Abstract

Articulation joints for use in connection with a surgical instrument that has a portion that must be passed through a trocar or similar structure and then articulated relative to another portion of the instrument received within the trocar. Various embodiments of the articulation joint include at least one flexible driven member to articulate the surgical implement relative to the handle assembly of the instrument.

Claims (70)

1. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an end effector selectively movable between an open configuration and a clamped configuration in response to a clamping motion, said end effector comprising:

a frame; and

a staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a deck;

a longitudinal slot;

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

a cutting member movable from a starting position toward an ending position; and

a firing assembly configured to deploy said staples from said staple cavities in response to a firing motion;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

an elongate shaft, wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

an articulation joint wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said longitudinal axis about said articulation joint in response to an articulation motion;

a first electrically-powered drive system;

a second electrically-powered drive system; and

a handle, comprising:

a user input interface;

a battery; and

a control circuit powered by said battery, wherein said control circuit is configured to actuate said first electrically-powered drive system and said second electrically-powered drive system in response to user inputs from said user input interface, wherein said first electrically-powered drive system is configured to drive said firing motion and said clamping motion, and wherein said second electrically-powered drive system is configured to drive said articulation motion.

2. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first electrically-powered drive system and said second electrically-powered drive system are powered by said battery.

3. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein said clamping motion and said firing motion are separate and distinct.

4. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor configured to detect when said end effector is in said clamped configuration.

5. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein said staple cartridge assembly is replaceable.

6. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an end effector selectively movable between an open position and a closed position in response to a closing motion, said end effector comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw; and

a staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a deck;

a longitudinal slot;

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

staple drivers configured to deploy said staples from said staple cavities;

a cutting member movable from a starting position toward an ending position; and

a cutting and firing assembly configured to drive said staple drivers and move said cutting member from said starting position toward said ending position in response to a drive motion;

a shaft assembly defining a longitudinal axis;

an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said longitudinal axis about said articulation joint in response to an articulation motion;

a first actuation system;

a second actuation system; and

a handle, comprising:

a plurality of inputs;

a battery; and

a control system powered by said battery, wherein said control system is configured to interpret the conditions of said plurality of inputs, wherein said control system is configured to control said first actuation system and said second actuation system, wherein said first actuation system is configured to drive said driving motion, and wherein said second actuation system is configured to drive said articulation motion.

7. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 6 , wherein said first actuation system and said second actuation system are powered by said battery.

8. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 6 , wherein said closing motion and said drive motion are separate and distinct.

9. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 6 , further comprising a sensor configured to detect when said end effector is in said closed position.

10. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 6 , wherein said staple cartridge assembly is replaceable.

11. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

an end effector selectively movable between an open configuration and a clamped configuration in response to a clamping motion, said end effector comprising:

a frame; and

a staple cartridge, comprising:

a deck;

a longitudinal slot;

staple cavities defined in said deck;

staples removably stored in said staple cavities;

staple drivers configured to deploy said staples from said staple cavities;

a cutting member movable from a starting position to an ending position; and

a firing member configured to drive said staple drivers in response to a firing motion;

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

an elongate shaft, wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis;

an articulation joint, wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said longitudinal axis about said articulation joint in response to an articulation motion;

a powered system; and

a handle, comprising:

a plurality of controls;

a power source; and

a control circuit powered by said power source, wherein said control circuit is configured to actuate said powered system in response to user inputs from said plurality of controls, and wherein said powered system is configured to drive said clamping motion, said firing motion, and said articulation motion.

12. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 11 , wherein said powered system is powered by said power source.

13. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 11 , wherein said clamping motion and said firing motion are separate and distinct.

14. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 11 , further comprising a sensor configured to detect when said end effector is in said clamped configuration.

15. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 11 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable.
