Abstract

A stapling system is disclosed. The stapling system comprises a housing comprising a first rotary input and a second rotary input, an elongate shaft, an end effector, a closure cam, and an opening member. The end effector comprises a jaw and an anvil comprising a cam surface. The anvil is rotatable relative to the jaw between an open position and a clamped position. The closure cam is operably coupled with the first rotary input and is configured to engage the cam surface to move the anvil toward the clamped position in response to an input motion from the first rotary input. The opening member is configured to apply an opening force to the anvil at a location other than the cam surface to move the anvil toward the open position in response to an input motion from the second rotary input.

Claims (57)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a housing comprising a first rotary input disc and a second rotary input disc configured to be driven by a rotary motion generator;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing, wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

an end effector, comprising:

a jaw configured to support a staple cartridge; and

an anvil rotatable relative to said jaw between an open position and a clamped position, wherein said anvil comprises a cam surface;

a closure cam operably coupled with said first rotary input disc, wherein said closure cam is configured to move longitudinally to engage said cam surface and transmit a clamping motion to said anvil to move said anvil toward said clamped position in response to an input motion from said first rotary input disc; and

an opening member configured to move longitudinally to apply an opening force to said anvil at a location other than said cam surface to move said anvil toward said open position in response to an input motion from said second rotary input disc.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said end effector comprises said staple cartridge.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 2 , wherein said staple cartridge is removably replaceable within said jaw.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , further comprising said rotary motion generator.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said housing further comprises a third rotary input disc configured to transmit a third operative motion to said end effector.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , comprising:

a firing actuator;

a firing member; and

a firing member progress indicator, wherein said firing member is movable distally within said end effector during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said firing member progress indicator is in the field of view of the clinician actuating said firing actuator.

7. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a housing comprising a first rotary member and a second rotary member configured to be driven by a rotary motion generator;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing, wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position, wherein said second jaw comprises a wedge surface;

a closure member operably coupled with said first rotary member, wherein said closure member is configured to move longitudinally to engage said wedge surface and transmit a closing motion to said second jaw to move said second jaw toward said closed position in response to an input motion from said first rotary member; and

an opening system configured to move longitudinally to apply an opening force to said second jaw at a location other than said wedge surface to move said second jaw toward said open position in response to an input motion from said second rotary member.

8. The surgical stapling system of claim 7 , further comprising a staple cartridge.

9. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said staple cartridge is removably replaceable within said first jaw.

10. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , further comprising said rotary motion generator.

11. The surgical stapling system of claim 7 , wherein said housing further comprises a third rotary member configured to transmit a third operative motion to said end effector.

12. The surgical stapling system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a firing actuator;

a firing member; and

a firing member progress indicator, wherein said firing member is movable distally within said effector during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said firing member progress indicator is in the field of view of the clinician actuating said firing actuator.

13. A surgical stapling system, comprising;

a housing comprising a first rotary input disc and a second rotary input disc configured to be driven by a rotary motion generating system;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing, wherein said elongate shaft comprises a longitudinally-extending tube;

an end effector, comprising:

a staple cartridge jaw comprising staples removably stored therein; and

an anvil rotatable relative to said staple cartridge jaw between a fully-open position and a fully-clamped position, wherein said anvil comprises a cam surface;

a clamping cam operably coupled with said first rotary input disc, wherein said clamping cam is configured to move longitudinally to engage said cam surface and transmit a clamping force to said anvil to move said anvil toward said fully-clamped position in response to an input motion from said first rotary input disc; and

an opening member configured to move longitudinally to apply a force to said anvil at a location other than said cam surface to move said anvil toward said fully-open position in response to an input motion from said second rotary input disc.

14. The surgical stapling systems of claim 13 , further comprising said rotary motion generating system.

15. The surgical stapling system of claim 13 , wherein said housing further comprises a third rotary drive member configured to transmit a third operative motion to said end effector.

16. The surgical stapling system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a firing actuator;

a firing member; and

a firing member progress indicator, wherein said firing member is movable distally within said end effector during a staple firing stroke, and wherein said firing member progres indicator is in the field of view of the clinician actuating said firing actuator.

17. A surgical stapling system, comprising:
