Abstract

Embodiments include a surgical instrument having an end effector, the end effector including a first jaw having a first end, a second end, and an anvil, the anvil having an anvil face, a second jaw having a first end, a second end, and a cartridge to house a plurality of staples, the cartridge having a cartridge face, a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw, and a second coupling that movably couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw, where the second coupling includes a rigid link, an elongate tube, where a distal end is coupled with the end effector, a handle, where a distal end of the handle is coupled with a proximal end of the elongate tube, and a drive assembly comprising a motor.

Claims (66)

1. An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the end effector comprising:

(a) a first jaw having a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and an anvil, the anvil comprising an anvil face positionable on the first side of the anatomical structure;

(b) a second jaw having a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and a cartridge housing a plurality of staples, the cartridge having a cartridge face positionable on the second side of the anatomical structure;

(c) a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw;

(d) a second coupling that couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw;

(e) a cord; and

(f) a buttress, the buttress comprising;

(i) a first buttress member, the first buttress member being positioned adjacent the anvil face such that the first buttress member covers a portion of the anvil face; and

(ii) a second buttress member, the second buttress member being positioned adjacent the cartridge face such that the second buttress member covers a portion of the cartridge face,

wherein at least one of the first buttress member or the second buttress member includes a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining a channel sized to receive the cord;

wherein at least one of the first jaw or the second jaw includes a plurality of cord supports, the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops distally along a first side and a second side of the end effector and attaches the first buttress member or the second buttress member to the plurality of cord supports, and the cord does not extend between the cartridge face and the anvil face when the end effector is in a closed position.

2. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the first jaw is a distal end of the first jaw and the second end of the first jaw is a proximal end of the first jaw.

3. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first buttress member comprises an adhesive for attachment to the anvil face and the second buttress member comprises an adhesive for attachment to the cartridge face.

4. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of staples is operably configured to puncture the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

5. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first buttress member and the second buttress member are formed from a bioabsorbable material.

6. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw comprises the plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along the length of the first jaw.

7. The end effector of claim 6 , wherein the first buttress member includes a first portion of the plurality of loops and the second buttress member includes a second portion of the plurality of loops.

The end effector of claim 7 , wherein the cord is threaded through the first portion of the plurality of loops of the first buttress member and the second portion of the plurality of loops of the second buttress member to retain the first buttress member adjacent the anvil face and the second buttress member adjacent the cartridge face.

9. The end effector of claim 8 , wherein the first buttress member and the second buttress member have a planar configuration.

10. The end effector of claim 1 , further comprising a blade that is transitioned from a first position at a distal end of the end effector to a second position at a proximal end of the end effector such that the first buttress member and the second buttress member are cut.

11. An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the end effector comprising:

(a) an anvil comprising a first end, a second end, and an anvil face;

(b) a cartridge comprising a first end, a second end, and a cartridge face, the cartridge housing a plurality of staples, wherein the first end of the anvil is coupled with the first end of the cartridge and the second end of the anvil is coupled to the second end of the cartridge;

(c) a cord; and

(d) a buttress, the buttress comprising;

(i) a first buttress member, the first buttress member being coupled with the anvil face such that the first buttress member covers a portion of the anvil face; and

(ii) a second buttress member, the second buttress member being coupled with the cartridge face such that the second buttress member covers a portion of the anvil face,

wherein at least one of the first buttress member or the second buttress member includes a plurality of plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining a channel sized to receive the cord;

wherein at least one of the anvil or the cartridge includes a plurality of cord supports, the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops distally along a first side and a second side of the end effector and attaches the first buttress member or the second buttress member to the plurality of cord supports, and the cord does not extend between the cartridge face and the anvil face when the end effector is in a closed position.

12. The end effector of claim 11 , further comprising a blade having a cutting surface configured to cut the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

13. The end effector of claim 12 , wherein the blade is transitioned from a first position at a distal end of the end effector to a second position at a proximal end of the end effector to cut the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

14. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein the first end of the anvil is a distal end of the anvil and the second end of the anvil is a proximal end of the anvil.

15. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein the first buttress member comprises an adhesive for attachment to the anvil face and the second buttress member comprises an adhesive for attachment to the cartridge face.

16. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of staples is operably configured to puncture the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

17. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein the first buttress member and the second buttress member are formed from a bioabsorbable material.

18. The end effector of claim 11 , wherein the anvil comprises the plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along a length of the anvil.

19. The end effector of claim 18 , wherein the first buttress member includes a first portion of the plurality of loops and the second buttress member includes a second portion of the plurality of loops.

20. The end effector of claim 19 , wherein the cord is threaded through the first portion of the plurality of loops of the first buttress member and the second portion of the plurality of loops of the second buttress member to retain the first buttress member adjacent the anvil face or the second buttress member adjacent the cartridge face.

21. An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the end effector comprising:

(a) an anvil that includes a first end, a second end, and an anvil face positionable on the first side of the anatomical structure;

(b) a cartridge housing a plurality of staples, the cartridge comprising a first end, a second end, and a cartridge face positionable on the second side of the anatomical structure, wherein the first end of the cartridge is coupled with the first end of the anvil and the second end of the cartridge is coupled with the second end of the anvil;

(c) a blade, the blade comprising a cutting surface, wherein the blade is engageable with the anvil and the cartridge;

(d) a cord; and

(e) a buttress, the buttress being a planar section of material coupled with the anvil face or the cartridge face and including a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining a channel sized to receive the cord;

wherein at least one of the anvil or the cartridge includes a plurality of cord supports, the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops distally along a first side and a second side of the end effector and attaches the buttress to the plurality of cord supports, and the cord does not extend between the cartridge face and the anvil face when the end effector is in a closed position.

22. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein the blade is transitioned from a first position at a distal end of the end effector to a second position at a proximal end of the end effector to cut the buttress.

23. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein the first end of the anvil is a distal end of the anvil and the second end of the anvil is a proximal end of the anvil.

24. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein the buttress comprises an adhesive for attachment to the anvil face or the cartridge face.

25. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein each of the plurality of staples is operably configured to puncture the buttress.

26. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein the buttress is formed from a bioabsorbable material.

27. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein the anvil comprises the plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along a length of the anvil.

28. The end effector of claim 21 , wherein the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops in the buttress to retain the buttress adjacent the anvil face or the cartridge face.

29. An end effector comprising:

(a) a first jaw having a first end, a second end, an anvil having an anvil face, and a first channel;

(b) a second jaw having a first end, a second end, a cartridge having a cartridge face, and a second channel;

(c) a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw;

(d) a second coupling that couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw;

(e) an I-shaped blade, the I-shaped blade comprising;

(i) a blade portion having a cutting edge;

(ii) at least one upper portion, wherein the at least one upper portion is slidably positioned in the first channel; and

(iii) at least one lower portion, wherein the at least one lower portion is slidably positioned in the second channel;

(f) a cord; and

(g) a buttress, the buttress being a planar section of material coupled with the anvil face or the cartridge face and including a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining a channel sized to receive the cord;

wherein at least one of the first jaw or the second jaw includes a plurality of cord supports, the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops distally along a first side and a second side of the end effector and attaches the buttress to the plurality of cord supports, and the cord does not extend between the cartridge face and the anvil face when the end effector is in a closed position.

30. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of loops has a central axis parallel with a longitudinal axis of the first buttress member or the second buttress member, when the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops, the plurality of loops and the plurality of cord supports are alternatingly positioned along the cord.

31. The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the cord does not extend over the cartridge face or the anvil face.
