw closure ramp comprises:

a first closure ramp segment including a first slope;

a horizontal plateau extending from said first closure ramp segment; and

a second closure ramp segment extending from said horizontal plateau and including a second slope.

13. The end effector of claim 12 , wherein said first and second slopes are equal.

14. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein said dynamic clamping member comprises a tissue cutting surface.

15. A loading unit for a surgical stapling instrument, wherein said loading unit comprises:

a cartridge assembly comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

an anvil assembly operably coupled to said cartridge assembly such that said cartridge assembly and said anvil assembly are movable between a fully open position and a closed position;

a dynamic clamping member selectively movable between a starting position adjacent to said proximal end of said cartridge assembly and an ending position adjacent to said distal end of said cartridge assembly, and wherein said dynamic clamping member comprises a tissue cutting surface;

at least one raised cartridge opening feature on said cartridge assembly, wherein said at least one raised cartridge opening feature is configured for contact by said dynamic clamping member as said dynamic clamping member is moved in an opening direction to apply an opening motion to said cartridge assembly; and

at least one raised anvil opening feature on said anvil assembly, wherein said at least one raised anvil opening feature is configured for contact by said dynamic clamping member as said dynamic clamping member is moved in said opening direction to apply an anvil opening motion to said anvil assembly, and wherein when said dynamic clamping member is in said starting position, said dynamic clamping member operably interfaces with said at least one raised anvil opening feature to retain said anvil assembly in said fully open position.

16. The loading unit of claim 15 , wherein said at least one raised cartridge opening feature is proximal to said at least one raised anvil opening feature.

17. The loading unit of claim 15 , wherein said cartridge assembly comprises a channel supporting a staple cartridge and wherein said at least one raised cartridge opening feature is on said channel.

18. An end effector configured for use with a surgical instrument, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

a second jaw operably coupled to said first jaw such that said first jaw and said second jaw are movable relative to each other between a fully open position and a closed position;

a dynamic clamping member selectively movable between a starting position adjacent to said proximal end of said first jaw and an ending position adjacent to said distal end of said first jaw;

a ramp assembly on said first jaw configured to operably interface with said dynamic clamping member to apply closing motions to said first jaw when said dynamic clamping member is moved in a closing direction from said starting position, and opening motions to said first jaw when said dynamic clamping member is moved in an opening direction, said ramp assembly comprising:

a first ramp segment;

a horizontal plateau extending from said first ramp segment; and

a second ramp segment extending from said horizontal plateau, and wherein said end effector further comprises:

a raised jaw opening feature on said second jaw, wherein said raised jaw opening feature is configured for contact by said dynamic clamping member as said dynamic clamping member is moved in said opening direction to apply a second jaw opening motion to said second jaw, and wherein when said dynamic clamping member is in said starting position, said dynamic clamping member operably interfaces with said raised jaw opening feature to retain said second jaw in said fully open position.

19. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein said first ramp segment includes a first slope and said second ramp segment includes a second slope that is equal to said first slope.

20. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein said first jaw comprises a surgical staple cartridge and wherein said second jaw comprises an anvil.

21. The end effector of claim 20 , wherein said first jaw comprises a channel supporting the surgical staple cartridge.

22. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein said dynamic clamping member comprises a tissue cutting surface.
