Abstract

Embodiments include a method of stapling an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the method comprising the steps of providing an end effector, the end effector comprising a first jaw having an anvil, a second jaw having a cartridge housing a plurality of staples, providing a buttress, the buttress comprising a first buttress member and a second buttress member, attaching the first buttress member to the anvil, attaching the second buttress member to the cartridge, deploying the plurality of staples, and cutting the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

Claims (84)

1. A method of stapling an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an end effector, the end effector comprising;

(a) a first jaw having a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and an anvil, the anvil comprising an anvil face positionable on the first side of the anatomical structure, wherein the first jaw comprises a plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along a length of the first jaw;

(b) a second jaw having a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis, and a cartridge housing a plurality of staples, the cartridge having a cartridge face positionable on the second side of the anatomical structure;

(c) a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw; and

(d) a second coupling that couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw;

providing a buttress, the buttress comprising a first buttress member and a second buttress member;

attaching the first buttress member to the anvil face;

attaching the second buttress member to the cartridge face;

providing a cord, wherein the first buttress member or the second buttress member includes a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining an aperture sized to receive the cord, wherein each of the plurality of loops has a central axis parallel with a longitudinal axis of the first buttress member or the second buttress member;

threading the cord through the plurality of loops of the first buttress member or the second buttress member to retain the first buttress member adjacent the anvil face or the second buttress member adjacent the cartridge face, wherein threading the cord includes attaching the first buttress member or the second buttress member to the plurality of cord supports with the cord;

deploying the plurality of staples to puncture the first buttress member and the second buttress member;

coupling the first buttress member and the second buttress member to the anatomical structure with the plurality of staples; and

cutting the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first end of the first jaw is a distal end of the first jaw and the second end of the first jaw is a proximal end of the first jaw.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of staples is operably configured to puncture the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first buttress member and the second buttress member are formed from a bioabsorbable material.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the anatomical structure is a stomach.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a sleeve in accordance with a sleeve gastrectomy procedure.

7. The end effector of claim 1 , further comprising a blade that is transitioned from a first position at a distal end of the end effector to a second position at a proximal end of the end effector such that the first buttress member and the second buttress member are cut.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein deploying the plurality of staples comprises deploying the plurality of staples using a single cartridge to staple and form a sleeve in accordance with a sleeve gastrectomy procedure.

The method of claim 1 , wherein a first side of the first jaw comprises the plurality of cord supports, a second side of the first jaw opposing the first side comprises a second plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along the length of the first jaw, a first side of the first buttress member or the second buttress member comprises the plurality of loops, a second side of the first buttress member or the second buttress member opposing the first side comprises a second plurality of loops, each of the second plurality of loops defining a second aperture, the method further comprising:

providing a second cord; and

threading the second cord through the second plurality of loops of the first buttress member or the second buttress member to retain the first buttress member adjacent the anvil face or the second buttress member adjacent the cartridge face, wherein threading the second cord includes attaching the first buttress member or the second buttress member to the second plurality of cord supports with the second cord.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein, when the first buttress member and the second buttress member are cut, the cord and the second cord each remain uncut.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when the first buttress member and the second buttress member are cut, the cord remains uncut.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops, the cord extends along an entire length of the first buttress member or the second buttress member.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when the cord is threaded through the plurality of loops, the plurality of loops and the plurality of cord supports are alternatingly positioned along the cord.

14. A method of stapling an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an end effector, the end effector comprising;

(a) an anvil comprising a first end, a second end, and an anvil face, wherein the anvil comprises a plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along a length of the anvil; and

(b) a cartridge comprising a first end, a second end, and a cartridge face, the cartridge housing a plurality of staples, wherein the first end of the anvil is coupled with the first end of the cartridge and the second end of the anvil is coupled to the second end of the cartridge; and

providing a buttress, the buttress comprising a first buttress member and a second buttress member;

attaching the first buttress member to the anvil face;

attaching the second buttress member to the cartridge face;

providing a cord, wherein the first buttress member or the second buttress member includes a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining an aperture sized to receive the cord, wherein each of the plurality of loops has a central axis parallel with a longitudinal axis of the first buttress member or the second buttress member;

threading the cord through the plurality of loops of the first buttress member or the second buttress member to retain the first buttress member adjacent the anvil face or the second buttress member adjacent the cartridge face, wherein threading the cord includes attaching the first buttress member or the second buttress member to the plurality of cord supports with the cord;

positioning the end effector proximate the anatomical structure;

deploying the plurality of staples to puncture the first buttress member and the second buttress member;

coupling the first buttress member and the second buttress member to the anatomical structure with the plurality of staples; and

cutting the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising a blade having a cutting surface to cut the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising transitioning the blade from a first position at a distal end of the end effector to a second position at a proximal end of the end effector to cut the first buttress member and the second buttress member.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first end of the anvil is a distal end of the anvil and the second end of the anvil is a proximal end of the anvil.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the anatomical structure is a stomach.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the end effector is used to form a sleeve in accordance with a sleeve gastrectomy procedure.

20. The end effector of claim 14 , wherein the first buttress member and the second buttress member are formed from a bioabsorbable material.

21. A method of stapling an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an end effector, the end effector comprising;

(a) an anvil that includes a first end, a second end, and an anvil face positionable on the first side of the anatomical structure, wherein the anvil comprises a plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along a length of the anvil;

(b) a cartridge housing a plurality of staples, the cartridge comprising a first end, a second end, and a cartridge face positionable on the second side of the anatomical structure, wherein the first end of the cartridge is coupled with the first end of the anvil and the second end of the cartridge is coupled with the second end of the anvil; and

(c) a blade, the blade comprising a cutting surface, wherein the blade is engageable with the anvil and the cartridge;

providing a buttress, the buttress being a planar section of material;

attaching the buttress to the anvil face or the cartridge face;

providing a cord, wherein the buttress includes a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining an aperture sized to receive the cord, wherein each of the plurality of loops has a central axis parallel with a longitudinal axis of the buttress;

threading the cord through the plurality of loops of the buttress to retain the buttress adjacent the anvil face or the cartridge face, wherein threading the cord includes attaching the buttress to the plurality of cord supports with the cord;

positioning the end effector proximate the anatomical structure;

deploying the plurality of staples to puncture the buttress;

coupling the buttress to the anatomical structure with the plurality of staples; and

cutting the buttress.

22. The end effector of claim 21 , further comprising transitioning the blade from a first position at a distal end of the end effector to a second position at a proximal end of the end effector to cut the buttress.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the first end of the anvil is a distal end of the anvil and the second end of the anvil is a proximal end of the anvil.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the anatomical structure is a stomach.

25. The method of claim 21 , wherein the end effector is used to form a sleeve in accordance with a sleeve gastrectomy procedure.

26. The method of claim 21 , wherein the buttress is formed from a bioabsorbable material.

27. A method of stapling an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure, the anatomical structure having a first side and a second side, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an end effector, the end effector comprising;

(a) a first jaw having a first end, a second end, an anvil having an anvil face, and a first channel;

(b) a second jaw having a first end, a second end, a cartridge having a cartridge face, a plurality of staples, and a second channel, wherein the second jaw comprises a plurality of cord supports that are spaced apart along a length of the second jaw and that project outwardly from the cartridge;

(c) a first coupling that couples the first end of the first jaw to the first end of the second jaw;

(d) a second coupling that couples the second end of the first jaw to the second end of the second jaw; and

(e) an I-shaped blade, the I-shaped blade comprising;

(i) a blade portion having a cutting edge;

(ii) at least one upper lateral arm, wherein the at least one upper lateral arm is slidably positioned in the first channel; and

(iii) at least one lower lateral arm, wherein the at least one lower lateral arm is slidably positioned in the second channel;

providing a buttress, the buttress being a planar section of material;

attaching the buttress to the anvil face or the cartridge face;

providing a cord, wherein the buttress includes a plurality of loops, each of the plurality of loops defining an aperture sized to receive the cord, wherein each of the plurality of loops has a central axis parallel with a longitudinal axis of the buttress, the plurality of loops spaced apart along an outer edge of the buttress;

threading the cord through the plurality of loops of the buttress to retain the buttress adjacent the anvil face or the cartridge face, wherein threading the cord includes attaching the buttress to the plurality of cord supports with the cord;

positioning the end effector proximate the anatomical structure;

deploying the plurality of staples to puncture the buttress;

coupling the buttress to the anatomical structure with the plurality of staples; and

cutting the buttress.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein the anatomical structure is a stomach and the end effector is used to form a sleeve in accordance with a sleeve gastrectomy procedure.
