Surgical instruments
Articulation joints for use in connection with a surgical instrument that has a portion that must be passed through a trocar or similar structure and then articulated relative to another portion of the instrument received within the trocar. Various embodiments of the articulation joint include at least one flexible driven member to articulate the surgical implement relative to the handle assembly of the instrument.
1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
a handle housing assembly;
a proximal tube segment attached to said handle housing assembly and protruding distally out of said handle housing assembly;
a distal tube segment;
an articulating joint assembly pivotally coupling said distal tube segment to said proximal tube segment, said articulating joint assembly comprising:
a ball member non-movably coupled to a distal end of one of said proximal tube segment and distal tube segment and rotatably received in a corresponding socket in an end of the other of said proximal tube segment and distal tube segment; and
at least one flexible cable attached to a motor, said flexible cable having a series of worm gear teeth thereon arranged to drivingly engage a corresponding passageway formed in said ball member or socket for retaining a portion of said ball member in said socket and, upon selective rotation, articulate said distal tube segment relative to said proximal tube segment; and
a surgical implement attached to said distal tube segment.
2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said surgical implement comprises an endocutter end effector.
3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said ball member has at least one hollow passage therethrough adapted to communicate with openings in said distal and proximal tube segments.
4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said motor is electrically powered.
5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said motor is powered by hydraulic fluid.
6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said motor is powered by air.
7. A surgical instrument, comprising:
a handle assembly;
a proximal tube segment attached to said handle assembly;
a distal tube segment;
an articulating joint assembly pivotally coupling said distal tube segment to said proximal tube segment, said articulating joint assembly comprising:
a disc-like member non-movably coupled to an end of one of said proximal tube segment and distal tube segment and rotatably received in a corresponding socket in an end of the other of said proximal tube segment and distal tube segment; and
at least one rotary driven flexible cable arranged to drivingly engage a corresponding portion of said disc-like member for retaining a portion of said disc-like member in said socket and selectively apply an actuation motion to one of said socket and said disc-like member to articulate said distal tube segment relative to said proximal tube segment; and
a surgical implement attached to said distal tube segment.
8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said surgical implement comprises an endocutter end effector.
9. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said disc-like member has at least one hollow passage therethrough adapted to communicate with openings in said distal and proximal tube segments.
10. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein said at least one rotary driven flexible cable comprises:
a first rotary driven cable arranged to drivingly engage a corresponding first portion of said disc-like member to apply an actuation motion thereto; and
a second rotary driven cable arranged to drivingly engage a corresponding second portion of said disc-like member to apply another actuation motion thereto.
11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said first rotary driven cable is rotated by a first motor attached thereto and said second rotary driven cable is rotated by a second motor attached thereto.
12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein said first and second motors are electrically powered.
13. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein said first and second motors are powered by hydraulic fluid.
14. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , wherein said first and second motors are powered by air.
15. A surgical instrument assembly, comprising:
a housing assembly;
a proximal tube segment attached to said housing assembly;
a distal tube segment;
an articulation joint assembly pivotally coupling said distal tube segment to said proximal tube segment, wherein said articulation joint assembly comprises:
a ball member non-movably coupled to a first end of one of said proximal tube segment and said distal tube segment, wherein said ball member is rotatably supported within a corresponding socket of a second end of the other of said proximal tube segment and said distal tube segment; and
a flexible cable attached to a motor, wherein said flexible cable is configured to drivingly engage a corresponding passageway formed in said ball member for retaining a portion of said ball member in said socket and, upon selective rotation, articulate said distal tube segment relative to said proximal tube segment; and
a surgical end effector attached to said distal tube segment.
16. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein said surgical end effector comprises a surgical stapling end effector.
17. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein said ball member comprises at least one hollow passage therethrough adapted to communicate with openings in said distal tube segment and said proximal tube segment.
18. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein said motor is electrically powered.
19. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein said motor is powered by hydraulic fluid.
20. The surgical instrument assembly of claim 15 , wherein said motor is powered by air.
