Abstract

A robotic stapling system comprising a surgical robot and a surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples, an instrument drive system, and a coupling member movable distally by the instrument drive system. The coupling member comprises a first cam configured to engage the first jaw and a second cam configured to engage the second jaw when the coupling member is moved distally. The coupling member is moved distally a first distance during a first actuation of the instrument drive system and a subsequent distance during a subsequent actuation of the instrument drive system. Staples are ejected from the staple cartridge during the subsequent actuation. The first actuation occurs at a first rate and the subsequent actuation occurs at a second rate which is faster than the first rate.

Claims (35)

1. A robotic stapling system, comprising:

a surgical robot comprising a motor drive system; and

a surgical instrument releasably attachable to said surgical robot, wherein said surgical instrument comprises:

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

an instrument drive system operably engaged with said motor drive system when said surgical instrument is attached to said surgical robot; and

a coupling member movable distally by said instrument drive system, wherein said coupling member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw when said coupling member is moved distally, wherein said coupling member is moved distally a first distance during a first actuation of said instrument drive system and a subsequent distance during a subsequent actuation of said instrument drive system, wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge during said subsequent actuation, and wherein said first actuation occurs at a first rate and said subsequent actuation occurs at a second rate which is faster than said first rate.

2. The robotic stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said coupling member moves said first jaw from an open position to a closed position during said first actuation.

3. The robotic stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said coupling member comprises a tissue cutting edge.

4. The robotic stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said second jaw comprises a channel, and wherein said staple cartridge is seated in said channel.

5. The robotic stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said surgical instrument comprises a housing that is releasably attached to said surgical robot and an elongate shaft extending between said housing and said end effector.

6. The robotic stapling system of claim 5 , wherein said motor drive system transmits a motion into said housing to drive said instrument drive system.

7. The robotic stapling system of claim 5 , wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis, wherein said instrument drive system comprises a driven element engageable with said motor drive system, and wherein said driven element is rotatable about an axis transverse to said longitudinal axis.

8. A stapling instrument for use with a surgical robot comprising a motor drive system, wherein said stapling instrument comprises:

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

an instrument drive system operably engaged with the motor drive system when said stapling instrument is attached to the surgical robot; and

a coupling member movable distally by said instrument drive system, wherein said coupling member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw when said coupling member is moved distally, wherein said coupling member is moved distally a first distance during a first actuation of the motor drive system and a subsequent distance during a subsequent actuation of the motor drive system, wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge during said subsequent actuation, and wherein said first actuation occurs at a first rate and said subsequent actuation occurs at a second rate which is faster than said first rate.

9. The stapling instrument of claim 8 , wherein said coupling member moves said first jaw from an open position to a closed position during said first actuation.

10. The stapling instrument of claim 8 , wherein said coupling member comprises a tissue cutting edge.

11. The stapling instrument of claim 8 , wherein said second jaw comprises a channel, and wherein said staple cartridge is seated in said channel.

12. The stapling instrument of claim 8 , further comprising a housing that is releasably attached to the surgical robot and an elongate shaft extending between said housing and said end effector.

13. The stapling instrument of claim 12 , wherein the motor drive system transmits a motion into said housing to drive said instrument drive system.

14. The stapling instrument of claim 12 , wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis, wherein said instrument drive system comprises a driven element engageable with the motor drive system, and wherein said driven element is rotatable about an axis transverse to said longitudinal axis.

15. A robotic stapling system, comprising:

a surgical robot comprising a motor drive system; and

a surgical instrument releasably attachable to said surgical robot, wherein said surgical instrument comprises:

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

an instrument drive system operably engaged with said motor drive system when said surgical instrument is attached to said surgical robot; and

a tissue cutting member movable distally by said instrument drive system, wherein said tissue cutting member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw when said tissue cutting member is moved distally, wherein said tissue cutting member is moved distally during a first actuation of said instrument drive system and a second actuation of said instrument drive system, wherein said staples are ejected from said staple cartridge during said second actuation, wherein said first actuation occurs at a first rate and said second actuation occurs at a second rate, and wherein said first rate is slower than said second rate.

16. The robotic stapling system of claim 15 , wherein said tissue cutting member moves said first jaw from an open position to a closed position during said first actuation.
